Rob McElhenney to bring animated horror comedy ‘Spikeface’ to Rooster Teeth

Rob McElhenney

SVOD content creator, Rooster Teeth has ordered eight episodes of the original animated dark comedy, Spikeface from RCG, the production company owned by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, the creators, executive producers and stars of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Based on an idea by writers and executive producers Geoff Barbanell and Itai Grunfeld, the eight-episode original series will see McElhenney as the executive producer along with 3 Arts Entertainment and Rooster Teeth co-founders Matt Hullum and Burnie Burns.

Spikeface tells the story of one of the world’s greatest horror icons, who slaughters a couple at a roadside motel. Later when he finds out that they have a baby girl, he decides to raise the orphan as his own. This angers his roommates (other horror icons) who live to destroy people and not help raise them.

Burnie Burns

“So many of us at Rooster Teeth are huge fans of Rob and we can’t wait to help him and his team bring Spikeface to life. Plus this sends a really strong message to young people that if you study, work hard and produce over a decade of top quality beloved network television programming, well then maybe you can get your own show on the internet too,” Rooster Teeth co-founder and chief creative officer Burnie Burns commented on developing the project with McElhenney.

Spikeface is set to premiere in 2019 as a Rooster Teeth original series, on their streaming service available at RoosterTeeth.com, Xbox One, Apple TV, iOS and Android apps, with memberships starting at $4.99 a month. This will not be Rooster Teeth’s first dip into the world of horror-comedy as its third feature film, Blood Fest  was a self-aware slasher flick that premiered at SXSW. The casting and more details about the release date are yet to be revealed.

Simon Kinberg’s ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ will be mostly adhered to comics

During Deadpool 2’s premiere in New York, producer Simon Kinberg revealed that his directorial debut, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be much more grounded to the comic version, than the divisive X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Originally slated to release this November, the movie is now pushed to 14 February 2019.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix marks Kinberg’s directorial debut, after spending more than a decade contributing to this X-Men franchise. He wrote and produced X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse besides producing Deadpool, The Fantastic Four. The upcoming projects in his sleeve are The New Mutants, Gambit and X-Force.

Simon Kinberg

“I’m trying to think of what new I can say that’s new. I directed the movie and it’s much more loyal to the original comic than X-Men 3, which told the Dark Phoenix story. It’s a movie that involves extraterrestrial characters, which is not something that we’ve done in the X-Men franchise before, and is something that is a huge part of the Dark Phoenix saga in the comics,” Kinberg mentioned.

The first two movies of the franchise, X-Men (2000) and X2: X-Men United (2003) which were directed by Bryan Singer, ended with a teaser that the next movie would follow the Dark Phoenix saga. Though, Singer did not return for the next movie, Brett Ratner took the reins for the final installment of the original trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), which followed the Dark Phoenix saga.

However, the original trilogy was eradicated by the time-bending events of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), which allowed the studio to tackle this story with a new cast, from a different approach.

Commenting on the rumors about the tone being darker than other X-Men movies Kinberg added, “The tone is… I wouldn’t say it’s darker, but it’s more intense. It’s more real and grounded, and hopefully more relatable, a little less operatic than we’ve been in the past.”

This movie will continue to follow the ‘tradition’ of the setting in the previous three films, which are all set in different decades.  X-Men: First Class (2011) is set in the 1960s, tracing the first group of mutants that came together under Charles Xavier’s leadership, X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) set in 1970s, in a darker present-day timeline, X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) was set in the 1980s, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be set in the 1990s, although a specific year has not yet been revealed.

Google Assistant will soon be able to call restaurants and make a reservation for you

Google calls this feature “Duplex” and it’ll roll out at some point in the future.

Google showed a crazy (and terrifying) new feature for the Google Assistant at its I/O developer conference. The Assistant will soon be able make calls for you to make a reservation — maybe for a salon appointment or to reserve a table at a restaurant that doesn’t take online bookings. For now, this was only a demo, but the company plans to start testing this feature with the Assistant in the summer.

In the demo, Google showed how you can tell the Assistant that you want to make a haircut appointment. The Assistant can then make that call, talk to whoever answers and make the request. In the demo, the Assistant even handled complicated conversations, adding small little hints (“ummm”) that make it sound natural. Even for calls that don’t quite go as expected, the Assistant can handle these interactions quite gracefully — though Google obviously only demoed two examples that worked out quite well.
