AMA – a short film by Julie Gautier

JULIE:
“Ama is a silent film. It tells a story everyone can interpret in their own way, based on their own experience. There is no imposition, only suggestions.
I wanted to share my biggest pain in this life with this film. For this is not too crude, I covered it with grace. To make it not too heavy, I plunged it into the water.
I dedicate this film to all the women of the world.”
Julie

JULIE:
“Ama est un film sans parole qui raconte une histoire que chacun peut interpréter à sa manière, selon son propre vécu, tout est suggéré, rien n’est imposé.
J’ai voulu mettre dans ce film ma plus grande douleur en ce monde. Pour qu’elle ne soit pas trop crue je l’ai enrobée de grâce. Pour qu’elle ne soit pas trop lourde je l’ai plongée dans l’eau.
Je dédie ce film à toutes les femmes du monde.”

2017 Golden Ticket Challenge winner Te Hu with the theme, THU Clans.

I’ve been a regular attendee at Trojan Horse Was a Unicorn for a few years now. Formerly in Portugal, THU is landing in Malta this year, and the location looks stunning.

What’s exciting is, you can enter the Golden Ticket Challenge art competition to get there yourself. There are two categories – student and professional – and winners will receive a ticket to THU, flights to Malta and 5-star accommodation. The first placed student also receives a Wacom mobile pro and a Lenovo mobile workstation.

So, what do you have to do?

To enter, you need to create a piece of artwork on a set theme, ‘Land of Wonder’, which is inspired by the new Malta location.

Submissions opened on May 14th and run until July 9th. Winners are announced on ArtStation – which is partnering with THU on the Golden Ticket Challenge – July 16th.

What are you waiting for – find out more here: www.trojan-unicorn.com/main-event/golden-ticket

Oh, and how good does THU look already? On the VFX front, some of the speakers include ILM’s Hal Hickel, Black Panther vfx supe Geoffrey Baumann, DD’s Matthew Butler, vfx Leslie Ekker and more. And then there’s production designer Alex McDowell, director Jorge Gutierrez, and concept designer Ian McCaig. Seriously, amazing people.

THU takes place September 24-29, 2018 in Valletta, Malta.

Second edition of Bengaluru AVGC B2B Summit concludes with resounding success.

After the initial season of Bengaluru B2B Summit concluded successfully in November, it was clear that the Govt. Of Karnataka will be backing ABAI for more such events. The second edition of the AVGC B2B summit was organised in tandem with GAFX 2018. The two day event concluded on the inaugural day of GAFX 2018 and the reactions for the B2B summit were even better than the last time.

Biren Ghose

The main agenda for the second edition of GAFX B2B summit was focused on creating more opportunities and establishing a strong ground for the community in the AVGC sector. talking to AnimationXpress, ABAI president Biren Ghose commented, “Seeing is believing. being here is seeing AVGC live. The excitement is palpable, we’ve had about 2500 people today. It was the culmination of three different streamlines that are working concurrently. It was the concluding day of B2B and it’s now going to be very firmly vertical with what we do at ABAI and with the Govt. of Karnataka. Because at the end of the day, we’ve been inspired by the best projects around the world, but it must result in business which will help to grow the ecosystem and the community.”

He also informed that they’re going to have sessions with the ministry including VIPs and dignitaries to discuss what went down in this interaction and share the surprises of future projects. ” Technology is entering the world of interaction and is already a big part of VFX and Animation industry; and it’s a great partnership for Unity to have their first developer day with us at GAFX. Although it’s a fairly recent edition , it was completely packed and we’ve seen that the future of content creation is going to be where production and post-production collaborates.”

While, the stringent time restriction which was there the last time seemed to have vanished and both the fraternity of buyers and sellers looked overjoyed about it. While talking to AnimationXpress, many of the buyers, a lot of whom were here in India for the first time, expressed how pleased they were with the event.

The second edition of B2B has much changed from its previous one. The purpose f B2B is to better the opportunities for Indian IPs to showcase them to the world market. Ghose further added,” In the last 15 years, we had huge disadvantages both in terms of cost and preparation. B2B brings the market to the Indian IPs here and therefore with every succeeding B2B is to raise the quality of the game. We’ve had elimination rounds for elevate one and two of Govt. of Karnataka which is open to all tech industries. And I’m happy to let you know that after two rounds of elevate out of 200 sectors, more than 15 shortlisted ones are from the AVGC industry which is unprecedented in the company.”

Second edition of the B2B summit at Bengaluru

Many of them resonated with one single thought that they had never expected so much of creativity and different IPs from the Indian sellers. While they were pleased, they also insisted the sellers on keeping in mind their target audience and set the appeal, to global or national.

While some of the content, the buyers asserted, had absolute global appeal, some of them had a rather regional or country specific appeal, which must be kept in mind when pitching.

During the conclusion ceremony, the buyers, both indigenous and foreign shared their views on the event, content and how to go about it. Appreciating the support of the government, the buyers rested their case with hopes for even bigger events like this one, where they can explore more content for the Indian sub continent.

A representative of the govt., present at the event, stressed on the points of further boosting the AVGC sector of the state. He said facilities are being brought in through various programs which will decrease the production cost of further content.

With a few statements of gratification from the audience and sellers alike, the AVGC B2B event’s 2nd edition called its curtains with prospects of an even better one next time.

Tremendous enthusiasm seen on day two of GAFX 2018

The crowd went back home with loads of information and exciting ideas from the speakers on day one, only to allow themselves to grasp some more on day two. GAFX 2018’s day two was a hustling affair, with numerous sessions taking place at various locations in The Lalit Ashok. Students and professionals rushed from one hall to another to intake as much knowledge as possible.

Day two began with an interesting session by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Kevin Hudson wherein he showcased the making of the feature, Weeds.

Having taken the insights from him, the crowd waited in anticipation for the next session by Mr. X VFX Luke Groves. His session showed the great work VFX does with the VFX case study of Shape of Water.

While one hall talked about the fun behind the making of films, the other hall had speakers to discuss about the women force in the AVGC industry, which had female entrepreneurs taking up the stage and speaking from their heart how they evolved in this industry and encouraged the audience by stating how every woman can do whatever she can. Kranti Sarma moderated the panel discussion.

The women panel shared their views about the industry and left the dais to be taken up by the leading animation studio heads. It was a question and answer session on the scenario of Indian animation. Ashish Kulkarni asked questions to the panel which were direct and to the point. The panel had Jayakumar, Viren Patil, Arjun Mahadevan, Cyrus Mistry and RK Chand to share their experiences in the field of animation.

Kulkarni didn’t forget to mention how AnimationXpress helped them find artists for the studio and has worked as their mouthpiece on the social front. The panellists thanked the team of ABAI and the Karnataka government for taking up an initiative like this.

With informative sessions going around one corner of the event place, the other managed to gather a huge crowd as NY VFXWaala’s Prasad Sutar showed the making of Padmavat, the movie that was in the news for all the reasons, one being the tremendous VFX that went behind its making. Speaking to AnimationXpress, Sutar said, “Creating a one-minute VFX is also quite a task with the amount of hard-work going behind it. The VFX industry is booming and its going to be an integral part of the creative industry in the coming future.” And this sure reflected in his presentation where he showed the VFX work of Padmavat.

The awestruck audience where in there for a treat with another session on VFX happening in the same hall wherein DNEG India’s Pranay, Merzin Tavaria and Michael Groebe hooked the crowd with their upcoming work and aslo witnessed an invigorating session by Jason Schugardt.

The students present at the event enjoyed the sessions happening since last day, and the second day gave them more to enjoy with the screenings of Annecy 2017’s best works and a special screening of Revolting Rhymes, which hooked the audience.

The enticing second day saw larger number of audience. The campus was filled with students and professionals wanting to showcase their talent in the ongoing painting and sculpture making workshops seen at every place. The entire zone looked a bright hue of blue and pink, creating curiosity and anticipation for the crowd to attend the upcoming sessions of day three!

GAFX 2018 witnessed how women in AVGC will leave no stone unturned

With the increasing feminism and the overly active feminist creating roots everywhere, GAFX 2018 paved way to not feminism but the female power in the industry of AVGC. It was never just a domain of men and the women on the panel have proved it right with the work they have done and the output they have given over the years.

Seated on the dais were Shiji Sunil, Vijayalakshmi, Sukanya Srinivas and Priyanka with moderator being Kranti Sarma. The session was a hit with the ladies and also the gentlemen sitting in the audience. The discussion focused on empowering women and giving every woman a chance and right to have her say and place in each and every area she wishes to explore.

The audience applauded when Srinivas said understand whom you are working with. “Know enough to be dangerous and do what you think.” Priyanka asked women to not take unnecessary suggestions from anyone. “We encourage women and men equally, it’s about the output we receive, she added.

The panelists were keen about the learning pattern. The schooling needs to be strong and there needs to be bridge between art and technology is what all the speakers nodded to. Taking a new route and following different patterns in the work-space is what the industry is focusing on.

Vijayalakshmi inspired the women present by quoting them as the storytellers at home. “You are everything at home and at work. But also, be yourself. Have dreams and follow them and don’t forget top follow your heart, “she added.

There is no such thing as giving women a different treatment or hiring more females. Anyone who does the job well deserves to be in the place assigned to that particular job. Women need to open up more to the avenues available to them. Creative fields have minds which create, then women or men, it doesn’t matter until they are passion driven, focused and hardworking.

The discussion was of course about the women in the industry of AVGC, but it sure shared insights to all, not to forget the force that made the session interesting were again, WOMEN!

“We are multitaskers. Good wives, good mothers, good daughters. Be happy for your success and let your passion guide you. The first rhyme created by me made me feel like I am going to live forever,” said a beaming Shiji.

Keen to know more and wanting the session to last a little longer, audience wished for more stories to be heard, but time boundary made the organisers say goodbye to the audience. But of course, with some good announcement which is going to make India proud and the women in India held their heads high with pride, as ABAI inaugurated its women wing.

This will focus on the issues faced by women in the working space and how more encouragement can be given to this gender to make a mark in this ever-growing industry.

“This panel is the beginning of an important journey in ABAI and will leave no stone unturned, “concluded Biren Ghose.

The panel was inaugurated by Ghose and K-Tech Karnataka representative Pratibha with mementos.
