‘Avengers: Endgame’ trailer breakdown: New pairings, some reunions and possible confirmation of a fan theory!

While we are still struggling to blow away the cobwebs spun by Captain Marvel and its hysterical intergalactic escapade, Marvel dropped the second official trailer of Avengers: Endgame to send us aficionados into absolute delirium.

In what is likely to be the final extended look of the movie, the new clip, clocking just over two minutes, barely skims the surface as expected. Almost one quarter of the trailer comprises of visions from the previous films of the MCU including of course Infinity War.

However, it does probe into certain new storylines with new team-ups, reunion of some old guards, before we finally see the surviving cohort strutting their stuff in new and supercool outfits.

Let’s break all that down further:

Black Widow goes to Japan to recruit Hawkeye (aka Ronin!)

Following the heartfelt flashback moments, we are brought to the present where Clint Barton has traded his archer wielding Hawkeye avatar for a more sassy Ronin, just like in the comics.

It is believed that his family too disintegrated following the snap, and the resulting remorse fostered his transformation into a deadly ninja assassin. And while we have to wait to see if that’s true, the new trailer shows that he’s in Japan and Black Widow has followed him there to recruit him back into the team.

At one point we see the Quintjet heading towards Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge which is possibly manned by Widow who has identified his whereabouts. She later confronts him in the middle of a street as the two then hold hands.

Further on in the clip we see Widow and Barton inside the ship, with the latter now consoling his fellow Avenger. Perhaps, the two are on their way back to the Avengers Compound, as later on we see him juxtaposed against one of its window.

Hawkeye running away from an explosion

Barton is still the Hawkeye here

Here, Barton is still Hawkeye. Even though he is seen sporting a new haircut, he still has the quiver tied to his back and is seen trying to barge out of an underground passageway while it explodes.

His location in that particular scene is still unbeknownst, but it certainly takes place before his timely transformation into Ronin.

Rocket Raccoon and War Machine team up for yet another exciting pairing!

Rocket and Rhodey joining forces!

Avengers: Infinity War was all about configuration of new and intriguing superhero coteries. Iron Man and Spider-Man paired up with Doctor Strange, before they are joined by some of the Guardians of the Galaxy whereas Thor spends most of his time with Groot and Rocket. Looks like the trend is set to continue in the Endgame.

We already know Stark and Nebula are working their way back to earth together after coming through as the only survivors from Titan, but the new trailer shows Rocket clinging on to a perch on War Machine’s armor, hinting at yet another new match-up.

Rocket is also seen tucked away in his classic comic costume, whereas Rhody has his armor upgraded. Together, they are either readying for a fight or possibly to pull off a task.

Either way, it’s going to be epic!

Nebula battling someone in a hinterland

Where is this, Nebula?

Besides Rocket, Nebula was the only other character from the Guardians group to come through Infinity War unscathed. And now, she will have a bigger role to play in Endgame.

The new trailer shows her brandishing swords before she makes a rallying cry and hurtles towards something – possibly Thanos. But the place is in the rack and ruins, reminiscent of Titan’s condition following the colossal battle with the purple giant.

However, if you notice carefully, looks like Rocket, War Machine and even Captain America, as depicted later on in the clip, are at the same place. Speculations are rife that our heroes are locking horns with the Mad Titan and could also possibly be the final act, but we still don’t know what this place is.

Black Widow’s constantly changing hair indicates time gap

Black Widow’s changing look has left the fans scratching their heads

Another particularly eye-catching aspect of this trailer is Black Widow’s changing hairstyle and colour. She sports a longer and burgundy-coloured hair during scenes where Cap’s talking to her; when she meets Barton; and even in the final act (more on this ahead).

However, in the last moment of the clip, she has a much shorter and a white dyed hair. That particular moment supposedly carries on from Captain Marvel’s mid-credit scene where we see Carol Danvers confronting the Avengers. If that’s the case, then all the other scenes which has her sporting a new look might be taking place after a considerable time-gap, which in turn means the actual mission to undo or reverse the snap, doesn’t happen in the immediate aftermath of it.

The heroes probably take sometime to lay their heads in water and come up possible solutions or simply, it might be just another misdirection from the Marvel thinktank.

Cap and Tony reunite!

Finally they meet again!

In the final moments of the clip, we see all the heroes assemble under one roof and perambulate towards something. But as the camera pans across them, we also notice Tony in the mix.

Firstly, that means he and Nebula (who is also seen in that moment) safely make their way back to earth. Secondly, Cap and Tony reunite before they set off on the mission. Finally.

Following the acrimonious feud between the two main Avengers in Civil War, fans expected the two to bump into each other at some point in Infinity War. In fact, Stark almost sought his help on Bruce Banner’s insistence. But some unforeseen circumstances led to Banner ringing Cap himself. That’s the closest we’ve seen those two reunite.

But in Endgame, we knew Cap and Stark had to join forces again, and the trailer has given us it’s first glimpse. That final sequence opens with the former all decked up in a new suit, before closing down with Stark in hindsight.

That means, by this point, those two have not only met, but also buried the hatchet. What remains to be seen is at what point would this happen, although it’s comprehensible that it won’t be long into the film.

New costumes hint at possible time travel

Quantum suits?

Perhaps the best and the most important bit of the trailer – Avengers in the new costume, likely to be the quantum realm costume. Cap, Black Widow, the Ant-Man, Nebula, Barton, Rhodey and Stark are all seen tucked away in the white-and-red outfit as the group possibly head towards the quantum tunnel to embark on the much speculated time travel.

Endgame is widely touted to involve this concept as leaked videos and images from the set have sparked speculations ever since. But a revelation of this costume – as teased by the merchandise products earlier in the year – all but further affirm the theory.

Also, Thor, Captain Marvel and Doctor Banner are all conspicuous by their absence in this scene: looks like the most powerful triumvirate of the group are headed separate ways, perhaps to keep Thanos engaged while the others undo the catastrophe he inflicted.

Thor is coming for Thanos all by himself?

This also makes more sense if you recall Thor hobbling through a wooden passageway with his axe in the Superbowl trailer, which is similar to the one Thanos arrived at after snapping. It’s a further indication that he, along with Captain Marvel and Banner, will stay put in present and hence won’t be travelling back in time.

Phew…. that’s too much to contemplate on from a simple trailer. But that’s exactly what Marvel wants us to do, before springing the inevitable surprise and catching us completely nonplussed.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame opens in cinemas on 26 April 2019.

Captain Marvel joins the gang in new ‘Avengers: Endgame’ trailer as quantum realm suits are revealed!

Even as we come to grips with Captain Marvel and her intergalactic escapade in her solo outing, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has decided to whip up the frenzy by a notch higher and dropped the much anticipated Avengers: Endgame trailer!

Exactly like in the first, it all begins with a despondent Tony reminiscing his journey as the Iron Man, followed up with the origins of other OGs like Captain America, Thor, Black Widow et al.

However, interspersed between these visions are that of the present, where we could see Cap ruminating at an inconspicuous support group whereas Black Widow confronts the now transformed Hawkeye, aka Ronin. We are also served a timely reminder of the grim ramifications of Thanos’ decimation: Falcon, Wanda, Black Panther, Winter Soldier etc perishing to dust after the snap.

But soon, the scenes cut to Avengers re-assembling and getting back in action- Ronin is fighting a lone battle in an ablaze canal; Thor wields his supercharged Stormbreaker; Rocket and Rhodey teaming up for a possible fight; Nebula crossing swords on a ramshackled land; Agent Romanoff refining her shooting skills; and finally, the Avengers sauntering through the air station in what’s possibly the quantum realm suits!

The camera pans across the entire group, with Tony and Nebula in the mix too, suggesting they make their way back to earth safely and join up with the rest of the gang. Also, Thor particularly shares a cute moment with Captain Marvel, summoning his axe right under her nose even though she stands unperturbed and unmoved by the show of might!

Soon, we will delve through the finer details of the clip in the upcoming breakdown story. So stay tuned!

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame releases on 26 April 2019.

20th FICCI Frames calls it a day promising to be grander next year

The third and final day of 20th FICCI Frames began with the session on sports, ‘Sportsononomics- Driving Indian sports forward, on and off field’. The panel discussed the current scenario of Indian sports which is at a turning point, about investments, policies, relations, analysing the business models to better the upcoming years.

Sports Live Entertainment chairman Atul Pandey commented, “Any kind of problem in this business arises because most of the people running the business are not from this background. Thus, there’s a gap.”

The rest of the panelist included AVIA chief policy officer John Medeiros, renowned media expert Chintamani Rao, GroupM business head of entertainment, sports & live events Vinit Karnik, Delhi Capitals CEO Dhiraj Malhotra, IQuest CEO Nitin Kukreja, 21st Century Fox director of Government relations Asia Matthew Kurlanzik and Indian sports journalist Mayanti Langer as the moderator.

The next session looked on the spurt of original content across TV, OTT and movie worlds. As competition is increasing, major VOD platforms around the world are creating original content to capture the mass and the market.

The session was moderated by Kaleidoscope entertainment managing director Bobby Bedi, and the panelists were MolQ Entertainment chief executive officer E.J. Klein, Wattpad Studios (Asia) head Dexter Ong, ALTBalaji Group and ALT Balaji Telefilms chief executive officer Nachiket Pantvaidya, VOOT business head Akash Banerji, MX player chief content officer Gautam Talwar, ErosNow chief operating officer Ali Hussein, chief operating officer,  Amazon Prime Video director and country manager Gaurav Gandhi and Shemaroo Entertainment chief operating officer Kranti Gada.

Gandhi mentioned, “The digital shift has happened in last four years and the shift on content was because we cater to a specific audience for different content we create. The genres being explored today were not really seen in other formats.”

Banerjee added, “Originals have a very tangible business value. It accelerates the business drive. The edginess and unexplored genres help us attract audience attention. We are not creating originals just for the sake of the trend but we believe in them.”

Moderated by Viraf Phiroz Patel, the following session was a ‘starry’ affair with Indian television actors Iqbal Khan, Nakuul Mehta, Vivek Dahiya, Kritika Kamra, Dhrashti Dhami and Namita Dubey. talking on the most widely consumed entertainment – TV.

They gave their inputs on the sweat and toil that goes behind earning the glitz and glory an Indian TV. The popular faces attempt a conversation to share the good, the bad, the ugly of being in front of the camera in the unpredictable world of TV fiction.

Mehta commented, “The challenge is to ride on the bandwagon and stick to what you believe in. We need to be patient for the right kind of roles. On basis of the tiresome work I do – I don’t get to see my wife, my family, attend birthday parties or any family functions. On basis of that, I’m highly underpaid.”

A panel discussion heated with the panellists including BARC India head partnerships Elbert Dsilva, Sony YAY! programming head Ronojoy Chakraborty, DDB Mudra Group executive director Sathyamurthy Namakkal, GroupM business head- entertainment, sports and live events Vinit Karnik, Viacom18 Media head content kids network Anu Sikka and Graphiti Multimedia co-founder Munjal Shroff discussed about complexity of programming for the age groups which has been challenging and how advertisers have no clarity on data to bank upon, while reaching out to the pre-school audience and their parents. The discussion further added insights upon the data consumption by these segments differ in taste, values and entertainment quotient. Kulkarni ensured the panel on the further investment in researching this segment is the need of the hour and the industry will take necessary steps for the same.

The BARC reports presented by Dsilva showed the topics of interest of kids on television which included games/talks shows/quiz, feature films and cartoon shows. According to the BARC reports, there are 17 channels in India focusing only on kids’ content, with 211 million kids watch television.

Sony YAY! head programming Ronojoy Chakraborty when asked by Kulkarni about the creation of stereotype shows on television mentioned, “If we have data, we will create program. If we get better age cuts, we can curate better content, but the revenue share must go up to make this happen.”

Disagreeing with Kulkarni’s comment on stereotyping shows, Sikka said, “We are not at all repeating content. We have definitely experimented with the shows on our channels, with creation of different channels for different target audience.”

Sikka finds that the 0-4, 5-9 and 10-12 age cut should be provided by BARC as there is a younger group of audience watching nursery rhymes. While, Chakraborty feels that the cuts should be: 2-6, 7-9, 10-14, considering the child’s developmental status.

The next session on ‘Screenwriters: The Creative Force Powering Indian Cinema’s new surge’, focusing on the unambiguous success of well-scripted films – Andhadhun, Stree, Badhaai Ho, despite the absence of big stars that underscores the power of good writing. The session celebrates the screenwriter, but more importantly explores what still needs to be done to facilitate great writing so that the industry continues to churn out more successful films.

The panel had some important names from the business – Juhi Chaturvedi (October), Sriram Raghavan (Andhadhun), Akshat Ghildial (Badhaai Ho), Raj Nidimoru (Stree), Junglee Pictures president Priti Shahani and Central Board of Film Certification member Vani Tripathi Tikoo. The moderator was screenwriter  Anjum Rajabali.

Tikoo exclaimed, “There are films made lately, those are relatable, using dialects that are real, uglier, violent in terms of portraying the reality and not only pretty things. They’re like a mirror to the society. And ofcourse the author’s back. These are exciting times for storytellers and storytelling. Also not to forget the book acquisitions.”

Nidimoru continued on the similar line, “The script is the star of the film but unfortunately is not treated as one. Anyone who’s a good or even decent writer can get a job now. But money is ofcourse an important factor. If you give the writers’ their due credit and money, they won’t take more projects together and focus on one to make it better.”

The following session on ‘Celebrating Rainbow: The Seven Shades of Content’ threw light on the trend of much deserved LGBTQ+ content in Bollywood films. The panelists consisted of reputed names from the film business – filmmaker Onir (My Brother Nikhil)  filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan (Kashish), filmmaker Hansal Mehta (Aligarh), writer Gazal Dhaliwal (Ek Ladki Ko Dekha to Aisa Laga) and veteran actor Shabana Azmi with Network18 Media group editor of  entertainment Priyanka Sinha Jha as the moderator.

Azmi recollected, “When Fire came to me, I was moved by the script but was concerned that it’d be used against me. I discussed it with Zoya who was just 19 then and she was not even concerned about the fact that it was a same sex relationship. We need to look at such films beyond the tag of it being just a same sex relationship.”

Dhaliwal revealed, “I lived a life of suffocation in Punjab. I’m a transgender female, I was born male. It was very important for me to tell the story of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha to Aisa Laga in a way that any middle class person would relate to as well as enjoy with their family at the same time as it’s a very sensitive issue. With Ek Ladki Ko Dekha to Aisa Laga it was Bollywood mainstream films coming out of the closet.”

Rangayan added, “LGBTQ+session in FICCI Frames in itself is mainstream. With decriminalising of 377, people’s minds have opened and now they are not hesitant to buy tickets and go out to watch films on this issue without laughing or passing any comment.”

The #10YearChallenge has smitten all and the advertising industry sure did manage to share their journey in the past few years with an interesting session. Advertising powers the media industry and there is explosion of subscription driven digital consumption. There is now higher media consumption, but also greater fragmentation.

Moderated by Madison World chairman Sam Balsara, the panel including IPG Mediabrnads CEO Shashi Sinha, Marico head media and digital marketing Ankit Desai, BARC India CEO Partho Dasgupta, Ultratechjoint executive president, head-marketing Ajay Dang, BBC World Service director-marketing and audiences Catherine Blizzard and Viacom18 head, Hindi mass entertainment and kids TV network Nina Elavia Jaipuria decoded the success mantras for a successful future in advertising.

Jaipuria mentioned, “The GEC sector has maintained its 53% sahre over the past few years as the time spent on GEC is higher. But, with the growing content platforms, consumer is spoilt for choices. As broadcasters, we have to be authentic and relatable with the content.”

The session was followed by the launch of India Today’s app ‘So Sorry Gully Cricket’, which was formally launched in the presence of former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar mentioned his memories related to the sport stating his love for Gully Cricket since childhood.

The following session was ‘Gazing into the Crystal Ball – Sustaining Growth in Uncertain Times- keynote by Government of India, Ministry of Finance principal economic advisor Sanjeev Sanyal. He talked on India as a fluid global marketplace, forecasting a global slowdown and disruption in media markets due to convergence.

The next sessions of the day were – ‘Producers Masterclass’ with Roy Kapur Films founder Siddharth Roy Kapur moderated by  journalist Mayank Shekhar which focused on the business of investing in films of different genres and creating a mark.

FICCI Frames 2019 ended with a candid chat between stand-up artist and actor Kapil Sharma actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra, moderated by Viraf Phiroz Patel about their journey, growth and expectations from the industry.

The 20th FICCI Frames was a successful event and we are anticipating it to be even bigger next year!

They can mine for stones to rebuild homes and craft, forge, weave and sew. The game is packed full of items to decorate and customize including sparkling fountains that ooze magic. Gujrat police arrested ten college students for playing ‘PUBG’

Ten college students are arrested in Rajkot, Gujrat after they were caught playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on mobile. The game was banned last week over concerns that it’s too addicting and violent.

According to the local media, the students were so engrossed that they didn’t realise that police were approaching the students to arrest them. The students were released on bail later.

Although PUBG is legal in rest of India, Gujarat dropped out the game after parents and educators complained that the game was too violent and distracted students from studying. In February, a local minister in Gujarat described it as ‘a demon in every house’.

Last month, PUBG’s parent company Bluehole released a statement to local Indian media to address the concerns, saying, “we also believe that it is extremely important for us to be a responsible member of the gaming ecosystem. To this end, we constantly work and shall continue to work with … parents, educators, and government bodies, and listen to their feedback on what we can do.”

Gujarat is the only Indian state to ban the game — which has been downloaded more than 100 million times around the world. The game has garnered several million users around the globe. However, the game’s popularity, bordering on addiction, in some cases has become a cause of concern for many parents across the country.
