WarnerMedia Entertainment Networks’ quirky rabbit emoji, Tuzki, continues to globetrot and win millions of hearts! After a successful launch at Paris Fashion Week 2018, the Manish Arora X TUZKI collection turned heads in China, Tuzki’s homeland. “WarnerMedia’s trendsetting emoji Tuzki is finally coming to India. The creative collaboration with Manish Arora sets the tone for Tuzki’s grand entry into the Indian shores after his international debut at Paris Fashion Week last year and most recently on the world’s tallest building. We are certain that India will love and embrace Tuzki’s unique style, which expands way beyond the realm of fashion. The new range follows the launch of Arora’s ‘One Day in Paris’ collection which was inspired by Tuzki enjoying Parisian life, flying on an airplane, meditating below the Eiffel Tower and chilling in his room with a glass of wine. Combining the designer’s quintessential embroidery and love for colours, the vibrant collection includes t-shirts, dresses, jackets, pants, sweatshirts and accessories like backpacks, pouches and clutch bags.

Arora said, “When the opportunity to create a Tuzki-inspired collection presented itself, I jumped at it right away as I am a huge fan. It was a real adventure, since the creative possibilities are just endless. Tuzki has universal appeal and I can’t wait for India to experience this collection on KOOVS.”

Comic book, ‘Bone’ will be coming to Netflix as an animated series

Netflix has secured the rights to Jeff Smith’s classic Bone, and intends to create an animated kids’ series.

Deadline noted that Warner Bros. had tried to adapt Bone as a movie starting in 2008, but never got anywhere. Netflix, however, has been more willing to take chances and more flexible in how and when it offers projects. It doesn’t have to fight for airtime or theaters, and it can pick whatever format best suits a story.

Bone is a comic series by Smith, released bit by bit from 1991 to 2004. The episodic toon will follow the beloved Bone cousins — Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone — on an adventure through a vast, uncharted desert and into a mysterious valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures.

Smith’s earlier comic include Shazam!, The Monster Society of Evil, RASL, Little Mouse Gets Ready! and Bone: Tall Tales. Currently he is working on his new project Tuki: 2 Million BCE.

Jellyfish Pictures have entered a distribution pact with Bomanbridge Media for the new pre-school property Ivy and the Inklings, which is the latest property of Jellyfish’s original content arm, Jellyfish Originals.

Bomanbridge has invested in the IP’s development in order to kickstart its international launch and will oversee distribution rights for Asia Pacific. Jellyfish will be responsible for all other international rights, pursuing commissioning broadcasters, pre-sales and potential co-production partners for the series. Both Jellyfish Pictures and Bomanbridge will spearhead the series roll out, with the aim of securing co-production investment and broadcast interest.

Zoe Kravitz set to play the new catwoman opposite Robert Pattinson

Zoe Kravitz has been tapped to play Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. Kravitz will star opposite Robert Pattinson (Twilight), who plays Bruce Wayne.

Kravitz comes to the project after her second season of the hugely successful HBO series, Big Little Lies. She also stars in the upcoming series High Fidelity.

This is not the star’s first foray into the superhero world either, having played Angel Salvadore in X-Men: First Class, and voicing Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Having starred in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the Divergent franchises, Kravitz is no stranger to either the fantasy or action elements of the film.

Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Joker), Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider) and Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver) were in the run for the role, apart from Kravitz.

Pre-production of The Batman is already underway, with filming to start January 2020. Written and directed by Reeves (Planet of the Apes) and produced by Dylan Clark, The Batman is slated to hit theaters on 25 June 2021.

The VFX spell that enhanced the storytelling of ‘Hiralal The Uncredited Role’

Arun Roy’s new Bengali-language biopic, which recently premiered at the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival plucks from obscurity Hiralal Sen’s contribution to Indian cinema. The fact that it was Hiralal Sen who was the pioneer of Indian cinema has largely remained beyond the ken of Indians. Set in 1886 present-day Bangladesh, the movie spans over filmmaker’s life; touching upon his drive for filmmaking. The director of the movie Arun Roy and the VFX creative director Indranil Roy spoke candidly with AnimationXpress about the project.

Filmmaker Arun Roy

What influenced or inspired you to make Hiralal : The Uncredited Role?

Since childhood, I’ve grown up like others knowing the Father of Indian Cinema is Dadasaheb Phalke. One day I discovered that the history of Indian cinema goes far back. Our country has been labouring under an incorrect notion. Not people are aware of the fact that it was Hiralal Sen. When I first came to know about this, I delved deeper into the subject. I did my research, wrote a script, and took it to the industry, I discovered that 98 per cent of them were oblivious to this. So, that inspired me to know more about it and let the world know about the truth.

What research material or where you got materials for your research?

My entire research on this concept spanned over two years. I got material and books from The National Library and Natyasodh library in Salt Lake, Kolkata that’s entirely dedicated to theater and on the history of theater. And finally, I penned the script.

A still from ‘Hiralal’

Why did you decide to take the aid of VFX for this film?

I took this decision because the story needed to be created in a setting of ‘old’ Kolkata. The roads, the feel of those days are gone now. Initially, I thought of creating a set but the expense was huge and for a Bengali film, it was practically impossible. The whole budget for my film was 95 lakhs. Creating a period film with that budget was a challenge in itself. So, I shared my concern with one of my friends, Soumen who works for Red Chillies as I have little knowledge about VFX. They were then too occupied with Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero. He then introduced me to Golden Ratio’s Indranil Roy, who seemed to be the perfect choice for the quality work I needed in a stringent budget. So, I went to Mumbai and discussed the project. I’m really grateful for the kind of work they’ve done even despite the budgetary constraints. It has aptly justified with the storyline, script and recreated 100-year-old Kolkata beautifully. The total film has been made using VFX and the credit goes to Indranil Roy.

Animation Xpress also spoke to Roy about how the ‘then’ reality was recreated on screen. Here’s wht he had to say :

Hirarlal The Uncredited Role is garnering praise for its visuals. Tell us about how the project came to you?

The director of the film approached a big VFX studio in Bombay for this project because he was looking for very high end invisible visual effects in terms of quality. At that time they were tied up with their ongoing projects so they could not take up Hiralal. They recommended my name with an assurance of quality. The director watched my visual effects reel and decided to carry out the project with me. I knew about Hiralal Sen though Bengalis, by and large, don’t know about him. It was a great opportunity to work on a Bangla feature film of Kolkata for the first time that too on the unacknowledged first filmmaker of India.

Golden Ratio owner and VFX creative director Indranil Roy

The movie is set in 1903 British India. Depicting that era presupposes a great deal of study and planning. Tell us about how you approached the project from the VFX standpoint.

Yes, it required a lot of studies on the buildings of the British ruled Kolkata. Since I was born and brought up in Kolkata, I know the places where those structures are still there. Some of them are in dilapidated condition and some are well maintained. I photographed most of them for reference and study. We covered a huge area with a green screen of 30 feet height in a mill campus on the bank of the river Ganga. We had a detailed discussion and shot division before and at the time of the recce. Here I must acknowledge that shooting with the director Mr. Arun Roy was a great experience. He did everything that needs to be done to achieve a good visual effects imagery. He gave me a freehand to shoot the VFX shots while he took care of the performance of the actors. The crew was big but extremely organized, fast and well-planned.

What sort of challenges did you have to face in deploying the imagery?

I guess the first criteria of working with the new-age Bengali directors of Kolkata is to understand their sensibilities. Their sensibilities are very different from those of Bollywood. Arunda clearly told me he didn’t want VFX to stand out. He wanted the visual effects imagery of Kolkata of that era to blend seamlessly with the story and the characters. Well, after the screening of the film at Kolkata Film Festival, nobody praised the visual effects! The audience did not come to know the city of that era was visual effects imagery. I saw a smile on Arunda’s face! I feel, sometimes the best compliment for our work is not receiving any compliment at all. That’s the biggest challenge!

Kinjal Nanda as Hiralal Sen

How long did it take for you to complete the post-production VFX process?

It took us one month to complete the visual effects.

Which software did you make use of?

We used After Effects, Nuke, Photoshop, and Silhouette.

How many shots were delivered?

Apart from creating the city of Kolkata in 1903, we had some shots of Varanasi Ghat of that time and some shots of the tent in Kolkata Maidan where Hiralal used to run his shows. Altogether we had more than 75 shots.

How many people from your studio worked on the project?

A total of ten artists worked on this project. Here I must mention the role of my friend Pragyanu Ranjan Sahu (Ranjan). He was closely associated with me in the supervision of the VFX post. His contribution is worth mentioning.

Riot Games celebrates ‘League of Legends’ 10th anniversary with new updates

Riot Games in the celebration of ten years anniversary of League of legends later this month has rolled out multiple major new initiatives in the works.

To celebrate League’s big anniversary, Riot finally revealed some of those other projects over a livestream.

League of Legends is expanding its wings to smartphones, tablets, and consoles. This version is named as League of Legends: Wild Rift by Riot. It features ranked mode and a new control system for gamepads and touchscreens. Wild Rift is launching in 2020. Open betas are beginning soon.

• Teamfight Tactics is Riot’s take on Autochess, and it is finally making the leap to mobile. It’s also getting a ton of new content and updates.

• Riot’s branching out from League of Legends than Project A, a tactical shooter, which is very much not a MOBA. Of course, like League, it is a character-based game. It sounds like a mix between Overwatch, Rainbow Six: Siege, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. But Riot says it is its take on a competitive shooter.

• Riot finally reveals a glimpse of 2016 deal where it has acquired developer Radiant Entertainment, who was working on the fighting game Rising Thunder. Project L certainly looks like a fighting game with League characters.

• Project F”: “A very early development project that explores the possibilities of traversing the world of Runeterra with your friends,” as Riot describes it. Brief streamed footage looked reminiscent of Diablo and other third-person action RPGs.
League of Legends Esports Manager: A team management game that lets players manage a team of simulated LoL. Planned to launch with League of Legends Pro League support next year.
• Teamfight Tactics Mobile: A smartphone port of Riot’s recent autobattler game mode, planned for the first quarter of 2020.
• Arcane: An animated series set in the League of Legends universe, planned for 2020.
League of Legends Origins: A “feature-length documentary” highlighting the game’s growth, available now on Netflix.

Riot is currently focusing all of its efforts on games in a single shared universe, building on ten years of experience and character design as it attempts to rapidly expand to other popular genres.
