‘Fortnite’ giving Netflix a run for their money?

The new earning report from the company which had been released earlier revealed that there is a surprising threat with Epic Games’ Fortnite, which they estimate covers ten per cent of television screen time in the U.S. In other countries, it seems to be much lower owing to the lower penetration of their service.

The company added, “We earn consumer screen time, both mobile and television, away from a very broad set of competitors. We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO.”

Given the numbers provided by Polygon, Netflix has nearly 139 million paying memberships per month (prior to its recently announced increase that’s taking place this year), while Fortnite has over 200 million registered users. However, it will not be fair to compare since Fortnite is a free service with cosmetics within the game which they monetise on, sometimes into the billions. So it could still be seen a valid threat.

That last statement came as a surprise, given that the cable premiere films and television show that the company has invested in, including the final season of Game of Thrones.

Netflix noted it is poised to press forward with its original programming, investing billions of dollars on both films and television shows in a bid to garner more eyeballs.

What remains to be seen is whether Fortnite will grow over the next few months, aside from the minor additions and updates it launched every now and then.  We’ll keep you posted.

Disney releases new poster for ‘Dumbo’

Walt Disney Pictures has released a new international poster for its upcoming live-action film Dumbo, featuring our favourite adorable flying elephant.

2019 seems to be the year of live-action Disney reboots. Dumbo is going to be the first to soar into theaters on 29 March, followed by Aladdin and The Lion King in summer.

The official synopsis for Dumbo tells a slightly different story than the original animated film. Rather than simply a young elephant trying to understand the circus, the new Dumbo is building a much bigger world around the beloved character. Here’s the synopsis :

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, Dumbo expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight.

Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

Dumbo has a notable cast that includes Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Joseph Gatt, DeObia Oparei, Roshan Seth, Sharon Rooney, Alan Arkin and Douglas Reith as well as newcomers Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins.

The ‘Carmen Effect’: How one character helped shape a generation

For kids who grew up chasing the elusive thief, Carmen Sandiego was an icon in every sense of the word—she was an impeccably dressed, fearless world traveller, who even taught them a few things along the way. The season one of Carmen Sandiego animated reboot is streaming on Netflix and it is starting from today 18 January.

The animated reboot, produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and DHX Media, will see the master criminal pulling off epic adventures and evading laws with her crew. The series is based on the property which became popular in 1985 with an educational computer game Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego, which also created multiple titles, an animated series (1994-99) and a live-action kids’ quiz show.

The midst of testing kids’ geography knowledge, Carmen did more than simply bestow millennial the rank of investigator or ace detective. An analysis of Carmen-related social conversation over the past five years reveals those clues on a computer screen gave the generation a sense of independence that has outlived those old floppy disks and CD-ROMs.

It’s manifested as a love of travel, passion for geography, or the occasional urge to buy a red coat. For others, Carmen was a first-of-her-kind superhero, showing both girls and boys how to be sly, funny and brilliant as a badass Latina role model. And now, almost 20 years later, her legacy lives on as a brand new series debuts on Netflix 18 January, with Gina Rodriguez voicing the lead role.

“Playing the role of Carmen Sandiego is a dream come true. My sisters and I grew up playing Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? We didn’t know who she was or why she was doing the things she did, but she was this smart, savvy Latina woman who was getting out in the world, seeing all kinds of places and exploring different cultures. I idolised those things about her. And now I’m lucky enough to extend the story of a character who still inspires me every day, introducing kids not just to her adventures, but also revealing new details about her past,” said Rodriguez.

If history’s any indication, the next generation of gumshoes is in for more than a globe-trotting expedition as they follow Carmen and sidekick Player (Finn Wolfhard) around the world. Categorising a selection of Carmen-related tweets uncovered some pretty specific impacts of The Carmen Effect:

Signature Style (60 per cent): Fans can’t get enough of Carmen’s iconic look – her red hat and matching trench have shown up everywhere from high-fashion runways to Halloween parties.

Passport Goals (20 per cent): It is synonymous with “travel” – many frequent fliers fancy themselves a modern-day Carmen, and some even attribute all that virtual jet-setting to an increased sense of wanderlust in adulthood.

Sandiego Smarts (16 per cent): To this day, people admit learning a thing or two from Carmen – many of which they still remember (read: the currency of Thailand or the definition of ‘spelunking’).

Trailblazer (7 per cent): For others, the impact of Carmen went a level deeper – she was considered one of the first great role models, admired for her ambition, independence and intellect.

Beyond these categories, there are countless mentions and references of Carmen in pop culture that elevate her to icon status. From the unforgettable theme song to memories of hours spent playing the computer game in elementary school, it’s clear Carmen never really left.

The upcoming Carmen Sandiego series pays tribute to everything fans loved about the original – each episode is filled with fast facts that’ll turn any kid into a Jeopardy pro, following a heroic (and stylish) Carmen from Indonesia to Ecuador in the fight against V.I.L.E. But unlike past iterations of the franchise, the animated series will reveal one of the biggest mysteries of them all: ‘Who is Carmen Sandiego?’ The first two episodes of the series detail the origin story that led to Carmen becoming the super thief she is today.

IIT Hyderabad takes an AI leap with introduction of B.Tech program in AI

India being synonymous to all things IT has been incorporating new tech into the day to day life. Artificial intelligence is one such technology that has gained a lot of traction worldwide and has evolved in ways that far exceed its original conception. Not only that, even the education system and courses are evolving and expanding with new incorporation of technology. Taking an example, recently Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad has launched a full- proof B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) which will be starting from the upcoming Academic Year (2019-2020).

The course will have the capacity of accommodating around 20 students who are allowed to take the program through the selection entrance of JEE-Advanced. On completion, the students graduating from IIT Hyderabad with degree in AI would have an understanding of both the fundamentals of theory and practical elements of AI and machine learning (ML).

The main objective of IIT Hyderabad behind this  AI leap and initiating Department of Artificial Intelligence is to enable students to become leaders in the industry and academia nationally and internationally and meet the pressing demands of the nation in the areas of AI and machine learning.

Speaking about the importance of this course, IIT Hyderabad director UB Desai , communicated to the media that “The basic aim is to create a complete ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence Academics and Research at IIT Hyderabad. This involves BTech, MTech and different minor programs in AI. Moreover, the R&D will be strongly entwined with academics.”

Further, the ethical impact of AI and its technologies on areas such as privacy, bias and related issues will also be a key component of this B.Tech. program. It is important that the next generation of people trained in AI be sensitised to these things and are cognizant to the impact of the technology they develop.

Highlighting the salient features of this course, IIT Hyderabad dean of research and development Sumohana Channappayya, said that “AI solutions are particularly promising for India [given the availability of a large corpus of data] where it can have a major positive impact on several critical domains such as healthcare, crop and soil management, weather prediction, surveillance and security, and defence. Long term and robust solutions to problems in these domains require a systematic and disciplined approach that is rooted in the fundamentals of AI. However, the demand for professionals trained in this area far exceeds the current supply. The BTech program in AI is a step in the direction of addressing this highly skewed demand-supply scenario.”

Further Channappayya expressed that the potential for AI to improve the quality of human lives is tremendous. This will not only train students in the fundamentals of computer science, AI and ML but it will also sensitise them to the ethical issues in deploying AI-based solutions in a various sphere.

With so many advancements happening in AI space, there is no denying the fact that AI is poised to disrupt the Indian ecosystem as well.
