FMX 2017’s programme – a wealth of riches

IMG_9629

It’s hard to write a post that will do the programme for FMX 2017 justice. There are just so many great speakers and sessions planned. If you’re able to head to Stuttgart on May 2-5, I’d say, do not hesitate.

This is one of the CG/VFX/Animation/production conferences where you can actually spend all four days in wall-to-wall sessions, or spend just as much time catching up with colleagues and friends.

If I had to list some highlights, they’d be something like this:

Valerian – ILM and Weta Digital have a sneak peek presentation.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 – Animal Logic and Weta Digital also showcasing their work.

Rogue One – John Knoll’s going to be there!

Animation director’s panel – Kelly Asbury, Peter Lord and more.

Pixar and Disney – pretty much anything they’re doing, from Piper to Moana

Scanline’s Stephan Trojansky on water sims – the studio’s Flowline tools are some of the best

Anything real-time – Epic’s there, as is Unity, and there’s a special automotive thread

Digital humans forum – this is always awesome, and what you get is a lot of frank discussion and research being presented

OK, there’s so much more – check out the programme here: http://www.fmx.de/program2017/overview. And I’ll be there at FMX, so please come up and say hi.

The Boss Baby director put up with my crazy niece and nephews

BossBaby_main-1280x600

Recently I got a chance to do a phone interview with director Tom McGrath, whose newest film is DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby. I was in Tasmania when I did the call, babysitting my amazing niece and nephews. But just because of the time I did the call, I had to ask the kids if they would be quiet for about 30 minutes.

They weren’t.

While I was transcribing the interview there were several moments I’d forgotten about where the kids came up to see and ask what I was doing, and others where they were fighting with each other in the background (and there’s a few moments of me saying ‘Shut up!’, too – thank goodness for the mute button on Skype…).

Anyway, I really enjoyed chatting to Tom, and the film is fun throwback to the look of old-school animation design in some ways. Check it out at Cartoon Brew.

Studio 100’s Blinky Bill to be aired by NRK Super in Norway

Studio 100 Media has signed various agreements to bring The Wild Adventures of Blinky Bill (52 x 12’) to the Nordics.  Public kids’ broadcaster NRK Super has just acquired the show about the cheeky Koala for Norway.

NRK Super is the largest and most successful children’s broadcaster in Norway. Launched in 2007, it includes a digital TV channel, digital radio (24 hours), a free VOD player and an extensive website and apps.

Prior to NRK Super’s acquisition, their Swedish neighbour SVT Barnkanalen has also acquired the series, with Nelonen Media securing the rights for Finland last year.  Home Entertainment and VOD (Video on Demand) rights have been sold to SF Studios and SVT Barnkanalen will begin airing Blinky’s adventures in the Nordics in summer 2017.

Studio 100 Media, head of global distribution, Martin Krieger commented: “We are pleased about the ongoing collaboration with our long term partners Nelonen Media, NRK Super and SVT Barnkanalen as well as SF Studios.  All these channels and distributors are already home to other Studio 100 animation and live action shows such as Maya the Bee, Heidi, Tashi or Kosmoo and Nightwatch.  Our team is confident that the Australian icon Blinky Bill will sweep the Nordics off their feet in this witty and cheeky CGI version.”

SVT Barnkanalen is Sweden’s public broadcaster for children which airs 15 hours a day and targets kids aged from three to 11. Nelonen Media is a broadcasting group reaching more than 90 per cent of the Finns. It operates four nationwide free-to-air TV channels, five pay TV channels, four nationwide radio channels, two regional radio channels, AVOD and SVOD services. SF Studios is a commercial film company in the Nordic region which produces filmed entertainment for the cinema and home entertainment, and is the leading distributor of foreign films and TV series in this market.

Just recently, Studio 100 Media closed an agreement with AMC Networks International – Central Europe (AMCNI CE) to bring its CGI series Nils Holgersson and The Wild Adventures of Blinky Bill to various territories.

Live-action series ‘ReBoot: The Guardian Code’ based on ‘90s animated series ‘Reboot’, will premier in Canada in 2018

WOW! Unlimited Media’s Mainframe Studios and Corus Entertainment announced that production on the live-action elements of ReBoot: The Guardian Code, a 20×22 minute live-action/CG-animated hybrid television series, is underway in Victoria/Vancouver, B.C.

This next phase of production reimagines the original 1994 animated classic, ReBoot, in a real life setting for modern, tech savvy audiences. Created by Michael Hefferon, the show follows four teenagers who discover that they’ve been selected to become the Next-Generation Guardians of cyberspace. ReBoot: The Guardian Code will premiere in Canada in 2018 on YTV.

After playing the multiplayer Cyber Guardians video game together, four teenagers are recruited by V.E.R.A (Hannah Vandenbygaart, Bruno & Boots: Go Jump in the Pool!), the Virtual Evolutionary Recombinant Avatar, to fulfill their mandate to mend and defend cyberspace. Austin (Ty Wood, The Haunting in Connecticut), Tamra (Sydney Scotia, Some Assembly Required), Parker (Ajay Parikh-Friese, Mr. Young), and Trey (Gabriel Darku, Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments) now must protect cyberspace from threats that pose true consequences to both the virtual and real world. It’s more than these kids expected when they started at Alan Turing High.

The action-comdey series intercuts live-action scenes with awe-inspiring CG animation produced with the Unreal game engine, showing how the real world and cyberspace are interconnected. “The power of the game engine’s capabilities to create vast cyberspace settings along with AI (Artificial Intelligence) for dynamic secondary animation fused with live action, will deliver a truly unique and engaging experience for viewers”, says creator and executive producer, Michael Hefferon. “As groundbreaking as the original ReBoot was being the first ever CG animated series, ‘ReBoot: The Guardian Code’ takes it to a whole new level.”

This innovative series will also deliver true 360-degree engagement experiences for audiences with interactive mobile games, a digital trading card game that syncs with the broadcast of the series, and a Virtual Reality experience that puts fans right in the middle of the cyberspace action.

ReBoot: The Guardian Code is produced by Mainframe Studios in association with Corus Entertainment, with executive producer/producer Michael Hefferon, executive producer/showrunner Larry Raskin, and Matt Sheppo, the production executive for Corus. The action-comedy series is directed by co-executive producer Pat Williams, and Michael Dowding is the supervising director of Animation. Corus Entertainment’s YTV is the Canadian broadcaster with Nelvana Enterprises handling worldwide distribution, licensing, and merchandising for the series.
