Animated short ‘Dive In’ is all about relentless optimism and not giving up

It has been quite sometime now, that animation has gained traction and importance beyond just being a kids medium. It has been explored in various ways across different fields, including advertising and brand promotions. In the recent times, this practice has become more rampant and the experiments clearly reflect, that animation is possibly more effective as an advertising vertical than others.

A recent instance of this would be, Dive In, an animated short produced by Humour Me for a backpack brand named Arctic Fox, that stands for the power of creative dreams and believes in chasing them with relentless optimism and perseverance.

Dive In one of the directors and marketing chief of Arctic Fox, Dhruv Sachdeva said, “We wanted to bring our brand ambassador to life, and what better way to do that than animation? Animation as an art form lends itself perfectly to tell stories that are otherwise not possible in live action. animation when done right has the power of capturing people’s imagination like nothing else.”

Dive In tells the story of an arctic fox in pursuit of a dream in the harsh, unforgiving Arctic tundra. The fox’s goal is to catch an elusive lemming, who always manages to evade its grasp. On the way, the arctic fox encounters a lot of obstacles that present potentially disastrous consequences. The film follows the journey of the fox, who refuses to give up under any circumstances.

The brand Arctic Fox was inspired by the animal of the same name n order to hunt, arctic foxes must dive into the snow again and again. They are often unsuccessful, but they continue to persevere until they succeed. Arctic Fox encourages its community to conquer their doubts and fears, and dive into their dreams, with their backpacks being a conduit to those dreams.

Humour Me is India’s first branded entertainment creative agency who holds a unique position to build culture with their communication products and content. They’re highly imaginative in providing solutions for communication challenges to their clients. The team comprises of screenwriters, directors, music composers, illustrators, art directors, to creative directors, digital planners and account management teams from the advertising world. Their communication pieces exist in unique formats of entertainment, from long-form video content, podcasts, branded music experiences, disruptive documentaries, integrated live shows, to world-class Pixar-like 3D animation short films. We are best known for having helped built brands like Paper Boat, Xiaomi to name a fewTheir mantra is “ADVERTISING 2.0! We aim to re-imagine advertising as if it were invented today”.

Sachdeva added, “Dive In was an extremely ambitious idea. We had seen David Attenborough’s Planet Earth series and fallen in love with the arctic fox as an animal. In this documentary, one sees this snowy little bundle of joy striving to survive in harsh climatic conditions despite the odds. The arctic fox is the

Dhruv Sachdeva

perfect embodiment of how anybody can be successful in the world and achieve their goals. The arctic fox also has an extremely unique hunting style, where it leaps up and dives head first into the snow to try and catch its prey (usually lemmings). This singular focus and optimism inspired us to make this animated film. The film aims to highlight a very simple fact that there are no shortcuts dreams and an overnight success!”

The message that Dive In spreads holds, is of extreme importance in today’s digital era when people can get anything at the push of a button. The truth is if one wants to succeed, one has to continue to ‘dive in’. The entire animation of the film is executed at Delhi and the writing, direction, music and post-production is done in-house at Humour Me itself. The animation of the film is very lifelike and amazingly executed. The entire process took close to four months with over 50 people working tirelessly to achieve an impossible deadline.

Talking about the animation format and the techniques used, Sachdeva mentioned, “Dive In is a highly elaborate 3D animation film. We first created our character concepts and environments. Then came detailed storyboarding, which went through extensive preproduction and multiple discussions on every visual detail. We then worked with an extremely experienced animation team lead by the film’s CG and execution lead, Vrinda Sood.”

The entire film was made in greyscale and the creative team worked very closely with the animators in getting every shot, expression, camera movement, and character movement right. Vrinda and her team went through hours of documentary films on the arctic fox to get every detail of movement and physicality accurate. The final characters were continued to be developed until the team was satisfied with the outcome.

He continued, “The biggest struggle was the snow simulation and interaction! This is where Vrinda and her team were masterful in producing an output which I believe is a first for this country. Like any 3D animation film, the rendering process was a gigantic undertaking which then led to finessing important details of lighting, and character expressions/movement. The film was digitally composited and then finally rendered.”

Dive In is the outcome of deep commitment to a singular focus, constant perseverance, and above all else, relentless optimism despite the odds just like its title suggests. “As Arctic Fox’s creative agency, we had come up with this positioning and tagline at the launch of the brand. The brand’s tagline is “Dive In”. Therefore, it made perfect sense for the film title, concluded Sachdeva.

The animated short correctly resonates the sentiment that the makers imagined it to do. And as they say, “There is no guarantee you will succeed, but if you don’t dive in, you surely won’t!,” give your dreams and self-belief a chance and take that plunge!

‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ official poster released; trailer to follow tomorrow

Twentieth Century Fox dropped a teaser poster for its upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix, as a precursor to the highly anticipated official trailer which is set to arrive tomorrow night.

In a strikingly flamboyant yet psychedelic appearance, the poster is loaded with all the primary mutants of the film, but the cynosure is a fiery Jean Grey being ripped apart by an emerging Phoenix Force.

On the top two horns of the letter ‘x’ are the warring factions, with Magneto and Professor X particularly eye-grabbing.

Also featuring on the cover are renowned mutants such as Cyclops, Beast, Storm, Nightcrawler, Mystique and Quicksilver, alongside newcomers Red Lotus and Selene.

A twelfth installment of the X-Men movie series, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is a sequel to the 2016 hit Apocalypse, and is set nearly a decade after its events, when a rescue mission mishap unleashes the mystic phoenix hiding within Grey.

What’s more, fans can now look forward to the trailer too as it is set to drop tomorrow and is rumored to clock in at two minutes and 24 seconds.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix unleashes in cinemas on 7 June 2019.

Marvel kick-starts countdown to much anticipated ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Even as the marketing campaign for Captain Marvel is going great guns, Marvel has served up a timely reminder – Avengers: Endgame is only two months away!

In what’s arguably the biggest release of the MCU, rumor mill has been fraught with all possible theories and speculations for the upcoming magnum opus as we bid adieu to the first phase of the saga. However, the release is fast approaching as Marvel kick started the countdown on its official Twitter handle with a small promo.

Bereft of any new visions, the clip primarily features certain shots of its earlier teaser trailer which dropped during the Superbowl last month, culminating in the time period that separates us from the movie.

Marvel has opted to keep its cards close to its chest on both occasions so far with highly stealthy teasers that has although stirred up a hornet’s nest on the social media with relentless breakdowns and dissections, hasn’t really revealed anything apart from what we’re already in the know of.

With the release of Captain Marvel just a stone’s throw away, fans can expect a second official trailer in the immediate aftermath. However, it is unlikely to do anything more than just skimming the surface. After all, the catastrophic conclusions of Avengers: Endgame has left such a massive cliffhanger that the studios cannot afford to divulge anything concrete.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame releases on 27 April 2019.

New ‘Detective Pikachu’ trailer introduces a spate of pokemon

The latest trailer for Warner Bros.’ upcoming live-action Detective Pikachu movie introduces a spate of CG pokémon including a menacing and illusive Mewtwo.

Cubone, Machamp, Charizard, and Ludicolo are just some of the pokémon. Previous trailers for the movie reimagined some of Pokémon’s signature creatures as disturbing.

The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Starring Ryan Reynolds as the voice behind Pokémon’s most famous character embarks on a mission to save the world through his investigative abilities and Thunderbolt attacks. Ryan reduced his height and weight (until doctors warned ) to actually become Pikachu. The actor abandoned his daughters, wife, height and so on to really immerse himself into the role.

Directed by Rob Letterman, Detective Pikachu is slated for release in theatres worldwide on 10 May 2019

‘Black Panther’ bags three Oscars

The king of Wakanda has made a big mark at the Oscars!

Acquiring seven nominations for the latest Academy Awards, Marvel’s Black Panther has grabbed three Oscars in categories – ‘Best Costume Design’,  ‘Best Production Design’ and ‘Best Original Score’, the first ever Oscar for Marvel Studios.

Announced by Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry, the Oscar for the costume design went to Ruth Carter, who designed the vibrant, layered, incredible clothes worn by the people of Wakanda. This was Carter’s third nomination (previously nominated for Malcolm X and Amistad ) and she is the first black woman to ever win in the Costume Design category.

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design we turned him into an African king. It’s been my life’s honour to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy. Thank you for honouring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen. Adding vibrainaum to costumes is very expensive!,” Carter told in her speech.

For the Production Design the Oscar was awarded to Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart for building and creating the country of Wakanda; from its buildings, technology, mountains and vistas.

Beachler said in her speech, “I stand here stronger than I was yesterday, I stand here with agency and self-worth because of Ryan Coogler…I stand here because of this man who offered me a better perspective of life, who offered me a safe space, who is patient, and gave me air, humanity and brotherhood, thank you Ryan, I love you… I am stronger because of Marvel, who gave me the opportunity to do my best, who supported the vision of this film and lifted us up every day. Victoria Alonso, Kevin Feige, Louis Esposito and Nate Moore, thank you.”

Ludwig Göransson who won the Oscar for the original score, began his acceptance speech by thanking director Ryan Coogler. “Working with you has been an incredible honour. I remember 12 years ago we were sitting in our dorm room at UC writing the score for your first film, and we’re here 12 years later celebrating one of the most important cinematic moments in history.” This was Göransson’s first Oscar nomination and win. He’s won a Grammy for the Black Panther score, as well as a Golden Globe nomination.

In addition to these three, Black Panther was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Original Song at this year’s awards.

“Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa is our homage to the amazing original work, its simplicity and beauty” – Makers of ‘GGBB’

Written by Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, and immortalised on silver screen by Satyajit Ray, Goopi Byne Baagha Byne holds a special place in the vast canvas of Indian cinema with its unique storytelling and smart execution.

The film has survived time and boundaries to attain the stature of a cult classic and remained one of the favourite films to fall back on, in the kids genre, though it has catered to all age groups alike with equal charm and effect.

Now with its animated take, Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa (GGBB) all set to take the country on a musical roller-coaster ride on 1 March, we can’t wait to witness the adaptation.

Produced by CFSI in association with Karadi Tales, Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa (GGBB) is directed by animator and former professor Shilpa Ranade, with Paperboat Animation Studios executing the stunning animation from script to screen.

Paperboat Animation Studios co-founder and chairman  who’s also the writer and producer Soumitra Ranade commented, “Paperboat Animation has been involved in the entire creative process and that is ideally how it should be for an animation film; right from the preproduction to production and postproduction. The studio has expertise in all aspects and all projects that are taken up see complete involvement of the studio from start to finish.”

The trailer of Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa (GGBB) that was launched on 15 January by renowned poet, lyricist and filmmaker Gulzar, had already set the expectations high.

Shilpa Ranade

In a recent chat with AnimationXpress, director Shilpa Ranade exclaimed, “Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne was a story I grew up with. I had watched Ray’s classic and it had stayed with me. I also read the original story by Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury and was quite surprised to find all the possibilities for a reimagining and retelling. I had got a version of the story to illustrate, retold by Gulzar and during the making of the book illustrations, it struck me that it is a story that is naturally given to animation, and has all the ingredients to make for an engaging narrative, fantasy, adventure, quirky characters and drama. The basic storyline of GGBB remains the same though we have added in our own twists and turns and adapted it to the animation format while detailing the characters and the events. The plot is the same in spirit though we have layered and nuanced it in our own way.”

The animation of Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa looks peculiarly fascinating and the script seems to be mostly adhered to the original story. Talking about the animation format Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiyaa writer and producer Soumitra Ranade commented, “The animation is done in 2D and recalls the book illustration style that it has naturally progressed from. It is also inspired from leather puppetry and takes cues from the performance, design of traditional puppets. This was done since we wanted to do something that was born organically from the lineage of the original and its many retellings and its cultural rootedness.”

A project like Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa is sure to have its share of challenges since the original film has a legacy of a much loved classic which is legendary. The makers had to take cognizance of the hugely popular film and its iconic characters, being revived in a different medium of art. Thus we can very well assume the amount of strenuous work gone behind the script.

“The journey has been long yet very exciting and fulfilling. We went through all the regular steps an animation film goes through, though we were working on something completely unique. We were a miniscule team and had all the requisite expertise, passion to take it through from being just an idea to a film to be able to take to the theater. The drawings for the film came from the drawings I was illustrating for the book and went through the transformation needed for animation. They were essentially pen and ink drawings which were embellished with extreme, heightened and unusual texture and detail. We animated on multiple platforms and employed several ways of animating but the language was staccato and recalls pop ups, book illustrations, puppetry,” Shilpa revealed.

Soumitra Ranade

Soumitra added on the similar line: “Since the script was adapted from the original story, which is like a skeleton upon which you can add flesh, building upon some of the ingredients that lent themselves to animation. The script is heavily dialogue driven and each character has their own particular way of speaking, peculiar usage of language and so on. The personalities were built into the script keeping the fact, that this is a musical. The songs were written as part of the narrative and they are very much an integral part of the storytelling and are situational and particular to what was called for by the way the events were unfolding. We added an immense amount of detail and our own twists and turns while maintaining the spirit of the original text.”

Coming to the music of this musical, the title track and the background score, by music composer Narayan Parashuram (who’s also Karadi Tales co-founder), fits perfectly with the film on the whole. It also sets the mood for the film; there are eight songs in GGBB and each of them elevates each specific situation. All the songs are derived completely from Indian classical music and folk music traditions. They are based on ‘Raaga’ structures and the intricate ‘Taal’ patterns that are core to Indian Classical and folk.

Parashuram mentioned, “The Indian storytelling tradition has always integrated songs and music as part of the narrative. This has been the underlying principle in the music GGBB. All the songs are absolutely integral to the script.  Infact, the dialogue writer of the film, Rohit Gehlowt has also written the lyrics for the songs, which is extremely rare. The musical arrangement consists primarily of traditional Indian acoustic instruments like the Mridangam, Pakhawaj, Khol, Ghungroo Tarang, Dimkee, Uddukkai, Saarangi and Bansuri.”

On being asked if it was difficult to get the permission for adapting the film from Sandip Ray and considering the fact that its local flavour might prevent the animated film from reaching a wider audience, Shilpa informed, “Not at all, he was very welcoming of the idea and gave his permission straightaway. The magnanimity with which this piece of work is shared says a lot about how this story truly belongs to the people. The theme is universal and animation as a medium cuts across any regional differences. Once the audience steps across the threshold of the film they will be transported to the space of the film and believe in the lands and people and events. The film will surely appeal to everyone since it doesn’t speak in a tone that is recognisably associated with any particular region, I think every individual viewer will find a resonance in their own lives and the regions they come from.”

Narayan Parashuram

Gulzar too, spoke highly about the film that received a standing ovation at Anifest India 2014 and has has won the AASIFA Award for best animated feature film, Jury Award for best Art Work at ICFF, Hyderabad, nominated for best film APSA Brisbane, Orbit Live Industry award for best animated feature, and the WIFTS award, Los Angeles. He said, “It’s stunning piece of work and I haven’t seen animation like this before, here in India.”

With such great words being already spoken about the film, it’s definitely going to create quite a stir in the Indian animation industry.“Our endeavour is to pay homage to this amazing work and its simplicity and beauty. We didn’t try to imitate or recreate any of its magic but tried to be true to its spirit while making it our own. We hope it will be received well,” Shilpa and Soumitra concluded. And as Parashuram noted, “The music in Ray’s Goopi Byne Baagha Byne is iconic. The music in GGBB is an endeavour”, we hope that this musical endeavour and labour of love, gets all the love and attention it deserves!

‘First Man’ bags an Oscar marking one giant leap for VFX

One small step for man, One giant leap for mankind.

It is indeed a giant leap for not just mankind but also for the overall VFX scene that convincingly replicated the enigmatic tale of Neil Armstrong in the launchpad years before he marked his historic voyage to the moon. The movie, First Man, that covers the launchpad years of the noted astronaut before he stepped on the moon, has won the Academy Award for visual effects, trouncing a spate of competitors that included space-related fantasy movies like Star Wars and Avengers: Infinity War directed by Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg’s pop-culture movie Ready Player One.

With the aid of miniatures, archival footage, vintage filming techniques and colossal LED screens to re-create the 1969 space mission and the historic ramp-up to it, First Man visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert who also had bagged an Oscar for Blade Runner 2049 rendered his tremendous skills services to this project which managed to recreate the Apollo 11 mission by visual effects.

The Academy Award honours for First Man went to Lambert, Ian Hunter, Tristan Myles, and J.D. Schwalm. Hunter is a repeat winner, he had also won a space-travel Oscar for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar in 2015.
