Toonz Media CEO, P Jayakumar: ‘Uma and Devan Namaste!’ to be launched at MIPCOM 2017

Few days back it was announced that India’s Toonz Media Group has joined hands with the USA based production company Sharmaji for producing preschool animated content. The series which is the first to explore the daily lives of Indian-American families targeting pre-schoolers, follows the lead characters Uma and Devan as they balance growing up in USA while also maintaining their Indian cultural heritage.

AnimationXpress spoke to Toonz Media Group, CEO, P Jayakumar to get better insight into the creation and distribution of the new series, Uma and Devan Namaste!.

Uma and Devan Namaste! animated series will be launched during MIPCOM – the world’s leading screenings and conference for entertainment content across all platforms which takes place in Cannes, France – in October 2017. The first season of the show is expected to have 26 episodes and is planned to be distributed to major TV and digital channels worldwide after its launch in October 2017. The run-time for each episode will be 11 minutes.

The 2D animated series will originally be released in English, “but we will create versions in other languages based on the global demand,” says Jayakumar. Toonz will handle the production out of their studio in Trivandrum, India itself whereas the writers and the voice cast will be NRIs. The direction will also happen in the USA. The project which is being funded by Sharmaji and Toonz will be co-created by both the media houses.

If you are wondering about the characters of Uma and Devan, Jayakumar reveals, “Uma and Devan have a loving and dynamic relationship that is also complex. They go through trials and tribulations, and use teamwork to find solutions that are inclusive.” Uma is a nurturing and affectionate elder sister and Devan is an admiring and compassionate younger brother, but they are nevertheless competitive. Devan many-a-times will try to tell a story and in excitement Uma will interrupt or rather ‘take over’ to fill in details which definitely miffs Devan who gets frustrated. “In the end, however, there is no bond stronger than theirs and they always come to each other’s defence. They are an excellent example of friendship and a heart-warming example of siblings.”

Jayakumar adds, “The characters in the series are based on a real life Indian family, living in the United States.” The owners of Sharmaji Productions are of Indian origin but grew up in the United States and United Kingdom. They have two children whose life and stories are the inspiration for Uma and Devan Namaste!

As mentioned by Jayakumar in a previous interview with AnimationXpress, he had plans to venture into the USA market. “We have seen an opportunity for a cultural specific show like this in the US market,” states Jayakumar. The show which is a very first collaboration between Sharmaji and Toonz will be heavily promoted through digital and social media platforms. The creators also intend to have apps, websites and other digital properties to support the series.

So what makes Uma and Devan Namaste! different from the other shows produced by Toonz Media? The series is the first animated series that tells the story of Indian children growing up outside of India. “We now live in a global society and our children will grow up connected to the rest of the world. Through the lens of our Indian culture, we hope children will discover how similar and connected we all really are.” At the core of the series is the universal brother-sister relationship and learning values of teamwork, perseverance, curiosity, empathy, and respect for all kinds of diversity.  “Traditional Indian values such as a strong sense of community, the importance of extended family, respect for elders, and hard work will also be woven into the context of the series.”

The production teams also have plans to create a franchise out of the multi-million dollar project, whose IP is owned by Sharmaji Producions. Toonz expects to also work on more projects with Sharmaji in the future. As of now, the global distribution team is said to syndicate the project across the globe.

When asked what he wishes to tell the audience through the show, Jayakumar said that they want to encourage cultural diversity and teamwork at an especially critical time for the young ones. “Often times, the series finds Uma and Devan experiencing the unique cultures of their friends, only to have them learn to respect, admire, and celebrate all of the diversity that they are exposed to as Americans,” concludes Jayakumar.

Toonz Media and Sharmaji bring a very fresh concept through Uma and Devan Namaste!. Among most pre-school shows that explore the genre of fantasy, this one with a unique storyline will grab the attention of children as well as the interest of the elders. What’s in store will only be revealed later in the year.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ final trailer gives first look at Kurt Russell

Marvel released the final trailer of one of its most anticipated movies of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, on Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel’s live show. And you would want to wait till the end of this one because…

Finally! Kurt Russell makes his first appearance as Star-Lord aka Peter Quill’s father. “After all these years I’ve found you,” says Ego the Living Planet, to Star-Lord. “And who the hell are you?” asks Star-Lord. “I’m your dad Peter,” Russell replies.

The humour and action-packed sequel which tells us that anyone can save the galaxy, will see the guardians Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Raccoon Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) who will be joined by Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Yondu (Michael Rooker).

There is no highlight. There are highlights- Rocket using the “wrong eye” to wink, Baby Groot munching on something that looks like M&Ms, Star-Lord finally getting the romance out of Gamora and Russell’s debut in the MCU.

The movie sure uses plenty of guns and a multitude of spaceships, offering nothing less than its prequel. Characters are shown battling on dull-looking to most colourful environments on various planets, out of which we cannot yet figure out which one could be Ego. Yondu’s yaka arrows and weapon controlling skills seem to get a fresh take and a lot of significance too.

In part one, it was “Nobody talks to my friends like that” and in this one it is “We’re family”, as Drax does not lose charm with his corny dialogues. The action comedy sees certain emotional moments as Drax explains to Nebula the family bond of their mismatched group and as Peter Quill encounters Ego in a dramatic father-son reconciliation.

Trailer #3 saw Drax very brazenly slurping from a bowl as the other guardians who are excruciated by his highly ungraceful etiquettes just stare at him. Star-Lord and Rocket’s excellent comic timing do the thing for us!

Director James Gunn also tweeted a newly unveiled vibrant poster of the feature.

All in all, the upcoming instalment in the MCU brings with it the promise of lots of action, adventure, hilarious moments, witty punch lines, awkward occasions, backed with some of the most stellar soundtracks like “Come A Little Bit Closer” and “The Chain”. We can’t wait for this one!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theatres on 5 May, 2017.

‘Alien Covenant’ trailer: The path to paradise begins in hell

Fox has just released a terrifying, new trailer for the upcoming feature, Alien Covenant. The upcoming instalment in the ‘Alien’ franchise from Ridley Scott is slated to release on 19 May, this year.

The new trailer shows off a colony ship comprising of couples sailing through the vast space in search of a habitable, uncharted planet. They land upon a planet which looks quite mesmerising at first sight, with water bodies and breathtaking valleys stretching throughout. However, the team turns suspicious when they find some stalks of wheat growing in some parts, indicating that humans have been there before.

“What are the odds of finding human vegetation this far from Earth?” one of the team members asks.

Following that, the team stumbles upon eggs of an alien species in an abandoned bunker sort of thing. These things soon hatch and mercilessly chase the crew members, picking off the helpless crew one by one. The trailer also features a full-fledged clip of a Xenomorph attacking the ship.

The series is a sequel to 2012’s ‘Prometheus’ by Ridley Scott. The film’s plot is set in the late 21st century, around 30 years before the happenings of Scott’s 1979 film, ‘Alien’. Prometheus told the story of a set of scientist on-board a spaceship of the same name and how they find an advanced civilisation whose weapons could wipe out entire humanity. The film made around $403.3 million at the worldwide box office.

The upcoming film stars Michael Fassbender (reprising his role as the robot David), Noomi Rapace (reprising her role as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw), Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Guy Pearce and Danny McBride.

Mobile games generated over 25 per cent more direct spending than PC games last year, says report

App Annie and International Data Corporation (IDC) today unveiled a special joint report entitled, “Gaming Spotlight, 2016 Review.” The report analyses the mobile video games market in 2016 from several vantage points and puts it in a broader, global gaming industry context.

“2016 was the best year yet for mobile games, with consumers spending nearly 25 per cent more than the year prior,” said, App Annie, SVP of research, Danielle Levitas. “The breakout success of Pokémon GO propelled mobile games further ahead of consoles, PC/Mac, and handheld consoles. As augmented and virtual reality technologies continue to emerge, we expect mobile will remain the largest revenue-generating platform for games.”

Although games represented about 35 per cent of total iOS App Store and Google Play app downloads in 2016, games generated over 80 per cent of combined direct App Store and Google Play spending worldwide. As in previous years, spending on iOS games was significantly higher than the Google Play total, and was indeed higher than all Android-based stores put together, last year.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO

The rise of China and Japan as global mobile gaming powerhouses was evident in 2016. The top grossing iOS game globally last year was Fantasy Westward Journey, published by China’s NetEase. The most lucrative Google Play title was Monster Strike, published by Japan’s Mixi. Gaming Spotlight, 2016 Review outlines the top five grossing titles across iOS, Google Play and handheld game console platforms for all of 2016. The top grossing handheld console title was Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon for the Nintendo 3DS, published by Japan’s The Pokémon Company.

For mobile games, Pokémon GO came in third in 2016 for total game-spend across iOS and Google Play, despite being available for only half the year. The title generated about $950 million in direct spending in 2016.

Given the rising interest in mobile AR games such as Pokémon GO and in mobile VR games like Mojang’s Minecraft Gear VR Edition and CCP’s Gunjack, the Gaming Spotlight, 2016 Review also delves into this topic in some detail based on a survey of over 4,600 mobile and handheld gamers in United States in 3Q 2016. Two of the most notable takeaways from this survey are that:

  • Approximately 24 million Americans played an AR game in September, 2016, and 56 per cent of this gamer base was under 25 years of age (primarily reflecting Pokémon GO’s popularity among children and young adults)
  • About 4.5 million Americans played a VR title on their smartphone last September, and these gamers were fairly hardcore (46 per cent played mobile games for >15 hours a week, 56 per cent were male, and the group’s average consumer spend on mobile games was 42 per cent above the total mobile/handheld gamer average spend in 3Q 2016)

“2016 was the breakout year for mobile AR games,” said at IDC, research director of gaming and AR/VR, Lewis Ward. “Since a quality mobile VR gaming experience generally requires a separate hardware purchase such as a Gear VR or Google Daydream viewer, it’s unlikely that mobile VR gaming in 2017 will replicate what AR gaming achieved last year. The demographics of mobile VR gamers nonetheless point to rapid revenue growth moving forward, and the fact that a large share of mobile VR gamers also enjoy eSports content implies that competitive multiplayer gaming will emerge as an important mobile VR market driver – and help put some distance between the leading suppliers and the competition.”
