LESSON

LESSON, on Ingmar Bergman’s 1978 film HÖSTSONATEN/AUTUMN SONATA, is one of a number of videographic works of spatial montage that Catherine Grant has made about Bergman’s work to be screened at events to mark the 100th anniversary of the Swedish director’s birth on July 14, 1918. Also see her co-authored video PERSONA NON GRATA SONATA (made with Amber Jacobs here: . https://vimeo.com/251331908. Each of these videos uses its multiple-screen form in the service of a poetic analysis through synchronous performance, a playing together of cinematic motifs, similarities, repetitions or variations that would otherwise only be meaningfully apprehended as such sequentially in the audiovisual time-based medium. Safe Spaces with Trevor Noah

Please see full project here- https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/trevor-noah-alex-grigg/ WeTransfer presents: Safe Spaces with Trevor Noah. “Safe spaces have become very controversial, but Trevor Noah can’t see what all the fuss is about. At The New York Times’ Get With The Times event at Northwestern University, the comedian and host of The Daily Show explained why he’s fascinated by the whole discussion.” This was a little film commissioned by the fine folks at WeTransfer as part of their WePresent initiative. It was a real delight make a film to accompany some of Trevor Noah’s thoughts, particularly about words and language being weaponized. I did an interview about the process which you can see in full here- -https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/trevor-noah-alex-grigg/ Directed by Alex Grigg Performed by Trevor Noah live at Northwestern University New York Times’ “Get with the Times” event. Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions — designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more — rarely (if ever) succeed, and that’s the point. “The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don’t always know what the best answer is,” Giertz says. “It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn’t the answer, but at least you’re asking the question.”
