Lita Roza – I Remember You (1962)

Lita Roza sings “I Remember You” on a 1962 TV show. She was a popular singer, but sadly most of her TV appearances are lost. I hope this has better sound quality than the other person’s copy.

Stan Lee reveals his cameo projects; won’t mind starring in DCEU

It’s a known fact that Stan Lee has bestowed Marvel with some of the most popular superheroes in its history. Be it the X-Men, Spider-Man or even the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Iron Man, Stan Lee has made them all which led to the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

Due to his immense contribution at Marvel, Stan Lee is often seen doing cameo appearances in many of the Marvel film and television projects. A few of these appearances are self-aware and sometimes refer Lee’s involvement in the creation of certain characters. While going for a Marvel movie, fans eagerly wait to witness Stan Lee on the big screen even if he appears for a few seconds.

However, while most of his credits include fictional characters for the Marvel Comics, little is talked about his contribution to Marvel’s rival DC Comics. His work first work for DC Comics was witnessed in the 2001 in the Just Imagine… series wherein Lee re-imagined the DC superheroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash.

So why don’t we see Stan Lee in other comic based movies apart from those of Marvel? At Stan Lee’s question and answer panel this past weekend at Fan Expo 2016 a fan in the crowd asked if Lee would ever consider doing cameos in other projects. Lee responded with: “I can’t make out what he said, but it sounded like it came from the heart. I want to do more cameos also, I’ve even let people know it doesn’t have to be a Marvel movie, I don’t know why DC hasn’t called me. They could use me!”

Watch the panel here:

Maybe this was an indication for DC Movies to start cashing in on Lee’s popularity and star him too in their movies. Apart from this, Lee stopped by the morning television program Breakfast Television wherein he revealed about his future cameos in MCU. He mentioned that he has already filmed his roles for three upcoming Marvel movies: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Doctor Strange (or, as the host mistakenly and delightfully calls it, Doctor Strangelove).

Lee was also asked if he got any say in the size and scope of his cameos, to which a playful Lee replies: “Oh no no, they decide. If I was deciding it would be a half hour role. They only give me a few seconds, and they’re afraid I’ll overshadow the star. You know how that is.”

Well, that’s a lot of good news for the comic book fans from the demi-god of comic industry himself. All we got to do now is wait for Doctor Strange release to witness Lee’s magic on the big screen once again.

Sony to venture into mobile gaming industry, says CEO Kaz Hirai

Sony has undoubtedly been a prominent name in the world of console gaming. With loyalists of its PlayStation platform from around the globe, Sony has always stayed on top of their game while being considerably ahead of its Microsoft counterpart, Xbox. While console gaming has been rewarding for Sony in terms of revenue and popularity, it seems that the company will now also point its focus towards mobile gaming.

Kaz Hirai

The mobile gaming industry is a booming one and has a larger base of audience than any other mode, thus it is not surprising to see that big names from the gaming industry are leaning towards this market, which still has a huge untapped potential.

Now, Sony, CEO, Kaz Hirai, while speaking to the Financial Times has revealed that Sony is indeed planning on “aggressively getting into” the booming industry of mobile gaming. It seems like Pokemon Go has been an inspiration not only to small firms and indies but also big players like Sony as Hirai explained, “Pokemon Go is a real game-changer,” he said “I’m very interested in the fact that it has the potential to really change the way people move, literally.” He even went on to say, “(It’s an) innovative idea that’s going to lift all boats for the video game industry.”

Sony had launched its mobile app/games developing division, ForwardWorks, in April this year and although there are no reveals or releases planned yet from the developers, Sony had implied that they will be using as many IPs as they can from their PlayStation franchises.

Hirai has also hinted that they would be interested in making AR games and given Sony’s Tokyo Game Show conference coming up on 13 September, we can expect some product from ForwardWorks, even if not related to AR.

Making of ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ – A perfect film beautified by imperfections

“It’s not going to be easy, it’s going to be worth it” – Art Williams

Laika took this very seriously and lived this philosophy at every moment, every minute of each day for the past few years as it created the phenomenal animated feature Kubo and the Two Strings.

One is left with nothing but an open mouth filled with astonishment when we observe the amount of patience and hard work which goes through while working on a stop motion animation project. A blend of creativity and technology is what defines the process of animation as it demands the technicality of the left brain along with an artistic approach of the right.

Laika, CEO, Travis Knight explains, “We always want to challenge ourselves. We always want to try something new. We always want to tell new and original stories.” A comprehensive piece consisting emotions, logic, love, hatred, separation, union, life and death; Kubo and the Two Strings is a magical fantasy which connects directly to the real life of every viewer.

Kubo 1

Style of animation

To enhance such an in depth story, the style of animation has to take the wheel. Laika chose to go beyond the extraordinary as it integrated puppet animation, stop motion animation and CGI for this film. The artists worked on around 72 different sets which were built manually including the character design and various production aspects. The puppets of all the characters were created along with CGI backgrounds to produce the final output.

It’s all organic

Every character, their costume and every tiny prop was created by hands to give the rusty and organic feel. When you create something with your own hands, you tend to make mistakes and give way to imperfections. Laika wanted a perfect film with such imperfections.

Character Design

Each and every character has been designed with specific attention given to the minute detailing to bring out the whole feel of the film. The costumes and appearance of every character had to reflect the era, culture and authenticity of the environment of the script. The costumes were designed using wires frames and tiny weights to hold various types of cloth in place in a suspended position. The monkey character had fur fabric coated with silicon rubber while, Kubo and his mother had real human hair coated with silicon.

Props and Sets

A huge boat was created with tonnes of tiny printed leaves stuck on it. The major sets included an eyeball robot, the larger than life size skeleton robot, boats, flying moon beast, snowy landscape made of foam and the paper art.

The minute props like the Shamisen, swords, bow and arrow, armour and variety of helmets have been crafted by hands to maintain the miniscule alterations.

Laika known for films like Boxtrolls, Caroline and now Kubo and the Two Strings has raised the bar for itself. It has proved that technology cannot limit the creativity of the mind, in fact technology can just enhance the creativity and take it to new levels all together.

Knight exclaims, “The style in which we make our films is a convergence of art and craft and science and technology.” The essence lies in the imperfections and organic feel for it is all crafted by human hands with ideas borne out of human minds. Laika’s work clearly proves that ‘There is no limit to animation’.

Disney reveals before and after images of ‘The Jungle Book’

What goes into the Jungle has always been intruding and mysterious. The key frame animation done for Disney’s The Jungle Book has been revealed with few behind the scene images. As no motion capture was involved to create the animation, the entire film involved various characters that were created using key frame animation technique while the background was created using CGI. Moreover for few scenes, mainly the ones where Mowgli played by Neel Sethi physically interacts with the animals, various body parts of Mowgli or even entire Mowgli is digitally doubled. Nazara Games ties up with indie game developer Yogesh R P to publish ‘Baby Ganesha’

The genre of endless runner games has created quite a mark in the mobile gaming scenario. From Temple Run to Subway Surfer and Minion Rush, they have all been player favourites and have earned their creators quite lucratively, in terms of revenue. Even Bollywood seems to be coming up with the ‘endless runner’ or ‘infinite runner’ gameplay into the official games of their movies – few instances would be PK: The official game, A Flying Jatt: The official game, TE3N: The official game and more.

And now, this Ganeshotsav which is believed to be an auspicious time for new beginnings, a developer named Yogesh R Pugaonkar has ventured in with a simple yet engaging endless runner game. The game named ‘Baby Ganesha’ is a simple, serene and vibrant game set in the 2D canvas with the backdrop of Kailash – like mountain ranges. And publishing this game is India’s leading mobile games developer and publisher Nazara Games.

In Baby Ganesha, you help little Ganesha trot through the uneven landscape riding on his little mouse companion in a quest to consume as many modaks and other sweet delicacies as he can. Powered by Unity engine, the game is quite fun to play and the simple imagery coupled with a low-key background score makes it even better.

Baby Ganesh

AnimationXpress reached out to Yogesh R Pugaonkar, whose brainchild is Baby Ganesha, to get a better perspective about the game.

Baby Ganesha is a casual game. We wanted to make a simple game so that everyone from kids to adults could enjoy it. Another important motive of this game is that we want our players to feel relaxed, de-stress them and give them a soothing experience balanced with fun and adventure as the game proceeds. We focused more on graphics, as the visuals will give them the required experience. The main concept of Baby Ganesha is based on the ancient story in which lord Ganesha teaches the lesson of humility and love to Kubera.”

It’s the story where Kubera invites Lord Ganesha to his palace for a meal and is unable to satisfy the Lord’s hunger and resorts to Lord Shiva for help and ultimately pacifies the Lord. However, the developers of the game have thought of adding a twist to the tale’s climax.

“We imagined a different climax, as in the panic state, Kubera comes to Lord Shiva and asks for forgiveness and the solution to satiate the baby Ganesha’s hunger. With his supreme powers he creates a fantasy world, a journey which has no end. In this world, baby Ganesha can have fun and gobble unlimited desserts he loves (modaks, laddus, burfis) with a touch of a never ending adventure where he can jump in anytime. This is how Baby Ganesha’s concept was born.”

Pugaonkar expressed that a game with Ganesha as a character can be launched at anytime and would still be loved; coming up with such a game during Ganeshotsav is just an added benefit.

As we have mentioned earlier, the game looks pretty neat and clear in a time when a lot of games are cluttered with unnecessary elements. Pugaonkar explained, “We wanted this game to be vibrant with simple yet prominent visuals where users can feel the dazzling Himalayan environment. Vivid, rich and colourful were the key factors kept in mind while designing the backgrounds and characters for Baby Ganesha. We wanted it to be funny so the character designs were made accordingly, especially the Rakshasa characters. Another unique element of this game is its sound effects. The voice over of the character is adorably funny and is being loved by the players. Most loved ones are ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, ‘Wow! Laddus’ and ‘yummy’. The voice over for Baby Ganesha has been done by a four and a half year old star, Rudra.”

The music used is royalty free music, like Music (cdk Mix) by cdk (c) copyright 2015 Phasenwandler. With a team of only three people, Pugaonkar himself, who took care of the designing and project handling, Shantanu Salvi, who looked after the programming part and Rita Pugaonkar, who is creator of the storyline, it took the creators around two months to bring the game to life with updates already planned for near future. According to Pugaonkar, the game has been designed to suit everyone’s liking and hence does not resort to a specific target audience.

Baby Ganesha

But with so many games both infinite runners and Lord Ganesha themed ones already out there in the market, why would someone choose to play this game?

“The USP of this game is the main character itself. There are many games on Lord Ganesha already in market but Baby Ganesha’s character designs, detailed and smooth animations, rich visuals and engaging level designs will make this game stand out in the crowd,” exulted Pugaonkar.

The game looks pretty decent and probably that is why a big name like Nazara Games chose to publish it. Speaking on the deal with Nazara, Pugaonkar expressed, “I am sure they (Nazara Games) will use the best revenue model from their side for this game. We were very happy when Nazara Entertainment  approached us regarding publishing ‘Baby Ganesha’. We worked with Nazara team and it was a great experience.”

We have reached out to Nazara Games for a comment and will update you as soon as possible.

Overall, as we have already said, the game looks really neat and detailed. It might not be a really fast paced, intense game but it definitely stands out for its simplicity while still being fun to play.
