Guest Column| Tech: Centroid’s MoCap report card 2019 – Parth Shah

2019 has been an exciting year for both Centroid UK and Centroid India. Centroid India started operating in January 2019 and was fortunate to work on five feature films, three games, one TV commercial and one TV series with India’s leading VFX, Game and Animation Studios. At present, Centroid India is one of the largest optical motion capture studios outside of the UK and USA, containing 32 cameras based in India’s Iconic Studio – Famous Studios, Mumbai.

Centroid also provides on-set motion capture solution, which can be achieved via optical or inertial shoots. On-set Motion Capture helps capture real actors, props and camera on location.

Along with standard performance capture service, Centroid also introduced several virtual production services such as real time compositing and combining real time CG characters on live action set, VR scouting, collaborative filmmaking, etc.

There has been a lot of innovations in motion capture industry and major advancements has been in facial animation. Both Gemini Man and The Irishman have taken de-aging to next level of quality.

Centroid’s focus in 2019 has been more towards development of Virtual Production. A few services and benefits are VR scouting (also known as Virtual Recce) where the entire crew can scout CG sets similar to a location recce and plan how to achieve the required shots. It can also be used to plan practical aspects of filming by deciding what camera, lens and lights to use. Following is an example of previsualizing complex stunt sequences which can be beneficial during production. This stage is also called stuntvis.

In Centroid, besides the hardware itself, there’s so much that goes on in post that makes centroid a great Performance Capture studio. Everything is timecode-synced, which is crucial in performance capture for many reasons – most specifically because of editing in our proprietary editing software called “Trimmer”.

Our post-production pipeline relies on accurately synced data – facial, audio, mocap, video – which is shared with client for editing selects – which gets sent to our Centroid Serbia, who tracks and cleans up selected data by client. We generate a lot of data per shoot, so we have custom scripts and software that are automating a lot of the post processes.

In films, performance capture is also useful to create realistic animation for creatures and crowd scenes. With extensive library of horse animation (which has been used in Game of Thrones fight sequences of Battle of Bastards and Spoils of War), Centroid provides great solution for crowd scenes. Another recent project where Centroid provided crowd animation is Bohemian Rhapsody, supplying data for the 80+ thousand crowd at Live Aid.

Realtime compositing and augmenting CG characters is another new service in Centroid’s palette.
Realtime compositing eliminates “staring chroma screen on set” and helps visualize CG set extensions in Realtime. This is useful in framing shots along with augmenting CG characters on set.
But the most important thing you absolutely need if you want to build the best performance-capture studio is a stellar team. There is no possible way anything like this can be put together without the most talented, passionate, and innovative team in the world. That said, I feel very fortunate to work with such amazing team across UK, Serbia and India.

Puma enters gaming, launches gaming shoes priced at $160

Brands all over want a piece of the hot cake that is esports. Recently Louis Vuitton partnered with Riot Games to bring out an exclusive selection of clothing based on the famed title League of Legends and Nike revealed its first official esports jerseys in September. Even Adidas signed a deal with famous streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins this year.

Now, it’s another sportswear brand Puma.  The company has recently launched a footwear which is targeted at gamers. Costing rather on the steeper side of the curve, the shoes are priced at $160.

The product story on the official site read, “Created with console gamers in mind, the gaming sock is the first edition Active Gaming Footwear. Designed for indoor and in-arena use, it delivers seamless comfort, support and grip so gamers can adapt to different active gaming modes and game their best.”

Many gamers were quick to have reactions with some even asking if the footwear could be used by PC players as well.

While the entry of this brand in the esports industry might not be shocking, the brand has not tied up with any existing gaming or esports company or personality. However according to a statement, Puma had “extensive talks with professional gamers” before they went ahead with the idea, so we might get to see some pros donning the newest item.

WinZO Games: A gaming platform to earn real cash for players and game developers

When it comes to earning real money by playing games or by publishing games online we always give a second thought. Thanks to the internet scams which have set our mindset like that. As the morning sun of digital age shining bright we are slowly changing our approach to earn real money online through gaming .

As we are stepping in the year 2020 we have realised that the Indian market size is huge and to serve it gaming content is a huge challenge. Taking it as the opportunity a lot of new players have emerged with a newer approach to engage the audience. We have discovered the WinZO Games android based gaming platform who has not only set its goal to serve the audience with ‘play and earn’ real money concepts but also has opened the opportunity for game developers with  ‘publish and earn’ real money concepts under one roof.

In conversation with Animationxpress WinZO Games co-founder Paavan Nanda has expressed how gaming space in India has evolved with respect to language, region, game genres, devices and keeping that in mind how they have created WinZO Games. For in-depth insight here is the excerpt:

Can you share a brief history of the WinZO Games platform? How many people are there right now?

WinZO started with a beta in the space of a vernacular based gaming platform in early 2018. We raised our seed capital from Kalaari and early this year we raised $5MM in Series A, led by Kalaari. It is my second venture, after Zostel and ZO Rooms, which was a budget hotel aggregator – a platform solving for un-utilised inventories of budget hotels and creating standardisation. ZO Rooms was a Tiger Global funded venture and the second-largest player in the space.

2017, was a very interesting year for the country. Jio created a great infra that gave access to smartphones and the internet to 300 million people from Tier 2- Tier 5 cities of truly vernacular Bharat for the first time. This was truly a mobile-first audience, spending 45 minutes playing games on their phones. However, this massive engagement was not monetised to its potential. Talking of the gaming space over decades, you have the highest engagements and downloads from India, yet India clocks the world’s lowest revenue. In 2018, 20 billion games were installed by 300MM people in India only, that’s 20 games on an average per user. Monetisation fails in India because the country is very low with in-app-purchases. Ad Revenues for this audience is exceptionally low. Then how would businesses make sense?

As a result, gaming studios in India became merely back offices to generate content for the west- those geographies could monetize these assets. We decided to build a platform, a “Netflix for Gaming”, a social arcade app powered by micro-transaction, in your language. Micro-transaction for bite-sized entertainment just made the model very viable and monetisation easy. We were very excited about the fact our players were making their first M&E transaction on the app. Today we have 12MM registered users, spending 55 minutes on the App per day on an average. 90 per cent of our users are from T2-T5 cities, playing from 10,000, cities, towns, and villages across India. Our App is in 10 languages, and 80 per cent of our audience is playing in Non-English.

My co-founder, Saumya, a masters in Psychology, was also leading growth for ZO Rooms and was earlier a part of The Times Group. Today we are a team of 40 super ambitious people. Our team has people from top product and tech companies globally. An interesting fact, we were just a 9-member team when we raised our series A.

What is the catch of earning real cash by playing casual games? Will you share the business model?

The only big gaming company so far has been Dream11 and we are truly inspired by how they approached the space. Dream11 has truly shown the Indian Startup ecosystem how to solve for unit economic positive business from day 1 and build great value. We took on that ethos to build a micro-transaction based gaming platform. The model was immediately adopted by the T2-T5 audience who were today making 175MM-180MM micro-transactions on the platform every month. This suddenly made the loss-making game assets into profit-making assets, thereby uplifting the entire ecosystem. On WinZO, the games immediately saw a 100X spike in their revenues.

You can call our platform, WinZO, ‘Netflix of Gaming’, in its true sense. We aggregate third party games on our platform that would eventually have a common layer of social and money is flowing through.

This vernacular platform is not only personalised for your language but also pushes the most relevant content to the end-user (recommendation engine), making content discovery very easy. This truly solves for the mobile-first, first-time smartphone users. The platform allows players to participate in tournaments for games such as Quizzes, Carrom, Cricket, Chess, and so on. The platform takes platform fees. With this model of micro-transaction, we could bring people in tier two/three/four/five to the digital grid, and they make their first-time media and entertainment transaction on our platform, this is a revolution in itself to win the trust of those who have never made digital payments. We have one million bank accounts linked to our platform.

The revenues on the game started becoming 100x of what it was originally before they plugged on in this model. We have 70+ Games and at this scale, we could say the product could reach masses and the model works. We had set up a fund of $1.5 million for game developers in India, basically to improve the supply side, to support the creation of great content for our end users. This announcement attracted small and big developers from across the globe to India. Developers from Africa, Southeast Asia, Korea, they were intrigued, tried and saw different revenues on their game in India. With our past experience with Zostel and ZO rooms, we pretty much know how to solve for revenue maximisation for an under-utilised asset, that’s what we did with ZO Rooms for the budget hotels.

Does the player have to give any token money to play games or register to the platform?

WinZO is entirely based on the concept of bite-sized entertainment backed by microtransactions, where users can put in as low as Rs.2 to play games. The Idea behind promoting microtransaction is to build a stable monetisation model in the mobile gaming industry. This would facilitate the creation of quality gaming content for the Indian audience.

Is the platform accessible only on mobile? What about other devices?

We have to build WinZO keeping the 300MM mobile-first audience. 99 per cent of our audience is on android and accesses the product through their smartphones.

Do you think cloud/online gaming platform is the next big thing for the gaming industry? Why?

The rapid digital consumption in India is imperative for the growth of the Gaming industry. As per the latest report by KPMG on media and entertainment landscape 2019, gaming is growing at a rate of 41.6 per cent.

This highlights how gaming has changed the contours of the entertainment industry and the onus lies majorly on the easier availability and affordability of smartphones and cheap data rates in India. Today on average a user spent around 55 minutes on mobile phone playing games. The three key segments of online gaming, which have seen engagement include – real money games (RMG), mobile-centric/casual games and e-sports.

Are there any in house games that are available on the platform?

We are not a gaming studio, we are a platform that works in partnership with studios and small game developers to take their content to the audience in Bharat. Our personalisation engine and our scalable monetisation model makes it super attractive to the game developers to push their content on our platform.

What has inspired you to initiate a gaming console, where developers from around the world can connect, publish and earn?

With the WinZO Developers’ Console, we aim to support the game developer community by providing an alternative monetisation method for their existing games directly and help them earn 100x from the moment the game gets approved on the platform. This comes only a few months after WinZO announced its fund of $1.5MM that was set up to support the gaming community globally. The game developers will be able to unlock a host of features provided by WinZO Games for higher retention, increased reach, premium user acquisition and branding.

Does the developer have to give any token money to publish games or register to the platform?

No. It’s actually the opposite! We want the game developers to earn revenue out of their games! WinZO is just a way to monetise your assets better. The platform is simple and effective in tracking metrics and data such as the revenue generated, game sessions, unique users, user feedback, and much more for the published games. Developers can register and create their profile and get a unique ID to submit their game for approval. To further ease the process, WinZO is also providing integration kit and documentation for developers. Once the game is uploaded developers will be able to monitor the revenue the game earns through a multipurpose dashboard.

What audience can expect from the platform?

We at WinZO are constantly evolving and building a one-stop entertainment solution keeping in mind the audience of ‘Bharat’. We are focusing on creating a seamless experience for our users and adding quality and engaging games for our gaming enthusiasts. We have games across all genres and the platform experience is personalised for each user.

What are the challenges you have faced in the Indian gaming industry?

We foresee more opportunities than challenges in the mobile gaming industry in India today. India is steadily moving towards value-driven consumption, with an increased focus on local development. Earlier the challenges were restricted to limited local content and game development and stable monetisation model; however, with WinZO we are solving the issues and providing an all in one entertainment app, localised for Indian users.

What is your goal for 2020?

By 2020 we aim to add 300+ games in 15+ languages on the platform, expand our user base from 12 million now to 100 million by 2020, connect with game developers from India and around the world to bring the best gaming content in India. We aim to solve for a great mind share in Bharat.

Activision :’Modern Warfare’ outspaces all previous ‘Call of Duty’ multiplayer experiences

Activision has revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has become the most played Call of Duty multiplayer in this console generation.

Modern Warfare has outpaced all previous Call of Duty multiplayer experiences of this generation in hours played, hours per player and average daily players on its way to becoming the most played Call of Duty multiplayer in the first 50 days since launch in six years.

“The momentum for Modern Warfare from day one has been incredible. Players are having a great time and are continuing to engage across the multiplayer experience at the highest level in years. We’re also seeing new franchise highs for this console generation in hours played, hours per player and average daily players. It’s great to see the fan response to the hard work from our development teams led by Infinity Ward. Players are having a great time, and there’s much more to come as we continue to deliver new content,” said Call of Duty, Activision executive vice president and general manager for Byron Beede.

Activision also claimed that through November 2019, Modern Warfare became the top-selling premium game of 2019 in the US. The game has made more than $1 billion and has went beyond 500 million multiplayer hours played since it first came out. Both the retail and digital copies of the game have been taken into account while calculating the revenue. The total tally of the number of multiplayer matches played stands close to about 300 million multiplayer matches. The sales figures are based on retail customer sell-through information and Activision data and estimates.

Upon release, the title featured a series of firsts for Call of Duty, including crossplay and cross-progression support, as well as the removal of Season Pass and delivery of new post-release content coming free to all players on all platforms.

Epic Games rolls out deals and discounts for Christmas

The Epic Games  Store is back with christmas deals with good discounts on recent high profile games, an outstanding free game and a coupon deal that keeps on giving starting from 19 December  to  1 January.

This includes award contenders which includes The Outer Worlds (25 per cent discount) and Control (33 per cent).

a $10 coupon that can be rolled into more $10 coupons when used on eligible games, and, as announced last week, the first of 12 free games that will be given out one per day until the end of the month.

The coupon is an interesting twist: It’s basically an automatic $10 deduction on your first purchase of $15 or more during the sale, but when you use it on an eligible game (the FAQ states that it can’t be applied to pre-purchases, non-game purchases like DLC or season passes, or in-game purchases such as V-Bucks) you’ll get another $10 coupon that you can use on another game—and if that one is also eligible, boom, another coupon comes your way. It’s basically an across-the-top $10 cut for everyone, but gamified, sort of.

Some other games with attractive Holiday Sale discounts include Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (17 per cent), Red Dead Redemption 2 (20 per cent) and Borderlands 3 (35 per cent). The deal on Fallen Order is surprising seeing that it only released a little more than a month ago.

The Holiday Sale also includes a free game every day for 12 days and the first one is a stone-cold winner. Into the Breach is a challenging strategy game that offers tactical depth in a small 8×8 space.

Netflix orders animated series from Pendleton Ward and Duncan Trussell

Netflix has ordered The Midnight Gospel, an animated series from Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward and comedian and host Duncan Trussell. The series will debut on the streaming service in 2020.

Co-created and executive produced by Ward and Trussell, The Midnight Gospel centers on Clancy, a spacecaster with a malfunctioning multiverse simulator who leaves the comfort of his home to interview beings living in dying worlds. The eight-episode series is set in a fantastical universe using interview clips from Trussell’s podcast, Duncan Trussell Family Hour.

Ward’s credits also include Bravest Warriors, which he created and voiced, several Adventure Time video games, plus voice work on The Simpsons and in video games ranging from Lego Dimensions to Broken Age. Ward is also working on the Adventure Time: Distant Lands mini-series for HBO Max, which debuts in May.

Netflix reveals 2D animated holiday movie ‘Klaus’ surpasses 30 million households

Netflix  revealed animated holiday movie “Klaus” has been watched in nearly 30 million households worldwide during its first month, according to data the company provided to Reuters.

Klaus is made in the traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. Taking into consideration the film’s title, Klaus involves the legendary figure of Santa Claus. This is supposed to be an origin story. It sheds a light upon why the presents go through the chimney, how reindeer came to pull the sleigh, how Santa got his red and white attire and how were the toys made.

Netflix only selectively releases viewership figures for programming it considers a hit, and the numbers are not verified by a third party. The company counts a view when an account streams at least 70 per cent of a movie.

The world’s largest streaming service, Netflix boasts more than 158 million subscribers around the world. But it is facing new competition, particularly from Disney, which has been removing its movies from Netflix and putting them on the Disney+ streaming service.

Review: ‘The Rise of the Skywalker’ packs a visual extravaganza

As “The Rise of Skywalker’ is the final chapter in the Skywalker line of stories in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, the movie packs too much into the screenplay, making it both crammed in terms of storyline yet a spectacle in terms of visuals.

While you’re given a smorgasbord of nostalgia, laughs, scares and intrigue, much of it constitutes what many might call a fan-service rather than creative development of the story arch. Picking up the thread from the events of ‘The Last Jedi’, the Star Wars saga opens with Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) as they go up against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order.

The story intends to give a cathartic full-circle closure to the conflicted characters on either sides of the spectrum; dark or bright. And that, to a degree, it successfully does. But in doing that, it loses the lustre of a smooth-flowing storytelling that filmmaking is all about.

The visual effects, nonetheless, dazzle and charm delivering the imagery so magnificent that this movie merits a watch despite shortcomings of its harried storyline! Your interplanetary space journey in the intergalactic space is a ride full of jerks, shakes, surprises and wonder! If only could the storytellers give us a pause to ponders and moments to reflect on what whizzed and whooshed by in a flash! However, in all the commentary inspired by the movie, one notion that reigns supreme, which is the triumph of technology. Visual effects technologies have truly opened frontiers of beauty and amazement and that was evidenced by this movie,
