Convenience Meets Unparalleled Experience with Game of Thrones Season 7 on Hotstar

Hotstar, India’s leading video-on-demand platform, and the exclusive online destination for award-winning HBO content in India, launched the highly anticipated premiere of Game of Thrones season 7 on 17 July. The first episode of the new season was available for audiences to view within minutes of its US telecast, under the Hotstar Premium service.

In response to the burgeoning audience for international content in India, Hotstar has partnered with the world’s largest studios like HBO, Disney and Showtime to bring the most celebrated international movies and shows to India.Game of Thrones is the world’s most avidly watched and anticipated show with immense excitement and conjecture preceding every season premiere. Unfortunately, it is also the most illegally downloaded show in the world, despite the content being legally distributed, globally, by its creators.

Taking a humorous lens to this, Hotstar has launched a bold marketing campaign, intended to upend the behaviour of illegal downloading. Titled ‘Torrents Morghulis’, a play on ‘Valar Morghulis’, as fans of the show will instantly recognize, the theme translates to ‘All Torrents Must Die’.The campaign lightheartedly highlights the trouble people put themselves through for finding and downloading illegal content, and how redundant these pains are in the current day and age where shows are readily available, at the user’s fingertips.

Leading with the promise of  “Minutes after America, hours before Russia”, the campaign takes Torrents head on with 4 TV commercials, an outdoor campaign in key cities, and high impact digital activation. The films features two characters. There is one who still labours through the process of procuring his content illegally, and another, who’s got a Hotstar Premium subscription and is able to enjoy the Game of Thrones experience the way it is meant to be – available to watch with the world, ad-free, unbeeped and unblurred.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series, ‘Game of Thrones’ has run for six extremely acclaimed seasons and holds the record for the highest Emmy wins for any Primetime TV show.  Game of Thrones Season 7 is already available to watch immediately after the US telecast, Monday 17 July onwards, on Hotstar.

‘Dunkirk’ review: Soundtracks have more emotions than anything and anyone else

Whatever happened at Dunkirk may be a part of World War II, but Dunkirk is not just a war film. Rather it is purely based on the event which in history is termed as the Dunkirk Evacuation. The film conveniently sidesteps the political affairs in the German army, the halt order issued by a German High Command and the events that led to the Battle of Dunkirk.

The film begins with a group of British soldiers walking on the streets in Dunkirk when firing begins and they start running. While they are trying to escape, four to five get killed and only one (Fionn Whitehead) manages to escape to the beach of Dunkirk where he sees a humongous fleet of soldiers in multiple massive queues waiting to be rescued.

There are minimal dialogues, considering the emphasis on capturing the panic and helplessness of the soldiers on ground. The film also strays clear of character building as throughout you do not find yourself being attached to any one character. However, the characters fairly play their parts according to the situations they are in and on the whole contribute to a better understanding of the event.

While Mr Dawson (Mark Rylance) and the British Royal Navy Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) show the grit and calm in a tense war situation as comes only with experience, young soldiers on the land are perfect examples of what drives humans to survival. George (Barry Keoghan) and Dawson’s son Collins (Jack Lowden) are the patriotic teenagers who want to save lives while Cillian Murphy plays the soldier who fears his life after he is shaken by the bombings at Dunkirk.

The film is told from three perspectives: land, sea and air with justice done to the cinematography of all the three. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema has done a brilliant work on the camera with aerial shots of the beach lined with soldiers, track shots of the vast expanse of the sea, and toppling and tumbling shots from the British Spitfires’ perspective. All of  these add realism and heightened emotions to the action.

Multiple cuts in the film amount to a remarkable screenplay and editing that has shots dedicatedly capturing the situation and sentiments of various settings in sea, air and among the soldiers on land. While most of the scenes seem to be shot on-location with actual people and vessels (destroyers, pleasure crafts, lifeboats, merchant marine boats), use of visual effects is not completely disregarded. A beautiful shot in the film is the oil leak in sea from Mr Dawson’s pleasure craft that leads to fire as a German fighter-plane hits the water. Dawson’s boat just in time moves away from the explosion and there is a spectacular top shot of fire on the surface of the water. But since most of the movie is shot without the aid of VFX, it cannot be said whether this shot was effects or real.

There is some astounding work done on the soundtracks and praise ends there. The music of the film is the only sensational part of Dunkirk as I found nothing gripping about the story, moments and emotions created. In fact, it is music only that kept me hooked to the story, or rather helped me sit through the film. The portrayal of panic, helplessness, determination and hope didn’t seem to come out as well as the music did.

The movie is a very neutral depiction of the event at Dunkirk with nothing more and nothing less. While people may defend the film by saying that the events are not puffed and are portrayed as they were, one cannot completely overlook the fact that a situation triggered due to an on-going war consists of heightened emotions and increased tension. Considering this, the movie seemed a rather dry depiction of the event.

Dunkirk is weaved well with a decent narration but somehow fails to generate any sort of emotional turmoil or even the excitement and curiosity of a climax.

Final verdict: Dunkirk is a film that you sit, watch and then forget about (as soon as you leave the cinema hall). But if you are a movie-making pedant, there is something great in store for you in the cinematography, screenplay and sound-editing.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, produced by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, Dunkirk is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and hits theatres in India on 21 July, 2017.

Top Bollywood Celebs who dubbed for Animated and live-action characters

Hollywood live action movies and animations have a great fan following in our country. Whilst they are released in multiple languages, the Hindi dubbing of the same have opened up newer avenues for the Bollywood stars.

Now apart from featuring in movies, a growing number of celebrities are going behind the camera to lend their voices. Shahrukh Khan was the harbinger when he voiced for Mr.Incredible in the 2004 epic The Incredibles(Hum hai Lajawaab). Thirteen years on, the dubbing landscape has now become a stomping ground for our movie stars.

Here are a few recent movies (both live action and animated) which featured voices of some renowned artists from Bollywood.

Tiger Shroff – Spiderman: Homecoming

Talking of the recent ones, let’s begin with the homecoming of a webslinger who had been away for far too long.

The third reboot of the franchise was received to a positive response and dubbing the lead Peter Parker in Hindi was Bollywood’s chocolate boy Tiger Shroff. Suffice to say his casting was a masterstroke. The youthful exuberance by Tom Holland in the movie was aptly matched by Shroff’s voice. A youth icon today, Tiger embodies the very essence of representing a hero having himself portrayed one just a year ago.The Flying Jatt star turned a voice artist for the very first time in his short career, and his dubbing debut was off to a flyer.

Irrfan Khan and Priyanka Chopra – The Jungle Book

Mowgli’s adventures were brought to the celluloid in 2016 by Jon Favreau after a gap of almost two decades and sent ripples across the box office history books with its monumental success. In India too, the movie was loved by all and sundry and the Hindi version of it featured voices of Irrfan Khan and Priyanka Chopra for Baloo and Kaa.

Jungle Book couldn’t have found a more fitting Indian version of Kaa than the Baywatch actress, who possesses a similar seductive tone. Irrfan as the comical bear Baloo looks like a mismatch on the face of it, but the 50-year old pulled it off great.

Ali Asgar – Despicable Me 3

The funniest ‘dadi’ on the planet, Ali Asgar opened a new chapter in his illustrious career when he lent his voice for ‘Gru’ and ‘Dru’ in the third instalment of Despicable Me franchise.

The well-known comedian voiced for both the lead characters of the movie which is a testament to his immense talent. Having entertained the masses all these years through his stand-up comedy and also in his granny avatar on Kapil Sharma’s shows, the fans were treated with a new side of him.The movie was a commercial success in India too, and thanks in no small part to our very own “Pushpa nani”.

Arshad Warsi – Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge

Captain Jack Sparrow is more than just a fictional pirate character. He’s an icon. And Johnny Depp’s impeccable portrayal of the crackbrained-yet-humorous sea rover is the reason.

Who wouldn’t love to play Jack Sparrow? Or even voice his character? So Arshad Warsi doing a voice over for him in the Hindi dub of Pirates of the Caribbean franchise’s latest production, Salazar’s Revenge, one can only drool.

The ‘Circuit’ has given us some really cherishable characters in the past which made our stomach churn with laughter. So him donning the Jack Sparrow’s hat, albeit vocally, seems like near perfect. His comic genes made total justice to Depp’s most famous character.

Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Chunky Pandey, Vinay Pathak – Hanuman: Da’ Dumdaar

Enough with Hollywood and their glorification. It’s time to admire some of our own work. In a latest in the string of domestic animated movies, Hanuman: Da’ Damdaar released last month and set the kids rolling in the aisles.

Based on the storied history of Ramayana, the movie emphasizes on the life of one of Lord Ram’s closest devotees. Though the movie is sprinkled with plenty of humor and comes with its own modifications, it endeared to the young audience. The star voice cast only added to the glamour.

From left to right: Vinay Pathak, director Ruchi Narain and Chunky Pandey

Voicing Hanuman was none other than Salman Khan, who brought the character to life with his authoritative vocals. The likes of Raveena Tandon, Chunky Pandey and Vinay Pathak added to the allure of the movie in the voices of Anjani, Tourist Guide and Popat Sharma respectively.Bring in the vocals of Saurabh Shukla, Javed Akhtar, Kunal Khemu and Makarand Deshpande, it makes for a dumdaar cast.
