Meet Hovsep Beglaryan, one of the last living Armenian tightrope dancers. An orphan, Hovesp was trained by Zhora and Knyaz, once fierce competitors who united over their dedication to keep this art alive. Tightrope dancing, once an extremely respected art, has been fading from existence in recent years. A few decades ago there were more than 20 families practicing this art throughout Armenia but today there are only a few who continue the tradition.

Experience a sunrise in one of the world’s most beautiful town squares, Republic Square, in Yerevan, Armenia. See the city wake up as if you’re actually right there. Before the independence of Armenia, this square was called Lenin Square. A statue of the Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin stood in the center from 1940 to when it was removed in 1991, setting the stage for Armenia’s dissolution from the Soviet Union a few months later. Republic Square is now considered Armenia’s most important civic space.

360° Zoetrope: The Horse In Motion (1878)

A 360-degree video essay documenting how the eye perceives continuous motion from the progression of individual still frames. To demonstrate this, the 15 still frames of Eadweard Muybridge’s “The Horse In Motion” are laid out inside of a 360-degree sphere, which is then rotated at a gradually increasing velocity until each individual frame cycles at a rate of 15 frames per second. Since the sequence was set to 30fps, the frames take on the illusion of continuous motion when the sphere is rotated at a velocity of 720-degrees (2 full rotations) per second. Nvidia ceases new subscriptions for Mental Ray, plugins; FAQs answered

Nvidia will no longer be offering new subscriptions to the Mental Ray plugins for Maya and 3ds Max, as well as Mental Ray standalone. Current customers who have purchased licenses from Nvidia will continue to receive support through their Advanced Rendering Forum for the remainder of their subscription terms.

All Nvidia Mental Ray plugin customers with a subscription valid in November 2017, including educational license holders, are eligible to receive a license extension.

With this recent development, a lot of users might be concerned or confused about the future operations regarding Mental Ray. Here are the answers to some of the most common FAQs.

What is happening to Mental Ray?

Nvidia will no longer offer new subscriptions to the Nvidia Mental Ray plugins for Maya and 3ds Max, as well as Mental Ray standalone from 20 November 2017 onward.

There will be maintenance releases with bug fixes throughout 2018 for plugin customers.

What if I need to use Mental Ray beyond my subscription term?

All Mental Ray plugin customers with a subscription valid in November 2017, including educational license holders, will be eligible to receive a license extension. This is to cover any ongoing or upcoming projects customers may have requiring Mental Ray that go beyond the end date of their license subscription.

How long will Nvidia provide support services for Mental Ray?

Nvidia plans to support Mental Ray for the foreseeable future in line with their contractual obligations with licensees. The public Mental Ray support forum will remain open.

How long will Autodesk provide support services for their embedded Mental Ray?

Autodesk’s actual support plans of Mental Ray in the legacy editions of their products Maya and 3ds Max are not clear yet. Nvidia plans to continue to provide Mental Ray support to Autodesk accordingly.

How long will software companies that integrate Mental Ray (like MatiCAD or ViSoft) provide support for it?

On this part, the company commented, “Our support obligations to our ISVs extend into the 2019/2020 timeframe, and we will honour them. We have briefed these partners about our plan to discontinue support for Mental Ray after the end of our current contract, and we expect that they will opt to implement another rendering product by that time.”

What about Service Packs or Bug Fix updates?

There will be maintenance releases with bug fixes throughout 2018 for plugin customers. They will also add support for the upcoming Nvidia Volta GPU generation. These releases will be announced in the Mental Ray topics of the Advanced Rendering Forum.

Can I purchase or renew my license subscription of Mental Ray?

As of 20 November 2017, new licenses of Mental Ray products would not be available for purchase anymore. However, licenses purchased before that date can still be managed in the Nvidia Flexera licensing portal, for example, to move the license(s) to another machine.

Current customers and educational institutions can request an extension to their license term.

I recently purchased a Mental Ray product. Can I get a full refund?

The standard Nvidia refund policies apply which is 30 days after purchase. You can contact your reseller or, if purchased in the Nvidia online store, you can refer to its “returns and cancellations” guidelines to process a return within 30 days of purchase.

Who can I talk to if I have questions about my Mental Ray subscription?

If you have questions about this program, please contact your reseller, local Nvidia representative, or send email to mentalray@NVIDIA.com.

Why is Mental Ray being discontinued?

The company plans to bring AI and further GPU acceleration to graphics, Nvidia continues to focus on developing SDKs and technologies for software development partners who create professional ray tracing products. Nvidia will be focusing on bringing GPU accelerated ray tracing technology to every rendering product out there. Therefore, it further invests into core rendering technology, like:

> NVIDIA OptiX and real-time ray tracing platforms for next-generation GPU architectures.
> MDL, the open Material Definition Language.
> NVIDIA IndeX, our platform technology for visualisation and computing of multi-valued volumetric and embedded geometry data.
> NVIDIA Iray for physically based rendering platforms focusing on the CAD, product and architectural design markets.

We hope we got most of your questions answered!

SIGGRAPH Asia: Yoshifumi Kitamura explains vast possibilities of AI, AR and VR in dynamic aware interiors

The future, is near. So near, that you can see it.

Out of a host of amazing sessions on 27 November, the first day of SIGGRAPH Asia 2017, one was Artificial Intelligence Meets Virtual Reality and Augmented Realities.

The objective of the workshop was to invite scholars and practitioners to discuss synergies between VR and AR, AI and machine learning. A cross-disciplinary team of experts with a background in computer science, human-computer interaction (HCI), psychology/cognitive sciences, culture/communication studies, design and art were gathered to develop this fascinating intersection.

Aspects ranging from user experience, technologies applications, methods, cultural implications, communication theories to artistic approaches were discussed from 9 am to 6 pm.

A part of this was a session by Yoshifumi Kitamura on Designing Interactive Content. He started off with explaining how the space around us is becoming more intelligent, reactive and aware of our actions, conditions and intentions. He gave examples of the AC with sensors that detect where the subjects are, and swing the air in that direction, and the TV screen which moves in the direction of the eye of the subject.

He then asked the audience to imagine the space 10 years from then…and the scenario would be:

  • A wall which changes its colour/texture according to a person’s physical condition, task, and other contents
  • A table formed from wall or floor at a favourite place
  • A monitor of a person’s physical condition, task engagement
  • A window which can be used as a display
  • Tele-communication using a hologram

Yoshifumi Kitamura explaining dynamic aware Photoshop

These are dynamic aware interiors which are more active, enjoyable, efficient and comfortable. Verbal and/or nonverbal behaviours are sensed through motion, bio-information and brain waves. The space, interaction and information is used to create the design of the interiors.

He demonstrated dynamic aware Photoshop which sorts pictures very flexibly. Giving an example, Kitamura gathered photographs from famous places around the world on one screen- The Leaning Tower of Pisa, San Francisco bridge etc. Using metadata, Photoshop arranged all the pictures of the respective places on the world map.

Coming to Impact of Shape of Tables, Kitamura said, “In interiors, shape of table can be changed from round to square to rectangle. The location of the table can be changed according to human activity.” He displayed videos showing the same, as well as how multiple tables can be used to set various choices.

Kitamura highlighted the importance of explicit interaction – gesture based control – and implicit interaction – content based control. “By using environment and virtual space, you can change the depth of the room’s wall according to mood or work.”

He concluded with demonstrating a video of Light Tracer- a VR adventure game in which one has to navigate a princess by casting a ray of light that the character follows.

With the help of videos and images, Kitamura gave a glimpse of the vast, vast possibilities of AI in dynamic aware interiors, opening new windows to the applications of AI in VR and AR.
