‘Blade Runner 2049’ review: Runs, but never flies

Director Denis Villeneuve once caught everyone on a hop with his sci-fi thriller Blade Runner in 1982, for it’s futuristic settings and special effects were truly spell binding. The movie however, found itself at the short end of a stick due to a wafer-thin plot and its meandering pace.

Fast forward by 35 years, and the case is very much the same.

Villeneuve returns to his Blade Runner saga with a sequel that is now set in a dystopic 2049, with Ryan Gosling as Officer K, taking over the blade runner mantle of Los Angeles Police Department from Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who’s been missing following the events in 2019.

Although the movie flies out of the blocks with Gosling giving a glimpse of his new role in a brutal altercation with Sapper Morton, played by Dave Bautista, all the fizz soon fizzles out.

Our protagonist then sets out on a journey to find the lost Rick, and that’s when the movie recedes into the abyss of ennui, as Gosling’s pursuit increasingly seems implausible and leaves you more perplexed than a box of Trivial Pursuit.

However, just like its prequel, its the lavish VFX that takes the driver’s seat here.

Credits to Double Negative, MPC, Framestore, and Rodeo FX, the visual treat never fails to take you by delight. Virtually every scene reeks of heavy visual effects. Right from the futuristic settings of 2049 to the swanky vehicles of the LAPD officers; from Jared Leto’s (playing the beastly-eyed Niander Wallace) kingsly hideout to the dystopian, dusty half of LA, everything’s a pristine VFX craft book that you cannot help but marvel at.

It’s as if the makers went all hammer and tongs in the ambition of leveling up the visual extravaganza that the 1982 flick provided with. And suffice to say, they’ve resoundingly succeeded on that count.

A special mention to cinematography by the veteran Roger Daekins, who even at 68, hasn’t failed to deliver by any accounts and continues to amuse all and sundry.

Blade Runner 2049 is a deftly maneuvered ploy, harnessing every emotion and circumstances to ennobling quality. Its the dearth of soul in the story coupled with its dawdling pace that spoils your viewing. Although Gosling, who appears in almost every frame of the movie, as well as the rest of the supporting cast do an admirable job, the movie never takes off despite promising in fits and starts.

Every time Gosling ventures into the dark and dusky outing, there’s a simmering tension, but one that never completely boils over. The sense of anticipation of something truly magnificent transpiring always leads to a disappointing, damp squib.

Director Villeneuve deserves all the credit for his impeccable showpiece of visual enchantment, but forgets to inject a sparkle that would’ve light up the experience.

Watch it only for two hours and 43 minutes of non-stop VFX exhibition.

A Warner Bros. Pictures distribution, Blade Runner 2049 releases in India on 6 October 2017.

FICCI Knowledge Series 2017 : Digital content specialists outline building blocks for digital transformation

On October 4, 2017, senior executives from India’s motion picture, television and digital industries concluded that a digital first and innovation focused mindset, integration across organisational DNA, data analytics, data protection and IP security are the key pillars of successful digital transformation.

The 2017 Fast Track India: Digital Building Blocks, a Knowledge Series forum by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (FICCI) in association with the Los Angeles India Film Council (LAIFC), supported by the Centre for Content Promotion (CCP), focused on the evolution of content strategies from creation to monetisation, the need for organisations to have a digital DNA in order to remain relevant today, the impact of evolving digital infrastructure on content consumption patterns and the rise of online piracy – threats and remedies.

The forum and networking occasion was held at The Club, Andheri (W), Mumbai.Welcoming the dignitaries and delegates, Dr. Ashish Kulkarni, Chairman, FICCI Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics Forum said, “This Knowledge Series has become a significant platform to discuss issues and share knowledge related to the digital media”.

Digital revolution continues to gain significance in every sector of India. The media and entertainment sector has evolved rapidly over the last year with the emergence of new digital technologies and content distribution models. The FICCI LAIFC KPMG report entitled The Digital journey – How OTT platforms can remain ‘on demand ready’ launched at the event highlighted that, the era of on-demand content has reached a tipping point with consumption becoming on-demand across mobile screens and going ‘mass’ – particularly on the back of pan India 4G roll outs by telecom operators. OTT consumers continue to demand seamless access to services, compelling stories and value for money.  The four pillars of digital transformation outlined in the report comprise a holistic approach including; clearly defining the organisation’s digital vision and strategy, thorough understanding of the customer proposition, accurately assessing the business design and, lastly, carefully designing the execution plan.

Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, India in his keynote address highlighted the need for M&E businesses to be future ready. “Digital transformation of the M&E industry is unstoppable and companies will need to focus on innovation and disruption! It will be important to get the digital building blocks to fall into place – be it in content creation, or getting the right business model to fall into place.”

At the inaugural, Girish Menon, Co-Head, media and entertainment, KPMG in India said, OTT consumption in India has reached a tipping point, with the 4G rollout and related data wars which have resulted in a dramatic and rapid growth in internet penetration and video consumption.  This has also fundamentally altered the consumption demographics and patterns, with OTT viewership becoming more mass.  Organisations can no longer afford to take baby steps and will need to wholeheartedly commit to building out their digital businesses.  However, pivoting to a digital business requires a change in organisational DNA and a ‘digital first’ mindset.  Building a digital business is an evolving process and organisations would need to adopt a systematic approach balancing scalability and flexibility with speed to market and customer centricity.”

On building a robust enforcement model to protect content in a digital economy, Stephen Jenner, VP Communications Asia Pacific, MPA, said, “Around the globe, close collaborations between multiple stakeholders have lead to a number of successful content protection initiatives. This bodes well for growing digital economies, and the many creative people contributing to media and entertainment in those markets.”

Speaking about the roadmap to become a digital company, Nachiket Pantvaidya, CEO, ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. said, “Watching videos on internet, especially shows is slowly becoming an integral part of every Indian’s life – Thanks to quality internet being offered by Telco’s at affordable prices. We, at ALTBalaji, believe that this trend can be effectively monetised by offering multi targeted, exclusive, original Indian content at a never before seen scale.”

During the second panel on digital infrastructure transforming content consumption, Jamie Kenney, Business Head, BARC said “India’s digital ecosystem is more advertising driven. As infrastructure grows, digital content consumption will grow and that makes measuring this landscape important. Currently everyone is speaking a different language when it comes to defining measurement. BARC India’s Ekam measurement will provide consistency and comparability to advertisers and publishers. Like in television, our transparent cross platform measurement will help the industry grow and show true ROI.”

Saurabh Doshi, Head – Media Partnerships, Facebook, said, “Being passionate or even finicky about user experience is the key to building a successful digital platform. In this age of hyper competition, it is imperative to focus on building a strong brand that is differentiated. With over 200 million people in India every month and millions globally on the platform we think deeply on the best user experience we can provide and instant articles, LIVE etc. are such examples.”

Blaise Fernandes, President and CEO, The Indian Music Industry, said, “Digital India is attracting a lot of investments in content creation and distribution over the various digital platforms. This sets off  a multiplier effect, employment generation, tax revenues, soft power. While all this happens it is necessary for protection measures to be in place, glad that FICCI and the LA India Film Council are giving copyright protection in the internet age adequate weightage in their various forums.”

According to Gaurav Gandhi, COO, Viacom 18 Digital Ventures, “The transition into the new era where there is big focus in building direct to consumer digital businesses, one can derive substantially better results if one uses the power and the collaboration of the entire organisation – particularly the established broadcast businesses. Successful businesses will be built when both units (digital and broadcast) synergistically operate and when one ensures participation of maximum number of people in the organisation in this digital journey.”

Other eminent speakers at the Fast Track India forum included Ajay Chacko, Co-founder, Arre, Akash Banerji, Voot, Hiren Gada, Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd. Aamod Gupte, Eros International, Anju Jain, Disney India, Thomas George, Viacom 18, Rajkumar Akella, Rentrak, Tuhin Menon, Culture Machine, and Sagar Gokhale, Qyuki Digital Media.

Russia Content Revolution to shake up MIPCOM 2017

A century after the October Revolution in Russia, the Russian Content Revolution is taking place and will be in the spotlight at MIPCOM 2017.  World premiere screenings, a series of international screenings, conferences and networking opportunities will bring fresh high-end content from Russia to the attention of global TV industry.

“This autumn marks the hundredth anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Two of its protagonists were Lenin and Trotsky. Channel One will showcase on this occasion the docu-drama about Lenin based on previously-unseen archives, while Trotsky will be presented to audiences as the hero of a drama series,” said Channel One Russia CEO and “Trotsky” series producer Konstantin Ernst.

The world premiere screening of “Trotsky”, presented by Channel One and Sreda Production, will be the flagship event of the Russian Content Revolution showcase. Its creators hope the series will be an international hit due to its high production values, compelling script, and its complex lead character.

“Leon Trotsky was the real mastermind and executive of the October upheaval, virtually its producer. He is an international star of the last 100 years, a real pop-icon, a man of great achievements, who met a tragic fate. Our series is the first drama dedicated to Trotsky in the history of Russia, so we hope to rouse both Russian and international audiences’ interest in this project,” added Ernst.

Konstantin Ernst will attend the event to present the project, along with Sreda Production general producer and the series producer Alexander Tsekalo, and its main stars, Konstantin Khabensky, who plays Trotsky, and Olga Sutulova.

The world premiere of “Trotsky” will be supported by the Russian Export Centre that is organising the MADE IN RUSSIA national pavilion at MIPCOM, which will mostly host animation companies but also a number of series producers, including Sreda, Sputnik Vostok Production, and Red Carpet Studio.

“Russian content producers are already well-known for the high quality of their product and Russian studios have gained a strong reputation in foreign markets. Media content producers and production studios are being supported by the Russian Export Centre as part of our ongoing efforts to promote digital content exports,” said Russian Export Centre CEO Pyotr Fradkov.

NTV Broadcasting Company will have a showcase of its fresh content at MIPCOM that includes a special event at the opening gala and an international screening of “The Road to Calvary “.

An adaptation of Aleksey Tolstoy’s novel, it tells the story of two sisters through the tragic times of 1914–1919 encompassing World War I, the Russian Revolution, and civil war. Two young stars of Russian TV and cinema, Anna Chipovskaya and Yulia Snigir, who play the two sisters, will present the project on stage along with NTV Channel general producer Timur Weinstein.

NTV Broadcasting Company will also present the channel and its new line-up at the MIPCOM opening party that will take place on 16 October 2017. The special event for the channel’s international partners and friends will highlight original TV formats from NTV and a range of its latest drama series, which are already acquired by major global distributors, such as Dori Media and Armoza Formats.

TV3 Channel will present a unique case in the mystery thriller “Gogol”- a drama series with extremely successful theatrical release before its premiere on TV and elsewhere. The series features Nikolai Gogol, the great Russian nineteenth century dramatist, who finds himself in the ghastly world of fairy tales from his native Ukraine. The first two episodes, combined as a full-length film, were released in cinemas at the end of August and paid off over the first weekend. One of the most expensive projects on Russian TV, “Gogol” topped the Russian box-office for over a month, and the rest of the episodes will follow in several weeks.

The creators and producers of the series, as well as the actresses Yulia Franz and Taisiia Vilkova, will present one episode, followed by a discussion on the revolutionary monetisation model employed by the “Gogol” project.

More output from leading Russian companies will be presented at the Russian Drama Showcase.  Amedia Production and Mars Media Entertainment will show the new historical drama “Golden Horde” set in ancient Russia of the late thirteenth century. All Media, the official distributor of Yellow, Black and White, will screen two fresh projects, a sci-fi series “Better Than Us”, about the world where humans co-exist with robots, and a new drama, “Cleaned Up”, about ex-drug addicts’ paths to a new life.

The international industry will not only have a chance to see fresh content from Russia, but also meet the top producers behind it. A special high-level networking event, Meet the Russian Producers, is an invitation-only session where key international decision-makers will meet with established Russian drama producers to shape the future of global content partnerships. On the Russian side, key professionals from Sreda Production, CTC Media, Art Pictures, Star Media, and Sputnik Vostok Production will attend the session.

The Russian Content Revolution also concerns the animation sector. Fresh Russian Animation Screening at MIPJunior will feature a range of recent Russian projects for kids, including new projects from Riki Group, Wizart, Melnitsa, CTC and other key industry players. The MIPJunior showcase is presented by the Russian Export Centre.

“We have successfully launched a marketing and advertising programme to promote and support Russian animation producers. The first step as we see it is to set up national pavilions at key international fairs and exhibitions. MIPJunior and MIPCOM are among the must-take-part events for digital content producers,” noted Petr Fradkov of the Russian Export Centre.

MIPJunior will also host a world premiere TV screening of the kids’ fantasy series “Heroes of Envell”, produced by Digital Television Russia and distributed by Signal Media. Produced by the Parovoz animation studio, “Heroes of Envell” (26 x 11’) starts in school, where four promising pupils at junior high find a laptop containing a mysterious game, which turns out to be a portal to the game world with real adventures and dangers.

“There is no doubt the Russian production sector is undergoing an upheaval, with major international buyers such as Netflix, Fox TV Studios and Hulu all buying content from Russia of late. So it is timely for the international marketplace to take a closer look at the innovative drama and animation programming being produced there, to see why the country is now a serious player on the international stage,” said Reed MIDEM director of television and organiser of MIPCOM Laurine Garaude.

MIP Junior takes place in the JW Marriott hotel, Cannes on 14 to 15 October 2017. MIPCOM takes place in the Palais des Festivals, Cannes from 16 to 19 October 2017.
