Commerce comes calling for Indian M&E industry

SEPC vice chairman Maneck Davar spoke to the AnimationXpress on the format of the upcoming edition of enTTech and why is exactly that the commerce is calling for Indian M&E.

“We have purposely ensured that this edition of enTTech is solely focussed on B2B matchmaking rather than the panels and sessions,” said Davar. “This drives the focus on the core business aspect. It is our endeavour that the International delegates and their Indian counterparts have meaningful meetings.”

“B2B matchmakings can be scheduled by the registered delegates through our online matchmaking portal. Pre-fixed meetings of half hour slots will be conducted akin to speed pitching.”

Focussing on animation, AR/VR, gaming, VFX and live action, enTTech 2018 has seen a fabulous response with over 150 delegates from 42 countries eager to do business with India. There is clearly not only demand for the skilled Indian workforce but also that Indian studios are moving up the value chain by stepping up to co-productions.

Davar further explained, “Department of commerce has also extended their support for the event. It truly is commerce calling for the Indian M&E industry and we hope that the Indian organisations will make the most of it.”

‘Beyblade Burst’ season one launches on kids channel in Belgium and the Netherlands

SUNRIGHTS INC., the New York based entertainment rights management company announced new distribution for Beyblade Burst season one, with episodes premiering on kids channels in the Netherlands and Belgium.

SUNRIGHTS Inc. managing director Kaz Soeda quoted, “As the series has progressed, audiences have grown and the Beyblade Burst fan base in the Netherlands and Belgium has surpassed even our own expectations. We look forward to continuing our licensing relationships with Nickelodeon, Medialaan and RTL, and we’re confident that the Beyblade Burst phenomenon will only continue to grow throughout the region.”

Belgium’s Nickelodeon has licensed the show’s first season run of 51 episodes and will begin airing them from 12 March 2018, with five new episodes each week in French. Medialaan’s children’s entertainment channel, Kadet, Belgium and RTL 7’s B.O.Z. in the Netherlands will pick up the second half of the season. The additional Beyblade Burst season one episodes will begin airing on Kadet in April and have already started airing on B.O.Z. since February 18.

“We are pleased that these channels have found initial success with Beyblade Burst and are committed to carrying the series, which is garnering a huge response from viewers,” said Soeda.

Reaching multiple demographic groups, Beyblade Burst has spawned its following and demand for the anime series. The show’s inaugural season, created by d-rights inc. and produced by OLM, introduces viewers to Valt Aoi, who is crazy about Beyblade, the popular spinning top that has been fuelling competitions all over for over a decade. Aoi’s best friend, Shu Kurenai, is hailed as a Beyblade prodigy, is one of the national Beyblade tournament’s supreme four. Inspired by Kurenai’s accomplishments, Aoi sets his sights on reaching the national tournament. As he battles, Aoi broadens his circle of friends and reaches new heights. He begins to dream of becoming the best bladers in the world.

Beyblade Burst premiered on Netflix around the globe at the start of the holiday retail season and earned an extra boost with the introduction of the Beyblade Burst product line from Hasbro, which features a dynamic “burst” component, bringing more excitement to the successful battling play pattern. Fans can elevate their physical play to a digital playing field by scanning their Beyblade Burst tops into the Beyblade Burst app which is available in the App Store and Google Play. This app allows them to customise and battle with their collection digitally with friends through local Wi-Fi.

Initially released in the U.S. (Disney XD) in December 2016, the first season of Beyblade Burst has been licensed by SUNRIGHTS INC. to television platforms in Canada (Teletoon, Disney XD), Latin America (Cartoon Network Latin America), Germany (Nickelodeon), Australia (Channel Go!), New Zealand (TVNZ), France (Canal J, Gulli), Spain (Boing), Portugal (Biggs), Greece (Star) and Turkey (Cartoon Network) among others.

Hasbro is the master toy licensee for the brand, and SUNRIGHTS is working with several licensing agents in key markets around the world to expand the brand’s licensed product lines.

Netflix announces ‘Luke Cage’ season two launch date on YouTube

The streets of Harlem are about to sound the celebratory knell as its saviour Luke Cage is returning for his second outing this June, and has already forewarned the outlaws about the same.

In a short clip released by Netflix announcing the date of the second season’s premier, one can find Cage doing what Cage does best – braving wild fire, fending off a barrage of bullets and of course, belting the baddies black and blue.

The Defender, whom we last saw in the superhero ensemble featuring Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist alongside him, returns for his next solo outing after a barnstorming debut in 2016. Although much isn’t known of the upcoming series as Marvel and Netflix have opted to keep things under the wrap, Cage certainly has a new mission to accomplish and suffice to say he’s more than up for it.

The “date announcement” clip doesn’t give away much though, but the fans awaiting the return of Cage can at least mark their calendars as new episodes are scheduled to premier on 22 June 2018 on Netflix.

Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, Luke Cage features Mike Colter in the titular role of the Herculean crusader and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

enTTech kicks of with delegates sharing their agendas for the conference

SEPC (Services & Export Promotion Council), in association with MEAI (Media & Entertainment Association of India) and TVAGA (Telangana VFX, Animation and Gaming Association), and supported by the department of commerce, has put together India’s biggest media and entertainment services market – enTTech 2018 which went live today at Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai. The market, spread over two days (March 07 – 08) will see speed matchmaking between 100 international delegates and their Indian counterparts.

SEPC DG Sangeeta Godbole, the initiator of this effort, details, “We have been surprised by the response and support of the industry. We received over 150 delegates from 42 countries in less than two months. Out of these, 100 delegates are finalised and will be participating in B2B matchmaking with the Indian counterparts.”

From left: Maneck Davar, Vivek Nair, Sangeeta Godbole, Clyde DeSouza, Stephen Mascarenhas

The event commenced with inauguration and lamp lighting. The lamp was lit by the dignitaries on the dias- Sangeeta Godbole, SEPC chairman Vivek Nair, SEPC vice chairman Maneck Davar, Stephen Mascarenhas from Prime Focus World and VR film-maker, speaker and consultant Clyde De’Souza.

This was followed by all the delegates introducing themselves, giving a brief of their company profile and sharing the agenda for the conference. Companies from Hungary, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Mauritius, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Chile and many more, spoke about the kind of content they have brought or the kind of content they are looking to buy. This made it easier for the delegates to connect with the right people.

Godbole further elaborates, “The aim of enTTech has been to be the one source stop for service industry in the M&E market. India itself has a huge consumption capacity for services which is often ignored. One such example is DRDO Labs which is looking for capable AI, AR/VR, animation and gaming solutions and will be at enTTech to look at the right partners.

“We have realised that apart from entertainment there are huge possibilities in application of VFX, AR/VR and animation in research and development for young Indian companies, especially in the realm of  augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR). This open countless avenues in a sector which is now largely limited to entertainment. It would be a new dimension to the audio visual field and would also be a big boost to the energies of young aspiring companies.”

“There is a large scope for M&E services not only for public sector such as aviation, defence, railways and space research but also in private enterprises including healthcare, education, automobile, real estate and more importantly automation in every industry. We expect this market to grow at a consolidated CAGR of 35 per cent plus over the next five years, year on year.”

SEPC vice chairman Maneck Davar details on enTTech’s format, “We have purposely ensured that this edition of enTTech is solely focussed on B2B matchmaking rather than the panels and sessions. This drives the focus on the core business aspect. All meetings are pre-scheduled using our B2B matchmaking platforms for 15 minute slots. It is our endeavour that the international delegates and their Indian counterparts have meaningful meetings.”

MEAI secretary Ankur Bhasin is appreciative of the council’s efforts and adds, “The animation and VFX industry is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 17.2 per cent over 2017–21 to reach a size of Rs. 131.7 billion, driven by a steady 9.5 per cent growth in animation and a 25 per cent growth in the VFX segment. International projects continue to account for a lion’s share of the VFX industry revenues at over 70 per cent, with Hollywood studios leveraging the skill set and cost advantages of Indian talent.”

“The animation services market in 2017 continued to be dominated by outsourced projects from television and film sectors, which accounted for around 85 per cent of the total animation services turnover in India. It is not surprise that M&E is the buzz sector. We are thankful for SEPC to show this initiative and are sure that this market will continue to grow and emerge as a must attend event not only in India but in entire Asia. MEAI will continue to extend its complete support for the event and we look to partner in future editions of enTTech as well.”

With the first day ending with delegates networking after the sessions only makes the next day (tomorrow) more exciting. The initial introduction having concluded, the participants can expect a full fledged focus on one on one B2B meetings while simultaneous panel discussions look promising as well. While speaking to us, a number of participants, both indigenous and overseas stated their excitement about the meetings tomorrow. With a strong focus on crisp time slots, enTTech looks to conclude with a successful maiden edition tomorrow.
