Three Indian commercials which used VFX in a large scale

VFX is no longer limited to just big budgeted films in India. It has graduated slowly and steadily towards the advertisement sector in India as well.It enables in creating innovative advertisements .VFX is today helping the brands to create ads on a grandeur scale to break the monotony among the clutter of ads in didgital space as well on TV.This has no doubt increased the visual appeal as well as retention power of the ad films. We take a look at some of the ads shot within few years in India which were VFX heavy.

Ching’s secret an Indian brand of Chinese cuisine ingredients made a TV commercial “Ranveer Ching returns”  in 2016. The ad was claimed to be the most expensive ad film ever made with an advertising budget of  INR 750 million, similar to that of a mid size hindi film. The ad was directed by renowned filmmaker Rohit Shetty and showed a dystopian future where the lead actor rides a chariot into an arena to combat hunger and save the people from starvation. Supported by YRF the 5 minute ad registered more than 6 million views on YouTube alone upon its release. NY VFXWAALA was responsible for creating the dystopian city.

According to Ashish Patil, vice-president, Yash Raj Films,  the original script was written as a mythological thriller in “Bahubali” style by YRF, but turned out in its current avatar due to the unavailability of horses! That is when the cars and bikes flew in (literally). NY VFXWAALA, a division of Ajay Devgn Films, worked on creating the dystopian city. The film was shot at Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad, in just four days.

VFX shots were used in creating the city, the giant vehicle on which Ranveer comes, the pan throwing scene where Ranveer and Tamannah throw the burning pan, fight sequences, hurling of vehicles etc. No doubt, the VFX shots helped in making the advertisement a huge sensation.

Ambuja cement—In 2015, Ambuja cement ran an ad campaign featuring The Great Khali, a popular wrestler. The TV commercial shows the difficulties faced by the wrestler due to size and strength while he tries to live a normal life in a house. Eventually, Ambuja cement  helps the wrestler by providing him with a strong home. The ad used VFX extensively which was done by Metropolitana a VFX studio based in Spain. VFX shots have been taken where Khali falls down, breaks the wall shots. It was an innovative ad that became successful due to the VFX shots.

CocaCola—In 2017, Coca Cola introduced an Indian rendition  of its global Brotherly Love Ad campaign in the form of a TV commercial. The concept of the film was laid by Mc Cann Worldgroup India, while Purple Vishnu Films  did the production. Prime Focus did the online grading services for the ad film.

With success of VFX in such advertisements, no doubt there are possibilities of more such ads in future. There might be a bigger Ranveer Ching or a Bahubali based ad or who knows what visual magic we might get to see in future.

Reviewing ‘Circuit Therapy’- One evil world, two wise robots

A latest in the series of numerous, innovative comic releases, ‘Circuit Therapy’ by Rahul Bhandare brings you a gripping tale of two robots and their tryst with destiny.

Unlike most other conventional comic series, this one also reflects on the common travails which humans can normally associate with, whilst also bringing to light some important virtues which must be incorporated in our real world.

A still from a chapter in Circuit Therapy

Without any further ado, let’s delve into the synopsis of Circuit Therapy:

Some four thousand years into the future, the story unfolds on the planet of Dhilla Minor. The robot At-1 is brought into a therapy centre and is about to be terminated. But with his vast storage of human memories, At-1 manages to escape. He knows not why he has these error signals in his unit. Yet he hopes that the Rogue Robot will have some answers.

On this quest to find the Rogue Robot, At-1 is soon joined by Bangdu – A robot who stores information about all of music and cinema. Together they begin their new and strange adventure.

Yet unknown to them a team of 2 other robots wants to stop them from meeting the Rogue. They try to separate At-1 and Bangdu in a mysterious cave.

At-1 is trapped in a chamber where time moves faster than it does on the outside. 1 minute on the outside can be as much as 50 years inside the chamber. Bangdu on the other hand has to somehow escape from a robot sniper who can track Bangdu’s every move even before he makes it.

But somehow At-1 and Bangdu escape. One of their enemies on the other hand is attacked by another evil robot – Kilver. The Rogue finds out about Kilver’s attack and contacts At-1 and Bangdu. He gives them the challenge of scratching a dragon’s butt in order to learn the secret of their worries.

After completing the challenge and understanding the secret, At-1 and Bangdu come to understand that a human soul can be transferred into a robot. And Kilver is trying to raise his own immortal army by transferring millions of human souls into many robots.

Somehow At-1 and Bangdu manage to stop Kilver. They give Kilver a new life by putting his soul into a new robot’s body. Together the three of them now begin a new life of exploration.

Circuit Therapy: The Review

Set across 13 different chapters, the Circuit Therapy not only talks about the different things that define the human existence, but also deals with some real-life plights and predicaments faced by us.

The chapter ‘Bridge ki Baat’ talks about how we really wish love would last forever, but sometimes the more stress we put on love/relationships, the more fragile they turn out to be, whereas ‘The Time Tap / The Time Trap’ explores how we experience time very differently according to what state of mind we are in.

‘The Dragon’s Butt’ on the other hand, discusses how we can still choose to solve issues by just talking to each other instead of resorting to violence.

Towards the end of the 13-part story, the main villain – Kilver, may have been defeated, but the important point is that the evil in him was laid to rest. The egoistic and controlling Kilver, became the curious and fun-loving Kulfi.

In a simple illustrative style and with some humour, Circuit Therapy portrays the problems faced by 2 robots. And through them, it presents a picture of our own complicated human lives.

Google Doodle celebrates 140 years of Wimbledon with a guest appearance by Rufus the Hawk

As the Wimbledon 2017 championship kicks off from 3 July 2017, Google celebrates the one hundred and fortieth year of this oldest tennis tournament with its new Doodle created by Gerben Steenks.

The Doodle features a green background which resembles the grass courts on which Wimbledon matches are played. Two animated tennis rackets have a round while all the letters of the word Google – except for the letter L which serves as the umpire – make up the spectators cheering for the players. The grass on the Wimbledon courts is cut to a height of 8mm since 1995, which according to expert research is optimum for present day play and survival.

Google has also taken care of the “endearing quirks” associated with Wimbledon like placing Rufus at the top right corner of the Doodle. Rufus is a Harris Hawk trained by Imogen Davis of Avian Control. It visits the Club most weeks in the year to provide a deterrent to local pigeons by making aware of a predator in the grounds to persuade them to roost elsewhere. It flies for one hour on most mornings of The Championships before the gates open.

Earlier concepts of the Doodle for this year’s Wimbledon are also showcased:

This concept shows just how fickle Wimbledon weather can be.

This idea captures the back-and-forth volley of spectators’ attentive eyes.

“To many fans and players, Wimbledon is tennis,” Google says. “Good luck to this year’s competitors!”

Trailer breakdown of ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’

Over twenty years after the events of Robin Williams and co. in the adventurous board game of Jumanji, comes yet another fascinating flick based on the same game, though with its chops and changes.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a stand-alone sequel to the 1995 cult, and as we could see in the trailer, promises to be bigger and better.

Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillen and Jack Black in Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle

If we analyse the trailer, then one can find out that whilst the spirit of the original movie is retained with all the chase and high-octane action sequences, Jumanji 2 rings a few changes. Unlike the board game we saw earlier, here the protagonists enter Jumanji’s fantasy world through a video game and impersonate the characters that they would select at the start of it.

Starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart among others, the movie is also set for a unique twist towards the end of it, as stated by its director Jake Kasdan.

A movie of its stature will naturally involve lots of visual effects, but Jumanji 2 seems a cut above. A hoard of rhinos chasing the quartet, the elegant forest settings, the jump sequences every VFX scene in the movie reeks of sheer class, courtesy to MPC, Iloura and Ollin VFX, the brains behind all of this.

The Jumanji franchise, which includes the book, the original movie and TV series is a grand success among the fans but looks like the Dwayne Johnson-starrer will take it a notch further. Set to hit the screens on 20 December this year, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has already created a furore among the fans with its titillating teaser and star cast.

The ABCD of a career in the VFX industry

The visual effects (VFX) industry has come a long way in India and is growing steadily while providing a new dimension to film production. During 2016, many big-budget blockbusters such as Sultan, Dangal, Fan and M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story did well at the box office. The VFX industry is thus growing at a steady and unprecedented pace, according to industry experts.

The VFX industry provides services to advertising, television, and feature film productions. The year 2017 appears to be an all-time high for the animation and visual effects industry as big-budget, effects-laden films continue to dominate the theatrical motion picture release schedules.

In film-making, VFX is the process by which imagery is created or manipulated outside the context of a live action shot. It involves the integration of a live-action footage and computer-generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would otherwise be dangerous, expensive, or impossible to capture on film.

‘Doctor Strange’ concept art

VFX involves multiple tasks and consists of compositors, concept artists, digital artists, layout artists, lighting technical director, match move artists, matte painters, producers, roto artists, runners, technical director, supervisors. The following are few roles in the VFX career:

Concept Artists

At the pre-production level concept artists produce art work or illustrations based on the brief given by a client or VFX supervisor. They work on illustrations throughout the shoot and may often be required to improvise their original ideas as the filming progresses. Creating new characters or unseen worlds help the production designers realise their vision.

BG Prep Artists/Digital Preparation Artists

Background preparation artists are responsible for rig removals, painting out markers or unwanted elements etc. before the VFX shot moves along the production pipeline. Having a good eye for detail helps them to maintain the high quality of repair work.

Roto Artists

Rotoscoping is the initial skill required by compositors. Roto artists mark areas of live action scenes where graphic elements will cover the live images. They create clear mattes within the scene to allow all elements of the scene to be layered smartly. In the case of a static camera in a shot, rotoscoping may include only one frame; however mattes will still be required if the computer-generated imagery interacts with moving people, moving objects or moving background elements, and in these cases mattes would be required for every frame. If the live action is moving, roto shapes are created for the relevant areas of every frame within a shot so that graphics can be combined skillfully with the live action.

‘The Jungle Book’ making

Matchmove Artists

Tracking or matchmoving is also known as the invisible art of visual effects and is the basic most important process to integrate computer graphic elements or animation seamlessly into a live action sequence. In other words matching the virtual or CG camera/world to the live action camera/world. With the help of matchmoving the animators are able to place computer graphic elements in the film that would interact with the real actors or the real world.

Matte Painters

Matte Painters work with stills captured from live action photography, digital still photography, rendered computer graphic elements to create beautiful environments or imaginary worlds which do not exist or are difficult to shoot in reality. They work hand in hand with environment department and the virtual backgrounds are seamlessly integrated into the film by compositors.

Layout Artists

A layout artist is responsible for CG camera animation using cinematography principles, shot composition and character blocking. They work closely with the animation director and storyboard artists and stage every shot and plot the action that takes place within each scene. They also work on setting up the actual frame duration required for a scene. The layout department plays a creative and important role which can be compared to a cinematographer’s team in live film making.

Lighting Artists

A lighting artist’s key role is to maintain consistency in the lighting, colour balance and mood throughout the VFX shot/sequence. They ensure that the computer generated elements look live and photo realistic. They add the lighting that creates atmosphere and adds realism, depth and tone in a scene. The appropriate lighting clarifies location, weather and time of a day without distracting the continuity of the scene. They are also referred to as lighting TDs (technical director).

Composting before-after

Compositors

Compositors work closely with VFX supervisors and 2D supervisors to composite the numerous elements that complete a VFX shot. They receive data from various sources like roto, BG prep and lighting. And using the same they construct the final image by merging all the layers of a shot, including live-action and computer graphic elements. It is necessary for the compositors to have a thorough understanding of the computer-generated animation process consolidated with relevant artistic skills and at the same time maintain the standard as well as the continuity of the project.

Producer

A VFX or animation producer is required to manage all aspects of a project including the initial VFX breakdown and bidding, planning and scheduling of facility resources, managing the creative and production teams and monitoring their work during the post-production process. Liaising with the client throughout the producer also ensures that a project is delivered in a timely manner within the given budget, thus making it profitable.

VFX Supervisor

The VFX supervisor is responsible for achieving the creative aims of the film director through the use of VFX. They are the creative leaders of the teams of artists in the studio, guiding the artists throughout the show ensuring that good and clear communication occurs at all times between the artists, editor and client. During production stage, a VFX supervisor would also spend time on set, ensuring VFX is filmed correctly to allow for a clean edit. The VFX supe handles the project from conception through the completion, seeing to it that the good quality of work is delivered.

To sum up, visual effects industry has a number of roles to perform in film making so as to make imagery shots look real and give special effects to the viewing of a film. Consider the Krrish series which did wonders at the box office mainly due to the visual effects it had offered in viewing. Hence, a career in VFX is certainly promising and rewarding.

Cat Stuck in Brickwork of New Construction

Occurred on June 13, 2017 / Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

“I am building a new house and was checking on some work when I heard a cat meowing. I followed the noise to the walls at the corner of the house. I knew the cat was trapped in the cavity between the house brickwork. I got my drill and started to drill holes in the wall until located the exact location of the cat and where it was able to break free. I then put the video on Facebook hoping to find the owner. After about two hours the owner got word from some friends who saw my video on facebook. He contacted me and I then took the cat to his home where the owner was delighted to have the cat home and thanked me.”
