Animated series ‘Giri Guru’ is a playful reminder to steal a moment and enjoy the smaller things in life

In the world that’s taken over by relentless competition, where people are running behind success to reach the sky, we often forget to live the small moments, losing out on most of the simple pleasures of life. Many a times, I wonder how much time do we devote to ourselves or our passion that drive us; that let us do something beyond our comfort zone. And this is what animated series Giri Guru is all about.

Originating from a small group of professionals (based out of Hong Kong) from the film and VFX industry, who took that leap of faith and quit their jobs to follow their passion, Giri Guru is a playful reminder to take a short break from an increasingly busy life to have a moment of fun, being curious and enjoy the smaller things in life.

The team that has created this adorable and funny series with a hidden message in it, consists of Morten Jaeger (director), Jessica Siu (producer), Henning Sanden (technical director), Emilie Stabell (artist) and  Lisa Siu (PR and community manager). Before Giri Guru, the members of this team worked in different sectors, such as advertising, games and VFX. Their  portfolios include a wide array of top-notch projects such as Pacific Rim, Alien, Guardians of the Galaxy, Harry Potter, A Monster Calls, Sherlock Gnomes, Rabbids Invasions, and many more.

Jessica Siu

Speaking to AnimationXpress, Jessica revealed the inspiration behind this series, “Creating and telling stories is something that everyone in our team is passionate about. We all have a strong desire to work with like-minded people, so I suggested that we take it a step further, it was only natural that we formed a company together to turn our dreams into a reality. Having studied degrees in art, animation and storytelling, we were confident that we could create something truly special together and that special something is Giri Guru.”

Releasing every Wednesday on YouTube, Instagram, Weibo and bilibili, up until the beginning of May this year, Giri Guru consists of 16 short format episodes lasting from 30 to 60 seconds. The title of this cute series is sure to attract kids and adults alike as the words are influenced by a phrase from Hong Kong that equates to the rumbling of one’s stomach.

Jessica mentioned, “As Giri Guru is based out of Hong Kong, we wanted to create a name that would be both relatable to everyone and represent Hong Kong at the same time. The phrase represents the sound of rumble when you’re hungry – a gentle reminder to eat, fill our stomachs and be happy. Our goal has always been to remind people to have fun and find happiness. Our lives only become busier as we grow older, and so we hope to remind people to enjoy the little things in life. Giri Guru is therefore a simple reminder to be happy.”

Though targeted at kids and young adults, the message Giri Guru spreads, is universal. The series makes audience believe in the magic of creation, to be curious, never lose hope even if things don’t go as planned, and to surround themselves with good friends while they do so. The animated comedy presently has 16 episodes lined up, with one OVA episode. However, the makers are planning on producing many more to extend the universe of Giri Guru.

Jessica added, “We have many stories to tell and we are extremely excited to share them with the world.  We’re currently releasing the episodes across social media platforms. Eventually, we hope to get in contact with TV networks so that Giri Guru can be seen on cartoon channels around the world. It would be a big dream come true for our team to see our hard work make it into people’s living rooms.”

What captures attention of the series is its clever, smart treatment and execution. With stunningly simple yet captivating animation, Giri Guru makes a mark and triggers you to think about the lesson it intends to preach.  The short episodes seemed that the series is quite influenced by scientific inventions which are sure to grab attention and take one by surprise.

“We’re all lovers of science-fiction, so thinking up scientific inventions for the episodes is a definite joy for us. Also, we hope that they’ll also inspire our audience to be curious and exercise their own inventiveness and creativity… The visuals and animation in Giri Guru are things we are most proud of. With the white background and colourful characters, we’ve done our best to create a simple yet bold look that’s meant to really make the animation shine. It’s all about how the characters behave and act when facing challenging and new situations, so we’ve removed anything that could distract from their story,” commented Jessica.

Currently, this animation team is working hard on several projects including creating episodes for Giri Guru season two and promoting the series to new audiences. “We also support our team members in their own individual projects. One project we are very proud to support is Flipped Normals, a public platform, created by Morten and Henning, which provides tutorials, tools and assets for individuals in the VFX, game and animation industries,” concluded Jessica.

With interesting line up, we can hope to witness some amazing content from these talented minds. Cheers to Giri Guru! Cheers to self-love!

Disney dethrones Apple to be the most intimate US brand

Valentine’s Day turned out to be quite special for Disney, as the company was named the “most intimate” brand based on a survey of consumers in the U.S.

Conducted by MBLM, a global agency that works with brands, The House of Mouse left behind Apple to claim the top spot in an annual survey billed as “the largest study of brands based on emotions”. According to the study of brand intimacy, Disney tops the list  with (DIS) +0.42 per cent taking away the crown from Apple (AAPL) with +0.36 per cent, which ranked first in the last three iterations of the study.

The survey enquired 6,200 consumers about how they feel about various brands, which MBLM used to create a list ranking 400 top brands. MBLM managing partner Mario Natarelli said, “Our demand for escapism and our collective need for a distraction from reality is factoring heavily in the brands that rose in 2019.”

While iPhone leaks and getting hold of latest gadgets released by Apple still interests consumers, the survey found that people felt more of an emotional connection with Disney, whether it’s through visiting Disneyland, or watching classics like The Lion King.

According to MBLM’s analysis, Apple had to lose its top position due to “its well-publicised missteps and consumer gadget fatigue.” The company had a rough year due to stagnant iPhone sales and difficulty breaking into the Chinese market.

Amazon, Chevrolet, and Netflix acquired the top five “most intimate” brands.

The most intimate brands in the U.S. have continually outperformed the top brands in the Fortune 500 and S&P indices in terms of revenue and profit over the past decade, according to the study. The 10 most “intimate” brands saw their revenue grow an average of 8.68 per cent over the decade, compared to 3.66 per cent for top Fortune 500 brands, and 4.75 per cent for those topping the S&P index.

‘Frozen II’ becomes the most-watched trailer of all-time for an animated film

Disney has set yet another new record!

The first teaser-trailer of Frozen II‘s released on Wednesday 13 February, has racked up a whopping 116.4 million views in the first 24 hours, breaking Incredibles 2‘s record of the most-watched trailer of all-time for an animated film by 2.8 million views.

This marks the third trailer record for Disney the last few months following The Lion King that became Disney’s most-watched trailer debut ever with 224.6m in November 2018, then Avengers: Endgame broke the all-time record in December 2018 with 289m views.

We can anticipate the release of Frozen II later this year, as online trailer records often lead to box office records. Incredibles 2 notched the best-ever US debut for an animation with $182.6m, and a record opening for Frozen 2 in November won’t be a surprise.

Though the trailer gave away very little about what the sequel will be about, it did keep fans analysing what the film is about and speculating over a new character who might be Elsa’s girlfriend.

Talking about the sequel last year, returning co-writer and co-director Jennifer Lee hinted at the possibility that possibly will get to see the first-ever LGBTQ Disney Princess.

Guess we’ll have to wait with bated breath till Frozen II hits big screens on 22 November.

Sky Esports Tournament in Chennai to showcase both mobile and PC games

The esports rally for the country seems to have been pushing forward at a lucrative pace. With 2018 being a fruitful year with multiple big scale tournaments in place, 2019 is already looking packed with prospect!

The recently announced Sky Esports Tournament in Chennai stands testimony to the same. Slated to be held on 23 and 24 March, the tournament will feature four games, PUBG Mobile, Overwatch, CS GO and Clash Royale.

Says Sky Esports head, Shiva Nandy, “This is going to be one of the biggest if not the biggest tournaments ever in the history of competitive gaming in Chennai. We’re focused on making it a good, memorable one. We really believe in creating a better esports environment in Chennai and South India, through this tournament.”

The organisation behind the event is a branch of the already existing game development studio, Skytou studios, known for their game My Blobby.

With Rs. 10 lakhs already being set as the prize pool, the number, according to the organisers, may further increase as they are in talks with more sponsors and partners. Already onboard partners for the tournament include Monster, Nippon Paints and Phoenix Market city as the venue partners.

Nippon Paints might sound like a fresh name in this segment; however they might just be making their way into esports after a plethora of initiatives in the sports category in the country. They were the associate partners for Chennai Super Kings at IPL, Chennaiyin FC and Pro Volleyball.

PUBG Mobile so far has had around 650 squads registered from South India and the qualifier rounds are already in progress, since the past two weekends, more of which are yet to come. For the other titles, the qualifiers are slated to kick start very soon.

Concludes Nandy, “There have been a lot of things happening with the Indian esports scene. Good and bad. Chennai has been in a hiatus, for a while. You can say a little dormant when it comes to bigger tournaments.

We’re trying to reactivate the esports culture here. We cannot ignore the mobile platform anymore after what we’re witnessing with respect to PUBGm or Clash Royale and many other immensely popular titles.

We would like to make this event a grand success to pave a new path in the near future for us and everyone involved and hopefully travel further.

End of the day, everyone should enjoy the tournament and we’ll do our best to keep it that way. A lot of effort is involved to make the event as pro as possible. It’s still a very big work in progress. This is our first tournament and we would like the esports community to remember us for good things.”

Tinkle series ‘Kalia the Crow’ to be re-launched as ‘Big Baan’

Tinkle is loved all over the country for the fun comic series it carries with every issue. The iconic series from Tinkle, titled Kalia the Crow is getting a reboot after 38 years. The series will be re-launched as Big Baan, which will see a larger forest, more animals, and more adventures in the second issue of February.

Kalia the Crow was the first character to feature in Tinkle and appeared in the very first issue of Tinkle, in November 1980. The series was developed by writer Luis Fernandes and illustrator Pradeep Sathe.

“We wanted to expand the cast of characters and explore the world beyond Kalia the Crow. Chamataka and Doob Doob are very popular, therefore we considered giving them their own adventures,” said Tinkle editor-in-chief Rajani Thindiath.

With this reboot, Tinkle Comics is venturing into the different forests and ecosystems around the country. And through Big Baan, the comic also plans to expose kids to different kind of creatures that live in these environments, from monitor lizards and bisons to vultures and snow leopards.

Thindiath thinks that there cannot be any comparison between the earlier series, Kalia the Crow and the reboot, Big Baan. “Kalia the Crow is iconic with its classic trio—Kalia, Chamataka and Doob Doob,” added she.

The synopsis of the reboot series goes as follows:

What happens when animals of different forests have to share one watering hole? A fight breaks out between different groups, each faction consisting of the following characters:

Doob Doob, the foolish crocodile; Chamataka, the wily jackal; Pu’Rani, a giant turtle who fancies herself the ruler of the great forest., who is carried by four monitor lizards—Uttu, Dakku, Puru and Pushu—named after the four directions, since they have no sense of direction. Pu’Rani also has two bison bodyguards, Thod and Phod.

The reboot plans to offer different reading experience to young readers with a new cast of characters, new environments, new look for the forest and its denizens, a chance to explore animals from across the country and funnier stories and wilder adventures.

Written by Ritu Mahimkar, Aparna Sundaresan and Sean D’mello, illustrated by Archana Amberkar and colourist Sachin Adhare and lettering by Prasad Sawant, the issue will be out in the market on 16 February 2019, providing the readers with a lot more fun adventures waiting to happen in the following months, stated Thindiath.
