Sega partners with IDW Publishing for new Sonic comics

Sega has joined forces with IDW Publishing which is the leading publisher of licensed comic books to begin a new chapter in the Blue Blur’s adventures in 2018.

The official press release said that the creative teams are being formed right now. Publishing plan is now underway with more details to come at a later date. It also said that writers and artists will be bringing their talents to the comic book world of Sonic.

“We have been speaking with beloved Sonic fan-favourite creators and new creators alike and are excited to be able to spread specifics about our plans for the comic in the near future,” said IDW chief creative officer Chris Ryall.

Sega confirmed two days ago that it was ending its partnership with Archie Comics which had been publishing Sonic comics for 24 years.

In its announcement on 19 July 2017, Sega said, “This does not mark the end of Sonic in comics, but signifies Sega of America’s decision to take a different direction for the series that will be announced at a later date.”

IDW is known primarily as a publisher of licensed comic book adaptations with current properties including Star Wars, The X-Files, Star Trek, GI Joe, Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

“We are ecstatic about this partnership with IDW,” Sonic the Hedgehog chief brand officer Ivo Gerscovich said. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends, and foes.”

Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog series ran from 22 November 1992 to 19 July 2017, first under the pen of Michael Gallagher, then Ken Penders and eventually Ian Flynn. The comic book series was originally envisioned as not only an adaptation of Sega’s popular action-platformer franchise starring a speedy blue hedgehog but also as an extension of DiC Entertainment’s cartoon adaptation by the same name.

Nazara Games, POKKT and Dettol come together for a native advertising campaign on Chhotta Bheem’s mobile game

Nazara Games and POKKT, the  smartphone ad platform for mobile games have come together to develop a native campaign in Nazara’s most popular game, Chhota Bheem Talking Toy. For this, the brand ‘Dettol’ has been integrated in the game to enhance user experiences and brand visibility. Chhota Bheem the Talking Toy character has been showcased washing his hands at regular intervals thereby creating awareness to stay healthy and protected from germs in keeping with the brand’s core positioning.

In-game branding has become one of the more common marketing gimmick now. Many brands are keen on placing their names or logos inside the games. That way it catches the attention of the players while using the app.

Native advertising gaming has become a preferred choice for brands in the recent times while many studios such as Greedy Games have sprung up who cater to the same needs. A game being a more interactive medium makes for more brand visibility as users are absolutely engrossed in the experience.

Moving along this trend is likely to be seen more often.

Justice League Comic-Con trailer analysis: Teasing the return of Superman!

Justice will be served to all but the new trailer suggests our heroes will have to walk on eggshells first.

Unveiled at the annual San Diego Comic Con international festival, the latest four minute trailer of the upcoming DC magnum opus ‘Justice League’ goes one step ahead of the initial teaser to give more insight into the movie. And hold your breath, it may have just revealed the return of Superman!

Superman to join them?

The trailer opens supposedly to a bank heist which is busted by Wonder Woman, who fights off the challenge of all the thieves single-handedly. With Superman still presumed dead, now it’s all down to her and four others – Batman, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, to go against the might of pantomime Steppenwolf, who too is introduced here.

Played by Ciaran Hinds, the leader of Apokolips descends down on Earth in search of three Mother Boxes, wreaking havoc left, right and centre in the process. The Justice League have a Herculean task at hand, but the trailer suggests they are up for it.

Early on in the video, Aquaman is in Themyscira, home of Diana and her Amazonian race whilst also getting involved in an underwater skirmish. The Dark Knight is seen waltzing down the city, set ablaze by Steppenwolf, whereas Cyborg rides one of the Bat vehicles which leaves Alfred dumbfounded.

Amid all the pandemonium unfolding, Barry Allen aka The Flash injects some mirth into the narratives with his hilarity that are sure to carve out some laughs despite the tense setting.

And did I mention a humongous robotic creature that our protagonists battle with? Well, not much has been shown about it but whatever it is, it certainly spells more trouble.

The action sequences appear on par with DC’s previous films in terms of quality but the thrill it imbues is infectious. Justice League have their plates full as majority of the time they could be seen carrying out their heroic manoeuvres suggesting an intense fight with the antagonists. But towards the end, they will be lent a helping hand by someone we are all waiting for.

Yes, the theory of Superman’s return which I teased earlier. In the dying embers of the trailer, Alfred experiences slight tremors in his underground garage. The startled look he wears on seeing someone makes you think it’s Superman, whilst the words that he utters, “He said you’ll come. Now let’s hope you’re not too late” only adds more fuel to the fire!

It’s bigger, better, darker and the excitement is so palpable.

A Warner Bros. production, Justice League opens in theatres on 17 November 2017.

Ghosts of the Arctic

Ghosts of the Arctic was the type of passion project that my boyhood dreams were made of. Our goal was to venture out into the beautiful frozen expanse of Svalbard, in winter, to search and document polar bears. During the shoot we experienced temperatures that were never warmer than -20ºC and frequently plummeted down as low as -30ºC + wind chill factor. Many days we drove over two hundred kilometres on our snow mobiles in very difficult terrain and conditions as we searched for wildlife. The bumpy terrain left us battered, bruised and sore. We experienced three cases of first and second degree frostbite during the filming as well as a lot of failed equipment and equipment difficulties as a result of the extreme cold. Each day involved 14-16 hours in the field. We had batteries that would loose their charge in mere minutes, drones that wouldn’t power up and fly, cameras that wouldn’t turn on, steady-cams that would not remain steady, HDMI cables that became brittle and snapped in the cold, frozen audio equipment, broken LCD mounts, broken down snow mobiles and more. We existed on a diet of freeze dried cod and pasta washed down with tepid coffee and the occasional frozen mars bar. But in spite of the conditions, it was one of the most rewarding shoots we have all been involved in. We hope you enjoy it! YETI Presents: Carter Andrews

A fisherman down to the DNA, Carter Andrews has no choice but to go out there and catch everything that swims. Described by a friend as a “wild man”, he does have a certain intensity about him. But you don’t have only anglers as friends unless you’re still lit up with raw joy every time a fish bites.
