What is Arnold and Arnold GPU?

Arnold is an unbiased, physically-based, Monte Carlo ray tracing renderer built for feature-length animation and VFX.

It was co-developed by Solid Angle and Sony Pictures Imageworks, where it was used on films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Gravity, The Avengers, and Pacific Rim. (You can see how Greyscalegorilla tools were used in the Pacific Rim main-on-end titles and in Tony Stark’s Avengers HUD.)

In 2016, Solid Angle was purchased by Autodesk and his since become the company’s standard render engine. Arnold is currently a CPU renderer available on Windows, Linux, and macOS machines. Autodesk just announced the public beta release of Arnold GPU in March 2019. The GPU version will only work with NVIDIA cards.

What 3D platforms does Arnold GPU support?

Same as the current CPU version of Arnold. It supports Autodesk programs Maya and 3ds Max, and is also available for Cinema 4D, Houdini, and Katana.

Are Arnold CPU and GPU different render engines?

Yes and No. Technically it’s the same engine, just different implementations. The ultimate goal is build a 1:1 render engine that can render either on CPU or GPU. As the GPU version is still in beta mode, many features have not yet been ported over.

Ideally once fully released, you will be able to seamlessly switch between CPU and GPU based on the type of machine you are working on, and what type of render farm you will be using.

Michael Lachance joins Miramax’s newly opened family and animation division

Michael Lachance has joined Miramax as executive vice president of the newly created family and animation division. Lachance will be overseeing the creative direction of the division at Miramax, while reporting to Bob Osher.

Lachance is a studio executive and writer with over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry. He is the former SVP of creative development at Sony Pictures Animation where he developed Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and the Smurfs franchise.

“We are very fortunate to have Mike join us and we look forward to his creative leadership to expand the Miramax content offering,” said Miramax CEO Bill Block.

Prior to Sony, Lachance was a senior development executive at DreamWorks Animation, where, as a leading member of the studio’s creative team, he conceived the original idea for Kung Fu Panda. He also spearheaded the development of animated features such as Madagascar, Shark Tale, Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third.

Monster Entertainment closes a raft of sales for science-based children’s shows

Monster Entertainment has signed a raft of deals for their science-based children’s series Earth to Luna! and LAB-Ra-Kazam.

Earth to Luna! has recently been sold CNC Media International for home video rights in South Korea, Radio Television Hong Kong for broadcast TV Rights in Hong Kong, Horng En Culture for DVD and VOD rights in Taiwan, Hopster for SVOD rights while Emirates and Azul Brazilian Airlines have picked up inflight rights.

The series has a total of 104 episodes over four seasons with a fifth season in production and a sixth one planned. Previous broadcast sales have included CJENM Korea, ČESKÁ Czech Republic, TG4 Ireland, Discovery MENA, Discovery Latin America, Netflix and Sprout.

LAB-Ra-Kazam has recently been acquired by PCCW Media for SVOD rights in Hong Kong and Macao and by beJunior for PayTV and VOD rights in MENA. LAB-Ra-Kazam premiered in the US on Generation Genius, a new subscription streaming platform made in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association that brings school science topics to life through fun, funny, entertaining and educational videos, and Earth to Luna! is an animated series all about Luna, a six-year-old girl who is completely, undeniably and passionately into just one thing: science!

Each episode finds Luna, her little brother, Jupiter and her pet ferret, Clyde in search of answers to their many questions. Earth to Luna! was created by TV PinGuim, an animation company based in Brazil, founded in 1989. The company initially began producing shorts for education channels, and since 2009 has been developing television series, such as Earth to Luna!

LAB-Ra-Kazam’s Dr. Jeff, also known as The Dancing Scientist, is known to millions for his popular YouTube videos and television appearances. Dr. Jeff is joined by assistants Zoe, Izzy and Bert the Robot to explore the amazing world of science through epic experiments and adventures. Each episode explores a real world problem to find a scientific solution, even featuring a hands-on Do-It-Yourself segment. 36 x 12′ episodes cover a wide variety of subjects targeting ages six to 11. After the Winter Guard leaves the prison where Dracula is held, the Shadow Colonel sets off blood bombs full of dead vampire blood within. The blood subsumes the inmates and turns them into a grotesque new bread of vampires:
