St. Vincent: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Jan. 22, 2018 | Bob Boilen — Whenever I imagined a St. Vincent Tiny Desk Concert, it was always going to be loud and electric. But I didn’t see this coming – the brilliant guitarist arrived at NPR with one steel string acoustic guitar and without a warm-up or soundcheck. Annie Clark stood at my desk, in front of a few hundred-plus NPR employees and close friends, and hit us hard with her un-amplified voice, unplugged guitar, her checkered wardrobe and most importantly, her songs.

These three tunes, “New York,” “Los Ageless” (not Los Angeles), and “Slow Disco” are all from her recent record MASSEDUCTION (not Masseducation). It’s not the guitar-heavy record we’re used to hearing from St. Vincent. In fact, album producer Jack Antonoff (of the bands Bleachers and Fun.) thought “New York” was a better piano melody than a guitar tune, so Annie had Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) perform it.

Stripped of texture and flash, the wordplay pops in these songs. The cross references between the first two bi-coastal songs are clearer. Her love of New York and her mere liking of Los Angeles and its obsession with youth and appearance are more apparent in these spare arrangements.

There’s a bravery here, too, that should not go unnoticed. Behind the sunglasses and red beret is an artist who usually presents herself as part of a choreographed production. St. Vincent’s current one-person shows are powered by backing tracks, lighting and lots of stage cues. It’s the sort of performance that feels more about execution in my mind. This stripped-down set is more about emotion, more about a one-on-one connection, and that’s the bravery. To come out from the lights and the effects, leaving the laptop sync behind, pulled me into these songs in ways both the album and her live show hadn’t. I’m not faulting the record or the concert, I just found something in these songs, in this setting that had glazed past me before. I’m curious if that will happen to you.

Set List

“New York”
“Los Ageless”
“Slow Disco”

The New York Times – The Interpreter – Director's Montage.

After 200 years of expansion, democracy’s growth in the world has stalled. A handful of democracies like Venezuela and Hungary are backsliding into authoritarianism. And even in established Western democracies, voters are losing faith in democratic institutions and norms. The New York Times created a new series to explain this hard subject, and they were kind enough to bring me onboard for this journey. I was hired to create a series of fun animation to smooth out this heavy theme. This is a montage of my favorite parts and some shots that didn’t make into the final cut. You can check the final piece here. Credits. Direction, Design and Animation: Ariel Costa (BlinkMyBrain) Producer: Mae Ryan, Larry Buchanan Additional Animation: Aleksander Saharovsky

Pune Comic Con 2018 delayed indefinitely owing to infrastructure issues

A still from Pune Comic Con 2017

The dust may have settled on the Comic Con mania after three months of delirious fanfare and fanaticism, but the city of Pune may have to wait a while to experience it all over again as the organisers have apparently pushed the dates down for indefinite time.

Sighted unavailability of proper venue to host, the Pune Comic Con, which began in only 2016, has been thereby put on the ice for now. Appraising about the reasons to AnimationXpress, Comic Con India founder Jatin Verma said, “Pune Comic Con 2018 edition is unfortunately, indefinitely delayed. We wanted to bring the biggest show to the city, however, infrastructure issues faced by us have made it difficult for us to execute our unique show this year.”

Comic Con India founder Jatin Verma

Commencing as merely an express show in 2016, the maiden edition of full-fledged Comic Con in Pune took place a year later at the Deccan College Ground in Yerawada, Pune, and was received to a thronging audience. Despite the makeshift venue, the event observed as much success as elsewhere in the country, but the circumstances are totally different this time around.

Until the issue of a solid venue is resolved, the program remains hanging by the balance. But an upbeat Verma is inclined to see through the rose-tinted glasses. He says, “We hope to resolve this soon and be back in the city. Pune fans have been awesome and we hope to continue the show in near future.”

The Pune Comic Con 2018 was supposed to happen sometime in February or March.
