Yali Dream Creations CEO hopes ‘Rakshak’ will inspire more film adaptations of comics in India

Superheroes/heroines have always saved the world…and also the box-office! Quite literally! Be it Hollywood or Bollywood, there’s no dearth of superheroes as the audience simply can’t get over them or the concept of an extraordinary person taking on the wrong.

Recently, Yali Dream Creations’ Rakshak became the first superhero comic book series which will be adapted on silver screen. Helmed by noted filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, the film adaptation is produced by White Feather Films and co-produced by Yali Dream Creations CEO and publisher of the graphic novel Asvin Srivatsangam, along with Vivek Rangachari. It was Srivatsangam’s passion that led to the foundation of Yali Dream Creations and provided the wind beneath the wing for graphic novels like Rakshak to soar higher.

Srivatsangam had a dream of creating and sharing stories in some media or the other. He came from a family of academic high achievers. His paternal grandfather was a lawyer from Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, India. His father, Dr. Srivatsangam, was a scientist, who got his PhD from Fort Collins, Colorado, and worked for NASA. He has relations with the superstar and legendary actor, Dr. Kamal Haasan, who happens to be his father’s second cousin.

AnimationXpress was pleased to have a chat with this creative mind:

1. Tell us about yourself and your journey with Yali Dream Creations and its inception?

My early childhood was much enriched by cartoons, later by Indian mythological stories. While years of corporate life suspended this possibility, he kept weaving stories until one day he decided to start his own comic book company. I had always liked story-telling and exploiting visual medium such as graphic novels fascinated him even further.

I am based in San Jose, California and work as a UI/UX designer in the tech industry. However, I always wanted to do something with comics and storytelling. I began by creating two graphic novels, The Dynast and Neelakshi: The Quest for Amrit. The biggest pain point for me was to find a publisher. That is where it dawned on me to start a publishing house. It was Yali Dream Creations, which was started by me in August 2012. Our first graphic novel was The Caravan, which was the brainchild of writer, Shamik Dasgupta. This was released in June 2012 at Bangalore Comic-Con. Since then, we have published prequels for The Caravan, Devi Chaudhurani, Rakshak Origin series and then The Village. It has been a journey of over seven years now.

Asvin Srivatsangam

2. What is the significance of the name Yali Dream Creations?

The name ‘Yali’ was inspired from the Hindu mythology. Unknown story of Hindu Mythical animal – Yali (யாளி) Hindus mythical animal or monster Yali can be found in Hindu temples as an ancient art. It has been widely used in South Indian temples pillars. Part of Lion and Elephant as a body and head. These type of ancient mythical animals can be found in various parts of the world and religions.

Yali Dream Creations is a comic company focused on creating original stories to engage global audiences using comics and graphic novels. It brings original and imaginative stories with an admixture of horror and fantasy; mind-bending sci-fi and mythology. We nurture and enlighten the next generation to leap onto the comic book scenario through our gripping stories and eye-popping art-work. Our team, from the very creative artists to the exceptionally talented writers, have the same agenda: unfolding great stories.

3. How do you feel that Rakshak is now going to be adapted into a feature film?

Elated! That’s exactly how I feel! Of course, this is just the beginning. And director Gupta is the right person to helm a content like this. We, Yali Dream Creations are absolutely thrilled.

Having spent days, weeks, months creating a comic book series of 350 plus pages in four issues, and then talking to the stakeholders and collaborators for so many days, this is a truly fulfilling moment for me. Initially, my writer, Shamik Dasgupta, had titled this series Dansh. Though it was related to the story, the name did not sound very appealing. We brainstormed for several names after that. I came up with the name Rakshak, which is pan-Indian. After much debate, we felt it was the aptest and the most appealing name we could come up for this vigilante story. Thus it is Rakshak

4. As the publisher and co-producer of Rakshak, where do you think Indian graphic novels or superheroes stand to be made into films? How do you find that market?

While DC and Marvel comics and their screen adaptations are heavily consumed in India not only in English but also in Indian languages, it’s the right time for an indigenous comic book character to appear on film. Hopefully, Rakshak will pave a way for a new beginning for Indian comics. And create a new trend in Indian cinema!

5. Tell us more about ‘The Village’, that’s going to become a series on a global OTT platform?

One of our other graphic novel properties, The Village, has been optioned to a global streaming platform. So-and-so, a person who has worked with the legendary director Mani Ratnam, is going to direct the project. It is going to be made in Tamil, and the production will begin in August 2020.

6. What’s your vision? How are the finances looking?

Our vision is simple. We want to create good content in the form of comic books, and in that form, we have a visual screenplay ready for the consumption of filmmakers and studios. I think the bulk of our revenue would be generated from screen adaptation. Thanks to the OTT platforms of today, a story doesn’t have to be told only in the 150-minute format and to have a theatrical release. In other words, we have a wider market and reach than ever before.

As for the revenue coming directly from the comics, it has been modest. I think it would continue to be so for some time, as comic book readership is rather niche in India, and relatively new.

We are also looking to license our properties with gaming companies, since there is a huge market for mobile gaming. Also, we do not want to limit ourselves and stay a  mere comic book company. To empower ourselves, we have started a production house that would facilitate us in the conversion of our comics to screen adaptation.

7. What are the current and upcoming projects from Yali Dreams Creation?

We are working on sequels for The Caravan and Rakshak at the moment. We are also working on a major dark-fantasy Scions of the Cursed King. This was largely inspired by Game of Thrones and The Mahabharata. We are also working on a mythological fantasy called Gandiva

India’s Vimobin Labs is betting heavy on cloud gaming

As we enter a new decade, we are observing maturity in the Indian gaming industry. Especially when it comes to gaming hardware has already started shaping the gaming space. But how many of us can access these hardware? Cloud gaming technology which was until last year not so reachable for the gaming community is on the verge in changing the mindset.

Many of us are unaware of the fact that in today’s time everything under online world is based out of cloud. The biggest example will be the last decade – from booking cabs, to shopping online, to watch content online everything has been disrupted by cloud technology. Last decade was the time when entire community was dominated by cloud technology and gaming was no exception.

Last  year the big players like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, Paytm rushed to adapt the cloud technology for gaming sector.

With high speed data connection, the gaming space is evolving and it has opened doors for some startups to experiment with unique ideas for cloud gaming. Bangalore based startup Vimobin Labs  is one such technology company which has recently raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from FirstCheque with participation of angel investors such as Ranjit Radhakrishnan (CPO, Byjus), Farooq Adam (cofounder, Fynd), Shubh Malhotra (cofounder, Mobile Premier League (MPL)), Aprameya Radhakrishnan (CEO, Vokal, Ex CEO – TaxiForSure) and Aaryaman Vir from Prophetic Ventures to explore and evolve the cloud gaming scene in India.

Vimobin Labs co-founder and CEO Nikhil Prasad

In conversation AnimationXpress Vimobin Labs co-founder and CEO Nikhil Prasad shared   that gaming space in India has grown very fast and they are aiming to build the future of gaming which will revolutionise how games are consumed by the next billion gamers. He also added that they are aiming, “To offer gaming experience to the user who doesn’t have access to the right hardware. Today games are being made thinking of  the bigger gaming market like U.S South Korea, Japan and the average cost of the devices sold over in these countries are usually $400 to $500. Game developers are making games like PUBG and Fortnite and others keeping in mind to the hardware specifications of those gaming market. However the India story is different and the average cost of phone which are sold in India are $150 and it is drastically low, last year in Q3 the average phone sold was under Rs 12000 and therefore, the buying part is different. Then it’s become hard for Indian players to download and enjoy hardcore game uninterruptedly.”

Then he cited an example how during his computer gaming days owning a proper GPU was a dream. So to simplify the hardware hindrances Vimobin “is currently working on the technology where players can access heavy games like PUBG, Call of Duty, Age of Empires and others on cloud via one app, without worrying the phone space and the hardware specification  instead of downloading separate applications, which are too heavy for an average Android phone.”

Speaking of the market he highlighted the fact that the biggest hindrance right now in India with cloud gaming  is lack of awareness, players are finding hard to conceptualise the  idea, users impulse which will simplify and become easier  for audience to consume cloud gaming  with time. With the idea to make the ecosystem ready  for cloud gaming  Vimobin is currently expanding with new hires.

Ironcode Gaming’s upcoming casual game is for PC gamers

Ironcode Gaming is launching a new strategy game Tower of God for Steam on 18 January . In conversation with Animationxpress, Ironcode games CEO Pallav Nawani shares “Tower of God tells the story of a man who wants to change the choices he has made in his life. He decides to climb the unconquered Tower of God to have his one wish granted. It is a casual game for everyone who plays games for relaxation.”

The gameplay comprises of match-3 game with new gameplay mechanics which is based on strategy and also includes mini-games such as hidden object, jigsaw, memory and slider. “The player plays the Match-3 game to climb up the tower. In between there are mini games to freshen up the gameplay,” Nawani added.

The game will be available to play on PC, Mac, Linux and Android. It can be bought at Steam, itch and Ironcode’s official website as well. Nawani shares that the biggest concern for him while designing the game was to introduce something new in this casual game as casual gamers have played many match-3 games over the years side by side they also kept in mind that the players can still play the game and relax.

For that they have introduced new design elements, and have modified some old concepts to present it differently. The game also has difficulty levels which allowed the players “to play endless, untimed mode, while experienced players could play tougher levels in timed or move limited mode,” he added.

They have also taken care of the fact that while playing the game the player shouldn’t get bored before the game has to introduce something new. They have focused that the game in every level is fun to play, whether it is the first level or the last. He expressed, “For design we use good old pen and paper and spreadsheets, we document using Google docs and Google spreadsheets. That allows us to easily collaborate it online. For development; we use Unity as the game engine, and Affinity Studio and Blender for art.”

They started working on the game seven months back and the initial response has been good overall. He says “we are targeting people who play games to relax. While a lot of that audience has moved to mobile, that market is oversaturated. Fortunately, there are a sufficient number of people playing games on PC, so we are targeting those.”

He believes that the Indian games market is mobile first and the only profitable way is to have IPs and use them to make quick games that are cheap to make and monetize with ads. So game developers are finding strategy games are becoming successful and thus the developers are overflowing with strategy games. To inspire the budding developers he shares an insight for a successful game development he says, “It is crucial to analyse the industry before you start making the game, make sure there is an audience for your game before you commit to developing it.”
