Tencent wants to work with Nintendo to attract U.S. and Europe console game players

Tencent, as part of its partnership with Nintendo, is hoping to make console games with Nintendo characters in its bid to expand from China into the United States and Europe.

Chinese megacorp Tencent dominates the mobile market and had a stake in both Epic Games and Activision Blizzard, Tencent is looking to grow its audience outside of China, particularly in light of China’s recent decision to impose game curfews on people under 18 years of age. The company is also in a partnership with Nintendo, too.

Tencent and Nintendo were at ChinaJoy 2019, the largest gaming and digital entertainment expo in Asia, in August to unveil the strategy for releasing the Nintendo Switch into China. The partnership, first revealed in April, will see Tencent take charge in localizing Nintendo’s presence in China, which includes translating certain Nintendo Switch titles such as Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild into simplified Chinese, and setting up local servers for Nintendo Switch Online.

“What we want is to expand from China, and one target is console game players in the U.S. and Europe. We hope to create console games with Nintendo characters, and learn the essence of making console games from Nintendo engineers,” a Tencent official – who asked not to be identified – told the Wall Street Journal.

The long-term benefit of such a project will be the chance to learn from Nintendo on how to win over gamers in the U.S. and European markets, as Tencent failed to do so with Arena of Valor.

Netflix India reveals a whopping 700 per cent growth in FY 2018-19

Netflix India has unveiled a record growth of 700 per cent for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018-2019, owing to the increase in local content and marketing. (As per The Economic Times report)

There are 39 players in the Indian OTT space since 2012 when there were only nine. Despite being the biggest global video streaming platform, it wasn’t that popular in India when it arrived in India in January 2016, until few original content started grabbing eyeballs. Now, with the recent report, Netflix has surpassed almost all its contemporary streaming players including Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar.

Netflix

The streaming powerhouse has reported revenues of Rs. 466.7 crore for FY19 with a net profit of Rs. 5.1 crore, according to its filing with the registrar of companies sourced from Veratech Intelligence. In FY18, Netflix India had a turnover of Rs. 58 crore with Rs. 20 lakh net profit, which reflected financials for seven months starting September last year after the actual transfer to local distribution entity from Singapore.

Veratech founder Mohit Yadav commented, “A combination of factors including original content for India, partnership with Airtel for better access to market and fixing payment issues helped Netflix. All this combined with new low cost-based variants for a price-sensitive Indian market is the reason behind Netflix’s phenomenal growth.”

In the past two years, Netflix has doubled on offering local content, low-cost mobile plans and partnerships with telecom operators that adds into its 700 per cent growth in the country. Though the streaming giant doesn’t share subscriber numbers of individual markets, estimates are that its Indian subscriber base is between 1-1.2 million as of March 2019. The number has increased post July this year when the company launched a mobile only plan at Rs. 199 per month.

‘Green Eggs and Ham’ makes its debut on Netflix

Netflix released the new show, Green Eggs and Ham, starting 8 NovemberBased on the Dr. Seuss book, the 13-episode animated series, four years in the making, is a postmodern take on the classic buddy comedy.

Odd couple Sam and Guy embark on a road trip to return an endangered animal to its far-off home, and along the way, learn to try new things like hope, friendship, and a certain delectable dish.

Speaking to Variety,  Green Eggs and Ham creator Jared Stern revealed that the series took four years to produce. “There were four years of actual production. That was intentional, and that’s about normal for the quality of animation that we were aspiring to,” Stern said. “A typical animated film can take close to three to four years for generally an hour and a half of content. We have, I believe, around five and a half hours of content that we were trying to do at the level of a hand-drawn animated feature in that same amount of time.”

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation with hand-drawn 2D animation, and scored by composer David Newman conducting a 75-piece orchestra, Green Eggs and Ham boasts an all-star voice cast including Adam Devine, Michael Douglas, Ilana Glazer, Diane Keaton, Keegan-Michael Key, Eddie Izzard, Jeffrey Wright, Jillian Bell, John Turturro, Tracy Morgan and Daveed Diggs.
