Mumbai-based Eeksaurus and Bioscopewala to produce musical animated feature with France’s Mozaic

Suresh Eriyat’s Studio Eeksaurus, Bioscopewala Pictures and France’s Mozaic Productions have announced a co-production for a 2D animated musical feature Hoodoo, which is slated for release in late 2019. Eeksaurus and Bioscopewala Pictures are both based in Mumbai.

Fabrice Ziolkowski, who wrote the screenplay for Oscar-nominated feature The Secret of Kells, has been developing Hoodoo for the last six years. The original concept is based on the emotional and magical powers of music, especially the blues traditions born out of African American culture. “The blues is a crown jewel of American culture and it has conquered the world. Rock ’n’ roll, R&B, soul music and rap all find their roots in the blues,” noted Ziolkowski.

The screenwriter first discussed the project with Bioscopewala Pictures, president, Nishith Takia, when they met at Annecy last year. “I love the blues. When I heard the story of Hoodoo from Fabrice, I immediately knew that I wanted to produce this film,” said Takia. “So, I collaborated with Suresh — a Cristal award-winning director — and his creative team from India, together with my strong production team, to produce this truly international film.”

Hoodoo revolves around a 10-year-old girl named Luanne Carver, who sets out to uncover the true story of her bluesman grandfather’s life in Depression-era Mississippi. The mystery she seeks to resolve: Did he really sell his soul to become a great musician? While the movie is designed for families, the filmmakers also hope to attract adult audiences by tapping the rich heritage of the blues.

The film will be co-directed by Ziolkowski, Eric Berthier and Suresh Eriyat.

“I found the idea of collaborating with Fabrice and with Nishith on an international animation feature film absolutely exciting and challenge,” shared Eriyat. “This will be the first time talent from India will be on the forefront of the creative process, and not just at the back end of a supply chain.”

He further added, “Fabrice’s moving script about the struggle, joy, suffering and mythologies of the people of the blues really makes an emotional connection with me. A world alien and mysterious to me, but one I look forward to discovering during the development process.”

The Greatest Recruit in North Korea

Part Time Lab, New York, has won gold for Best Use of Social Media at the Golden Award of Montreux for “The Greatest Recruit”, a campaign developed for Liberty in North Korea (LiNK). LiNK is focused on the support of refugees from North Korea. Against a backdrop of nuclear programs, forced labor camps, and an infamous, brutal dictator, thousands of North Koreans make their escape. Their stories go largely untold – a cause that people across the globe could actually affect. Part Time Lab needed a new way to break through all of the noise coming out of North Korea – a way that flips the script and gets people talking about the North Korean refugee crisis. They enlisted the help of the glorious leader himself, Kim Jong-Un, online at thegreatestrecruit.com. Kim Jong-Un took to major job search sites (Job Spider, WiseStep) and announced unlimited job openings in North Korea – job openings that anyone in the world could apply for. In case anyone doubted Kim, Kim Jong-Un’s LinkedIn profile was developed to include achievements like his sanctioned nuclear plants and child labor programs and also a commercial for his recruitment campaign. For his cabinet, Kim got on Twitter @_Kim_Jongun,and hand-selected his picks – picks like Leonardo DiCaprio as the Minister of Environment. Every applicant was redirected to a landing page for Liberty in North Korea.

“LinkedIn shut down the campaign after seven days. But, in those seven days, donations to LiNK were up 427% with new visitors contributing 42% of the total. Over 50 news outlets picked up the story further expanding our reach. Best of all, we did it with virtually no spent media.”
