#FeatureFriday: The heroines of the Indian comic world

Today, as the world celebrates women and everything that they stand for, there is also the realisation that just one day will never be enough to honour everything that womanhood encompasses.  A woman has tonnes of roles to play:  a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a partner; but it is so important to understand that above all the roles, she is her own person first. Thus, saluting their spirit, here’s remembering some iconic Indian female comic characters.

Though comics has always been a male dominated entertainment section, this is not the scenario anymore. The number of female comic characters is only growing with coming days. Comic artist Abhijeet Kini says, “I always keep this line in mind when it comes to female characters, ‘Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’. An angry or upset woman is powerful enough to rattle everything around her.”

Created by cartoonist Pran, Shrimatiji who appeared in Diamond Comics in 1960 is based on a housewife named Sheila. She is a modern Indian woman who stands as a pillar for her family, putting behind the daily struggles every Indian lady has to face in the society

Diamond Group of Publications director Manish Verma said, “Diamond Group has a lot of female characters under its own banner who stand out. They have a relevant part in the story and have been favourite among our readers.”

Bini Chachi, wife of Chacha Chaudhary, was created in the year 1971. Dominating and expectantly high on intelligence, she is definitely the better half of Chacha ji who matches his witty nature. She is a kind hearted lady with all the attributes of a strict but caring and supportive wife.

Angry Maushi is a character who can take on a hundred men in a fist fight. She is the female protagonist of Abhijeet Kini Studio’s comic titled under her name

The famous Tinkle Comics characters Ina, Mina, Mynah and Mo are siblings, they each have their own quirks. The series initially focused on how much trouble the girls gave their miserly father but is now exploring the individuality of each of the siblings as well as the coming-of-age of their mother, Bina, who has become a chef in her own right.

WingStar is the alter ego of 13-year-old Mapui Kawlim. She is an ordinary girl who discovered she was an extraordinary crime fighter when she put on the gadgets made by her inventor father. Together with her mother Khyati Kawlim’s martial arts training and her own wits, she is unstoppable. She now revels in her strengths and even her weaknesses, using them to effect with a dollop of arrogance and a whole load of snarkiness

Nadia is 10 years old, hyper active, energetic and always up for an adventure. No secret is too big for her to uncover and no escapade too daring, especially when her curiosity is aroused. A gender role reversal here is that Nadia loves and enjoys playing sports while her friend, Aadi, prefers drama, since melodrama comes so naturally to him!

“We have worked on gender roles by assigning male characters with roles seen mainly as female—such as cooking, doing household chores, crying or even playing with dolls. Female characters on the other hand have been shown as cops, powerful villains and even mechanics,” comments Tinkle Comics editor-in-chief Rajani Thindiath.

Siblings Bir and Bala are the last of the YogYodhas, the warriors of the spirit who can evoke spirit creatures called Praanis from their birthmarks by taking yogic poses, and Bala is amongst them. Trained in Kalaripayattu, the ancient art form from Kerala, Bala along with her sibling Bir will fight to protect the world from all evil forces. The series also sees a reversal of traditional gender roles

Sam (Samhita Pillai) has the bad fortune of having one of the Defective Detectives—Ravi—as her older brother. She initially wanted to join Ravi and his friend Rahul on their cases. However, it didn’t take her long to figure out they were the ineptest of detectives. Usually it is Sam who actually manages to solve cases with her quick thinking and fearlessness

The famous Tinkle Comics characters Ina, Mina, Mynah and Mo are siblings, they each have their own quirks. The series initially focused on how much trouble the girls gave their miserly father but is now exploring the individuality of each of the siblings as well as the coming-of-age of their mother, Bina, who has become a chef in her own right

“Our idea is not to compare female characters to male characters or compete with them. The effort is to show all characters—female or male—as individuals with their own quirks without being shaped by pressures of hackneyed expectations of gender behaviour or expression,” expressed Thindiath.

Fenil Comics character Julie, a TV press reporter of Haqeekat news channel, was a college friend of Suryakant who is an alter ego of Faulaad. In Faulaad series she helps him to destroy the cobra empire

Chhabili is a village girl of Devipur village from series, Bajarangi. She is from Jindaari tribe, which was once ancient fighters against British rule in India. Chhabili helps the protagonist to make the village a better place

Fenil Comics founder Fenil Sherdiwala feels, “Females are always unique from male characters. Sometimes they are much better than male characters. In Fenil Comics universe too female characters are playing an important role.”

Uttara from TBS Planet Comics After the comic Uttara came out, the comics got lot of fan response to bring her in an individual series. Uttara, thus will be reprising her role in a solo comic tentatively titled The Water Princess sometimes towards early next year, expressed Rajiv Tamhankar

TBS Planet Comics founder Rajeev Tamhankar said, “Women are the start of everything. Without a mother, nothing can start. Our organization too is indebted for some incredible women without whom none of our stuff could have come to life. The favourite characters from TBS Comics are written and illustrated by female writers and artists, our website is managed on logistics front by a lady. These amazing women are the real reasons why TBS Planet Comics is able to bring out high quality content and we are always indebted to them.”

Raat from TBS Planet Comics

“Diamond Group have always applauded the facets of feminism through the work. We take pride in featuring female role models who are opiniative, brave, determined and decisive. We aim to break more stereotypes through our creativity and story telling to build a strong presence for female protagonists not only in the society but in our creative world as well,” concluded Verma.

Happy Women’s Day ladies! Keep celebrating everyday!

Disney+ will have “the entire Disney motion picture library” : Bob Iger

Set to launch later sometime this year, Disney+ will contain “the entire Disney motion picture library”, according Disney CEO Bob Iger. This announcement brings the iconic ‘Disney Vault’ to an end. (as Polygon reports)

‘Disney Vault’, the term used by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for its policy of putting home video releases of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ animated features on moratorium. Disney’s rich catalogue of films dates back to 1920s, including cult classics like Snow White, Mary Poppins, Dumbo and even the modern game changers like Brave, Frozen, Coco and many more.

Till date, Disney has only made individual titles available on home video for limited periods of time Disney DVD, Blu-ray and was discontinued until it’s released again. With Disney+ going online, almost all the content from Disney will be streaming there, available anytime. However, Iger mentioned that the marketing trick will simply fade away.

He said, “The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television, with a lot of original product as well, movies and television. And at some point fairly soon after launch it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a “vault” and brought out basically every few years will be on the service. And then, of course, we’re producing a number of original movies and original television shows as well that will be Disney-branded.”

Some of the shows confirmed to be available on Disney+ consists of a live-action Star Wars series- The Mandalorian, which will be directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2).

Iger also stressed that newer films will find a home on Disney+ within a year of their theatrical release. “It’s going to combine both the old and the new. All of the films that we’re releasing this year, [starting] with Captain Marvel, will also be on the service,” he added.

No release date for Disney+ has been announced yet.

Breaking down ‘Captain Marvel’ mid-credit scene

Warning: Contains spoilers for ‘Captain Marvel’

For MCU aficionados, Captain Marvel isn’t only an intriguing origin story to look forward to, but also a gateway to a few more clues ahead of the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame, the ultimate culmination of a decade long saga.

As Thanos decimated half of the universe’s lives, our surviving heroes are pondering over ways to reverse the catastrophe and bring the world back to its normalcy. However, their quest is aided by the newest entrant into MCU’s superhero gallery Captain Marvel.

The photon-blasting intergalactic crusader is introduced as a Kree, a race of “noble warrior heroes” who have been waging a war against the supposedly terrorist, shape-shifting group of extra-terrestrial creatures called Skrull.

But Carol Danvers – her original identity – is not only thrust at the deep end of this conflict, but also unravels certain secrets that had been kept clandestine ever since she was recruited by the Kree. However, some interesting turn of events pull the lid off some untold stories and Danvers finally ends the warfare almost single-handedly.

So having given the jist of the plot, let’s get down to the brasstrack: the mid-credit scene which has been bandied about with time on social media for a few days now.

Nick Fury, before he perished, sent a distress signal to Captain Marvel through a dated pager at the end of Infinity War. In the present day, the pager is in the custody of the surviving Avengers at the Avengers mansion. However, a few seconds into the scene, and it stops flickering.

The scene then cuts to a still-bearded Captain America and Black Widow pensively gazing at a holographic image that extrapolates the exact count of people who vanished in the aftermath of “The Decimation” that was the snap. Rhody then shows up from behind and proclaims “So that thing just stopped doing whatever the hell it was doing.”

As Black Widow then stresses on the fact that it is essential to figure out “who’s at the other end of the signal” and turns to leave, Captain Marvel, who sneakily awaits behind them, confronts her and inquisitively asks: “Where’s Fury?”

Despite running for less than a minute, this mid-credit scene does drop quiet a few clues about Endgame.

Firstly, it means Captain Marvel will already be with the Avengers at the start of the movie and won’t just show up heroically in the middle of a confrontation nor bump into them at a point. She’s not going to have a dramatic Thor-like entry either. She’s already in the Avengers mansion and our heroes are going to brief her about all the events of Infinity War and the havoc wreaked in the universe. That means her integration with her counterparts would be quick.

Also, this might be one the foremost scenes of Endgame – particularly appearing inside the first five to ten minutes of the film, if not the outright opening sequence. For it’s only plausible to expect Marvel to probe into certain mysteries viz what is Thanos doing there in the paddy fields? Which planet is he on? Is that the earth? How do our heroes go back to their mansion from Wakanda? et al.

And don’t forget, Cap is still sporting his badass beard here, so that further accentuates the theory.

Secondly, the mid-credit scene all but squished another theory that Captain Marvel would come to Tony Stark and Nebula’s rescue, who’ve although left Titan but stranded in a spaceship in the outer space and oxygen fast running out. Of course, she can just whizz through the galaxy by the drop of a hat and locate them, but the Superbowl trailer which showed our heroes staring at what’s likely a landing vehicle, is that of Stark and Nebula, who find their way back to earth.

As for the end-credit scene where Goose the Flerken barfs up the Tesseract on Fury’s desk, it only serves to deepen the serpentine history of the stone in the MCU. We first saw it in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger where the Red Skull had it in his possession, then it went to Loki in Avengers, he then pillaged it at the end of Thor: Ragnarok, before Thanos finally confiscated it in Infinity War.

So now the question arises: how does it end up in Loki’s possession from here? Heck, how did the stone even end up in this movie from Red Skull?! But contrastingly, this may not necessarily be the same Space Stone that Thanos used in the snap. This might just be another piece of the artifact, possibly?

The scene opens with the camera panned at Fury’s empty desk for a good four to five seconds before Goose pops up from under the table. Maybe this is to inadvertently tell us that he has been indeed dusted here and it is set in the present day. So if that is the case, then Avengers will use the Tesseract to travel through various dimensions.

But again, this is only a speculation and it is still unclear at which point exactly is the scene set in.

Nevertheless, the mid-credit scene has set up Avengers: Endgame already and now we can eagerly look forward to the second official trailer that’s likely to drop before the end of this month.

Ah, the jitters…. can’t wait!

Based on Marvel Comics, Captain Marvel is now running in theatres while Avengers: Endgame releases on 27 April 2019.

3 Quick Tips for Better and Faster Redshift Renders in Cinema 4D

In this Redshift tutorial, learn how to get rid of noise, animate with depth of field, and more.

With these three easy tips, you’ll learn a few things Nick picked up while going through the Greyscalegorilla Guide to Redshift. Learn how to properly set up your render settings for even faster and better results.

Let’s dive in, and you can also read all the tips down below.

Tip 1: Bring Clone Colors in Redshift

First let’s talk about color. This scene uses Fields in Cinema 4D, but the colors used don’t appear in Redshift. You’ll need to apply a Redshift Material to your cloner.

Quick Tips for Better and Faster Redshift Renders in Cinema 4D - Tip 1

Double click the material and in the Material Editor click on Edit Shader Graph. Search for and add a Color User Data node. Set the Attribute Name to MoGraph > Color. Now connect the Color User Data node to the RS Material and select Diffuse > Diffuse Color.

Tip 2: Apply Depth of Field

Here are the simple steps to setup Depth of Field in Redshift.

Quick Tips for Better and Faster Redshift Renders in Cinema 4D - Tip 2

Add a Redshift Camera Tag to your existing camera. With the Redshift tag selected, navigate to the Bokeh tab and check the box marked Enabled. Adjust the CoC Radius slider to achieve the look you want. Fun fact: CoC stands for Circle of confusion!

In this particular render, I also used GorillaCam and the Everyday Material Collection.

Tip 3: Faster Renders With Less Noise

In this tip, we’re gonna setup our scene for a grain-free render by adjusting the proper render settings.

Quick Tips for Better and Faster Redshift Renders in Cinema 4D - Tip 3

To render faster, it’s going to come down to adjusting the proper Samples. You don’t want to just adjust the overall Unified Sampling in the Render Settings, because that will actually slow things down. You first want to start by adjust the Sample of your Redshift lights.

Adding more light data to your scene will start to clean up your render. You want to increase your samples at a rate of 2x, and don’t be afraid to crank these numbers up really high.

You can also turn up the number of rays in your Brute force global illumination. If you still have a ton of noise, now you can jump back into the render settings and adjust the overall samples.

One of Trevor Kerr’s best quotes from the Greyscalegorilla Guide to Redshift is, “put your samples where they matter.” It really does hold true.

Review: Captain Marvel is much more than what we expected her to be

Finally! She is here and she’s here to rule!

One of the most awaited films of 2019, Captain Marvel, that releases tomorrow on Women’s Day, has all the ingredients to witness a record opening being the first female-led film in the MCU.

Written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is based on Carol Danvers by Roy Thomas Gene Colan and also takes few elements from Thomas’s 1971 Kree–Skrull War comic book storyline.

The film is set in 1995 and revolves around Carol Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after the Earth is caught in between a galactic conflict between two alien worlds.

Produced by Marvel Studios, Captain Marvel is an exciting, unexpectedly enigmatic science fiction tale, that is so smartly executed, that it has managed to keep most of its secrets. What we see in trailers is not even one per cent of what we get to experience on big screens with Danvers taking on the bad guys.

Captain Marvel begins on the Kree Empire’s capital planet of Hala, where Vers, (Brie Larson) warrior and Starforce member struggles with recurring nightmares involving an older woman. Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), her mentor, warns her to control her powers and focus on the present instead of brooding over the past. While on an operation to rescue a Kree agent, she is abducted and forced to undergo a memory probe by the Skrulls – Kree’s enemies. Escaping their ship, she crash lands on Earth and comes across Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) who helps her find her true identity and prevent the skrulls from wreaking havoc.

The film moves forward as Vers discover herself as Carol Danvers, US Air Force pilot who is thought to have died six years earlier while testing an experimental light-speed engine designed by scientist Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening), whom she recognises as the woman from her momentary flashes. She was kidnapped by Rogg to Hala, after she tried to destroy the code Lawson created. Along with Fury, she meets her friend cum co-pilot Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and confronts Skrull commander Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who reveal themselves as mere refugees threatened by the Krees. Thus begins her fight for good over evil.

Larson, who was announced as Danvers at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, has gone deep into the skin of the character and made it her own. She is so effortless in her screen presence and acting timing, that we are made to feel there can be no Captain Marvel better than her. Jackson is terrific as usual in his comic timing, swag, attitude and unique charm. He is de-aged using CG techniques to almost 30 years, along with Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and both of them look amazing. And yes, we get to know how Fury lost his eye!

The film hits you with nostalgia in some moments – slow downloading on internet explorer, tape recorders, and other typical 90s charm. The humour- both situational and verbal, is perfectly blended into the layers of the film. The script is comprehensive, dialogues well placed and well executed.

When it comes to Marvel movies, we cannot miss talking about the VFX and CG works used in the film. With some amazingly crafted cosmic fight scenes, galactic explosions, Danvers’ memory probing scene by the Skrulls, change of Captain Marvel’s costume, Goose’s transformation into a weird alien looking animal and other several instances, the VFX and CG works are indeed commendable and deserves appreciation.

The production VFX supervisor is Christopher Townsend and the rest of the teams includeIndustrial Light & Magic (VFX supervisor: Craig Hammack), Trixter (VFX supervisor: Dominik Zimmerle), Framestore (VFX supervisor: Christian Kaestner), Animal Logic (VFX supervisor: Paul Butterworth), Lola Visual Effects (VFX supervisor: Trent Claus), Scanline VFX (VFX supervisor: Nick Crew), Rising Sun Pictures (VFX supervisor: Malte Sarnes), Luma Pictures (VFX supervisor: Brendan Seals), Digital Domain (VFX Supervisor: Dave Hodgins)RISE (VFX Supervisor: Oliver Schulz) and Cantina Creative.

Captain Marvel is also about women empowerment and empowerment of the self in general. One of my favourite scenes from the film is where, Danvers knowing that she is weak, imperfect and human, embraces it completely, unleashing her inner strength and setting herself free. Danvers, Lawson, Rambeau and even Monica are strong and full of conviction in their own ways.

War is another motif that is touched upon in the film, and as Fury says “ War is an universal language”, we are made to ponder about the conflict of war-peace, and its aftermath.

Captain Marvel is an unmatched addition to the MCU; and as Fury mentions:

“We have no idea of what threats are out there,

We can’t do this alone

We need you.”

We’d definitely need her in the days to come!

Watch out for her making the impossible, possible tomorrow!

(P.S : DO NOT MISS THE MID AND POST CREDITS SCENE)
