Licensed products of ‘Beyblade Burst’ are a hit in the German market!

Beyblade Burst is quite a rage in the German market now! Surprised? The animated series premiered on Nickelodeon in Germany on 22 July, 2017. Usually the licensed products have to wait for some time but within a short period the makers have released their licensed products. Consumer interest is growing rapidly throughout the German marketplace, as licensed Beyblade Burst products have already been introduced at retail and are being swept up off the shelves.

Sunrights, the NewYork city based entertainment rights management company announced that it will be airing the show on Saturdays in the coveted 11:10  a.m. time slot.

Sunrights MD Kaz Soeda said, “Germany is a priority market for any program expanding its reach in Europe. The association with Nickelodeon and the incredible retail support we’ve seen to date ensure  Beyblade Burst of a spectacular premiere and opens the door for more licensing and merchandising opportunities for the brand in German speaking markets.”

The new animated series created by d-rights inc. and produced by OLM, introduces viewers to Valt Aoi, who is crazy about Beyblade, the phenomenally popular spinning top that has been fueling competitions from schoolyards to global tournaments for nearly a decade.

Valt’s best friend since childhood, Shu Kurenai, is hailed as a Beyblade prodigy and has already been named as one of the National Beyblade Tournament’s Supreme Four. Inspired by Shu’s accomplishments, Valt sets his sights on reaching this year’s national tournament. But to get to the big leagues, he must first emerge victorious from the district tournament – no easy feat, given the tough opponents standing in his way.

Determined to win, Valt aims to make it to the championship, where he hopes to battle Shu and move on to the national tournament. As he battles, Valt broadens his circle of friends and reaches new heights. Without even realizing it, he has begun to dream of becoming the best Blader in the world.

The Beyblade Burst product line from Hasbro features a dynamic “burst” component, bringing more excitement to the successful battling play pattern. Fans can elevate their physical play to a digital playing field by scanning their Beyblade Burst tops into the Beyblade Burst app (available in the App Store and Google Play) allowing them to customize and battle with their collection digitally with friends through local Wi-Fi.

Framestore creates action packed ‘Destiny 2’ trailer

For the upcoming release of Destiny 2, Activision has teamed up with creative agency 72andSunny, production and direction from RSA Films and visual effects from Framestore to launch its first live action trailer titled ‘New Legends Will Rise’.

Scripted and strategised by ad agency 72andSunny, Framestore created the visually intricate trailer, mixing live-action with cinematic CG and visual effects, based on the characters and worlds created by Bungie.

In Destiny 2‘s heroic live-action two minute trailer, Cayde-6 rallies three Guardians (‘Do it for the puppies!’) into a battle to defend Earth against the evil invading Red Legion, all set to Sabotage by Beastie Boys.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is a first-person action game and the evolution of its award winning, internationally acclaimed predecessor, Destiny.

In Destiny 2, humanity has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, Guardians must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.

The live action trailer connects today’s world with the Destiny 2 universe, by having the audience imagine themselves in a situation like the Guardians’ own experience.

Environment Extensions

The project was a huge undertaking led by Framestore’s Los Angeles facility. In addition to some background replacements for the live-action scenes, the visual effects artists worked with Bungie to produce digital doubles, full CG characters, environments and compositional elements like explosions as well as lots of particle and destruction work.

In the opening scene where Cayde-6 rallies his three guardians Titan, Hunter and Warlock, Framestore created a street aesthetic to sure a futuristic dystopia with a combination of neon signs and ruined architecture using a 2.5D matte painting projection technique. The team extended the entire street scene to add depth and the caged Traveler in the background with red accents to showcase the enemies’ master plan at work. In the background it detailed additional battle space ships, explosions and atmospheric considerations like smoke, embers and ash using a combination of Nuke, Maya and Houdini renders.

Space scenes were completed by Framestore’s New York facility including the intro sequence and a fully CG space environment where the new villain of Destiny 2 Dominus Ghaul is detailed whilst his ships descends into action.

Weapons and Effects

As fans will know each gun in Bungie’s Destiny produces unique flares and qualities such as the new Wardcliff Coil rocket launcher, which produced drunken missile flare. Framestore also converted the original 3D assets from Bungie into high resolution CG characters and weapons for the cinematic film. Environment effects like ash and embers add depth and atmosphere.

CG weapons, effects and volumetric muzzle flash libraries for each gun were created to correlate with the game character’s weapons of choice, including a fully CG Psion character and gun. Framestore designed CG versions of Hunter’s staff, Warlock’s sword, Titan’s shield and a fiery sword at the end. During the live action production these weapons were represented by LED lights with specific colours. This ensured accurate interactive lighting and reflections during the shoot to facilitate the integration of the CG weapons in post-production. Other weapon effects included CG lasers and speakers in addition to the continual aesthetic of smoke and embers.

“My favourite sequence is the backlit melée,” says Framestore creative director Alex Thomas. “I love the coherence of the sequence, with action taking place across multiple floors, linked by characters across these divides. But in particular I love the silhouettes against the LED screen.”

CG Villains and Digital Doubles of Guardians

Framestore created digital doubles of the Guardians Titan, Hunter and Warlock based on motion capture. In concert with Bungie, the villains and quadruped beasts were drafted from Destiny 2’s 3D assets. Framestore married two live action plates for another complex sequence that included a digital breakthrough moment for Titan.

Framestore’s creative solutions included the crafting of new pipeline and plugin tools specifically for Nuke software to deliver the cinematic quality lens effects needed for this film. There was a high emphasis on creating and reproducing the optical and photographic qualities of anamorphic lenses during the shoot. As digital cameras become more and more perfect, film-makers are looking for VFX and old, vintage lenses to add character, imperfections and charisma to their images.

The colour grade was completed in-house at the Los Angeles office as well, colourist Jonah Braun created a unique and distinctive look under Beau Leon’s supervision and the director’s eye.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Live Action

To produce the theatrical live-action trailer, Bungie, Activision and 72andSunny enlisted Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Framestore’s VFX team. Vogt-Roberts who has worked in comedy, dramas and action-packed blockbusters, purposefully approached the production as a feature film which was shot in his hometown of Detroit.

RSA Films and Framestore captured LIDAR scans on set during the live-action production giving Framestore the ability to scale accurately and know exactly where to cast elements within the frame.

Roberts framed live-action plates to consider the significant amount of visual effects and CG overlays that would be included within the film. Framestore completed 75 complex shots and hand animating chase scenes.

On working with Framestore, Vogt-Roberts says, “The dedication from every member of their team spoke volumes about their commitment and professionalism. All of this is made even more impressive by how quickly they turned around all of these shots and helped me realise the vibrant world of Destiny 2.”

Why kids are enamoured by these adorable characters from BabyRiki

The first word that comes out of your mouth when you look at these round little adorable characters is “Awww!” And their names are equally cute too. Meet Krashy, Chichi, Rosy, Wally and Pandy, the five colourful characters of Fun Union’s digital series BabyRiki.

Since the launch of this pre-school show on Russia’s YouTube, it has taken the digital platform by storm, gathering 500 million views in a span of only 10 months.

BabyRiki is an animated show with content that covers all aspects of a child’s life- from physical well-being to cognitive and soft skills. The concept of the show revolves around the toys that have come to life in children’s bedroom.

‘BabyRiki’ characters Wally and Rosy

BabyRiki focuses on building social and emotional skills through the four C’s: Communication, Creativity, Cooperation and Critical thinking. “The educational aspect of the series revolves around telling children a story which introduces them to concepts that are new to them, using age-appropriate content,” says Fun Union CEO Christine Brendle, who was previously an entrepreneur developing Kids Dailies- a digital learning platform for children. “These concepts may include material objects, their properties and behaviour, elementary knowledge of space, time or the surrounding world, ethical notions, et cetera.”

Fun Union CEO Christine Brendle

The narrative in the episodes unfolds rhythmically, slowly and in familiar surroundings which children can comprehend. “The subject matter is quite simple and based on situations that children can relate to: eating, outdoor play, games, sleeping and daily routines,” explains Brendle.

One reason for the massive success of the show is its development alongside child psychologists and early development specialists- people who exactly know what appeals to kids, what is relevant to them and what they should be aware of ideally. Brendle mentions, “We wanted to ensure that the content in our show was appropriate for the ages while remaining entertaining. So, we worked with the experts to define the curriculum in each episode.”

Apart from their lessons that focus on learning colours, shapes, sizes and so on, pre-schoolers acquire skills like sorting, rhyming, basic counting, recognition of words and letters through BabyRiki.

BabyRiki episodes are a combination of live-action and 3D animation. “Montessori and many educators after her, have shown that children learn best when they see real life objects and can at the same time name them, see them and hear sounds associated to them,” highlights Brendle, who is of the opinion that concepts are easily retained in the child’s mind when vocabulary is combined with singing and movement.

‘BabyRiki’ characters Chichi and Krashy

KikoRiki and Pincode – Fun Union’s other major brands – focussed on primary school kids. “It was only natural that we extended to pre-school which as a segment has been very vibrant for the past few years,” adds Brendle. “We also wanted to leverage the musical talents of Petersburg Animation Studio and kinesthetic learning works particularly well for pre-school.”

BabyRiki follows the huge success of KikoRiki in Russia. With over 99 per cent brand awareness in the country, the creators felt the need to build on that image while targeting a younger crowd, adding a strong educational focus with cute musical stories.

Positive response from pre-schoolers in Russia prompted Fun Union to launch across major digital platforms in China (Tencent Video, iQiyi, Youku, Mango TV and Beva). Between just 8 and 26 July, the show has amassed over 65 million views.

Second season of  has been completed and the third will introduce more tweaks to the five characters’ universe. As Fun Union holds the rights to BabyRiki (as well as KikoRiki and PinCode), its goal is to continue promoting and distributing the series across Asia and the world.

And why just kids? Teens and adults alike will welcome these lovely and delightful characters with open arms!

‘Baadshaho’ review: Where style supercedes substance

Just when you thought you’ve had enough sifting through the unalloyed dross that Bollywood has been dishing out throughout the year, in comes Baadshaho. Director Milan Luthria tries to pepper it with a patina of wisecracks, or even an apophthegm such as “Jab maut samne ho, toh zindagi ki keemat pata chalti hai” and so on. Yet, a puny story coupled with some insipid on-screen performance easily outweighs them all.

Luthria returns to his old stomping ground (after a four year hiatus) of period drama based on crime and thievery with his latest outing. Barely a quarter of an hour into the movie, and you can effortlessly fathom where this is heading. Ileana D’Cruz raises the curtains as she is introduced as Rani Gitanjali of Rajasthan, and how the 1973 case of ‘Emergency’ lands her behind the bars.

Frantic about the confiscation of her gold possessions, she turns to Bhawani Singh essayed by Ajay Devgn, to safeguard it. And even before you could say ‘Jack Robinson’, the two are swapping saliva on the terraces of the former’s royal palace! Well, that escalated quickly.

Baadshaho has all the style and flair to whip up a taut drama reminiscent of the 70s, but where it terribly falls short is a concrete storyline to tread on. The age-old narrative of a heist carried out by a group of spoilt-brats on a truck laced with heaps of gold feels predictable to the point of exhaustion.

Having limped for nearly two hours and thirty minutes, it then comes to an annoyingly contrived climax.

Director Milan Luthria (centre) with Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’Cruz on the sets of ‘Baadshaho’

The dusty, Rajasthani-colour of the movie is simply a treat to the eyes, though. The enchanting sand-dunes of Jodhpur and visual effects are excellently crafted, courtesy NY VFXWAALA who score full brownie points there. The scenes of one part of the palace blowing up early on, along with the landmines during an altercation in the climax are VFX-heavy. However, the effects are nigh perfect when they produce droplets of gold.

Also, the penultimate scene of the movie where Ileana’s character drowns under a deluge of sand is just eye-catching!

But Baadshaho, despite boasting a star cast, is further bruised by some poor performances from the leading ladies. Whilst Ileana is criminally underutilized, she’s a let-down even in her scant appearances on the screen. Esha Gupta on the other hand, is roped in only to add gloss to the celluloid.

Besides Ajay’s terrific depiction as a rough-yet-honest hoodlum, another point of mention is the cheeky banters between Emraan Hashmi (as Dalia) and Sanjai Mishra (as Tikla). They don’t fail to tickle your funny bones and provide some reprieve. Vidyut Jammwal is worth noticing too.

Milan Luthria has given us gems in the form of Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and The Dirty Picture in the past, but this one is streets away from matching their calibre. And the makers have themselves to blame for its undoing.

In a year that has produced nothing but disappointment for the film industry, Baadshaho joins the conveyor belt of big-budget duds.
