‘V for Vendetta’ writer and comic book legend Alan Moore announces retirement

V for vendettaBeing regarded as the best graphic novel writer in history isn’t something which comes easily to one. One needs to earn that title and Alan Moore’s exemplary work defines why he’s regarded as one. The 62 year old comic book writing legend (as he prefers the term comic over graphic novel) has co-created influential titles like V For Vendetta and Watchmen. And now, he has announced that he’s planning to retire from the comic book-penning world.

Moore confirmed to Guardian that he’s retiring from the medium. During a press conference in London for his new prose novel Jerusalem this week, he mentioned that he’s got “about 250 pages” of comics writing left in him. “I think I have done enough for comics,” Moore told reporters. “I’ve done all that I can. I think if I were to continue to work in comics, inevitably the ideas would suffer, inevitably you’d start to see me retread old ground and I think both you and I probably deserve something better than that.”

With DC Comics, he became “the first comics writer living in Britain to do prominent work in America” as he worked on major characters such as Batman (Batman: The Killing Joke) and Superman (Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?), substantially developing the character Swamp Thing, and penned original titles such as Watchmen.

He had sour relationship with DC Comics in 1980s over the creator’s rights and merchandising. Since then, he has said he wishes his name to be removed from all comic work that he does not own, including Watchmen and V for Vendetta, which both remain properties of DC Comics.

Moore also reiterated his distaste for the superhero-dominated mainstream comic industry, saying “The superhero movies – characters that were invented by Jack Kirby in the 1960s or earlier – I have great love for those characters as they were to me when I was a 13-year-old boy. They were brilliantly designed and created characters. But they were for 50 years ago. I think this century needs, deserves, its own culture. It deserves artists that are actually going to attempt to say things that are relevant to the times we are actually living in. That’s a long-winded way of me saying I am really, really sick of Batman.”

Even though he’s sick of Batman, Moore said, “I will always revere comics as a medium,” mentioning that he plans to move on to something new.

His final projects include H.P. Lovecraft – influenced series Providence, the movie-themed anthology series Cinema Purgatorio, and a final volume of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Mode of animation used to highlight the plight of elephants during this festive season

Taking advantage of the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi festival, an animated film has to draw attention to the sad state of Elephants in the country which have dwindled by fifty per cent over the past few decades.

Culture Machine’s digital channel ‘Being Indian’ has released the new video titled ‘Our Elephants’ to throw light upon the plight of elephants and the gravity of elephant corridors. The film says the total population of elephants has fallen to between 27,000 and 29,000.

‘Being Indian’ takes the opportunity to edify people about the conditions of the real giant wanderers.

Elephant corridors are nature’s highways that allow elephants to move from one habitat patch to another. India houses 50 per cent of the entire elephant population and we must support the country’s efforts to promote elephant corridors and help preserve the friendly giant’s habitat.

Although possessing an over powering exterior, elephants are one of the most social and intelligent creatures. They are responsible for sustaining the forest and keeping our ecosystem together.

The usage of 2D animation could be observed in the 6:31 minute ‘Our Elephants’ by Being Indian video which narrates the man v/s his giant story through a humane dialogue. Man survives by destroying and creating what has been given to him by nature. An elephant is similar, as he creates rivers and trails that lead to the evolution of newer species. But we as humans are disrupting this great cycle of evolution and creation, poor elephants end up paying the price as they get run over by trains while making their great expedition through the forests.

Culture Machine’s digital channel ‘Being Indian’ said, “It’s very crucial for us to realise the importance of the deteriorating conditions of our forests and dimensioning population of elephants. We have curated this content to raise awareness about the situation at hand and help make a difference through our platform.”

The film gives the message: One can either choose to be affected by the world or choose to affect the world. So, why not befriend an elephant today?

Adobe unveils new VR, character animation and 3D innovations

The recent tends of technology are sky rocketing with futuristic and innovative concepts. Now everything that we thought wasn’t possible few years back is already reality or on the brink of it. One of the famed software companies, Adobe is all set to step forward in catering to the content demands of various platforms, both new and traditional.

The company has revealed a series of innovations including virtual reality (VR) and motion graphics and character animation supported by tools to deliver measure and monetise TV and film content across multiple screens. These will be coming soon in Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Marketing Cloud.

“Adobe is helping video creators of all kinds – from broadcasters and big movie studios to YouTubers and brands – create their best work,” said Adobe, senior director of product management, Bill Roberts.

Roberts further added, “As these stories take shape, ideas need to seamlessly move between tools, technologies and teams. Adobe’s multiscreen solution helps media companies connect with their audiences in a personalised way by delivering compelling experiences and adopting immersive capabilities such as 3D, VR and AR.”

Video editors from Hollywood to Sundance to YouTube are taking note of Adobe Creative Cloud, most recently Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, and through the work of next-generation creators like Smosh, RocketJump and SoKrispyMedia. Television networks are bringing characters to life with character animator in content like The Simpsons and Cartoon Donald Trump on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Additionally, NBC Sports recently leveraged Adobe Marketing Cloud solutions to power the digital delivery of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Expanding on the new VR features launched earlier this year, Adobe is unveiling additional innovation in the next release of Premiere Pro CC including auto-aware VR that seamlessly detects and applies the correct setting to stereoscopic and monoscopic media.

Rapidly accelerating 3D content creation, Adobe will showcase a 3D rendering engine which increases the pace and efficiency of 3D content generation. Artists can also now create editable 3D elements such as text and shape layers intuitively from within After Effects CC with new Cinerender technology from MAXON.

Here’s how it should enhance performance and facilitate workflow:

Huge productivity gains (up to six times faster) with Adobe Stock video are reported in a new study by Pfeiffer Consulting, which compares using video with Adobe Stock and other stock services.

Performance improvements with real-time playback in a new After Effects video preview architecture lets users play raw footage in real-time, eliminating the need to cache before previewing footage. GPU-accelerated effects enable faster render compositions.

Refined Lumetri Color tools in Premiere Pro CC now provides HDR10 metadata support for editing and delivering HDR10 for new HDR-enabled TVs and displays, plus expanded support for colour space metadata, providing greater precision for delivering brilliant imagery.

Destination Publishing to render and share video to Behance, the world’s largest creative community, is now possible along with YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Better captions and subtitles in Premiere Pro CC lets users easily create and fine-tune captions to enliven silent auto-play video previews on Facebook for higher engagement, target different languages or improve accessibility for hearing impaired viewers.

Actionable analytics in Adobe Analytics for Video allows users to measure streams instead of just video starts and stops, delivering a more comprehensive view of how videos are consumed.

Premium ad-supported viewing on connected devices is now supported in Adobe Primetime, allowing media companies to deliver quality and buffer-free experiences, while weaving content and ads together into a single stream.

Billy Crudup to don the mantle of Henry Allen in ‘The Flash’ movie?

Superhero movies are always loved by the enthusiasts and given the recent releases, they work out pretty well, even revenue-wise for the makers. Warner Bros. has a few superhero movies lined up from the DC universe in the coming years.

Currently Justice League is under production and once it’s done, one of the superheroes would get busy for his very own film. The Flash, where the protagonist role of the superfast meta-human would be played by Ezra Miller is slated for an early 2018 release.

Now, as Variety reports, Billy Crudup is in talks of playing Flash’s father, Henry Allen in the movie, however it has not been confirmed by the officials. Curdup has previously worked with Warner Bros as Doctor Manhattan/Jon Osterman in Zack Snyder’s ‘Watchmen’.

Billy Crudup Watchmen
The plot of the film is still unclear, but it would be interesting to see how it plays out. It has been a rumour that The Rouges will be the crew of villains in this superhero flick. Kiersey Clemons has also joined in as Iris West.

Miller has already played a cameo in ‘Batman v Superman’ and will be seen in action in the upcoming ‘Justice League’ movie, which hits the screens next year. However, the details of ‘The Flash’ movie are being kept under wraps.

Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script based on a treatment by Chris Miller and Phil Lord and the movie will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa.

Previously, Crudup has worked in titles like Spotlight (Oscar Winner), The Stanford Prison Experiment, 20th Century Women.

Justice League is slated to release on 16 November, 2017.

VFX Breakdown of Bajirao Mastani

NY VFXWAALA adds grandeur to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani by delivering 1400 VFX shots right from background creations, set extensions, creation of CGI army, horses, water, weapons, castles, interior architecture to environmental elements including rain, sky and clouds. The romantic drama of an historic event was brought to life under the supervision of VFX supervisor Prasad Sutar.

NY VFXWAALA takes filmmaking to another level with ‘Bajirao Mastani’; Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s belief in VFX strengthens

When you want to bring something alive, you have to strive till your last breath and channelise all your energy to make it happen. And when you have to bring out a collaboration of history, romance and drama to life, you have to be head on heels at every moment, fine tuning every minute detail with emotions and perfection.

A film which captivated viewers across the globe by its dramatic storytelling, grandeur of history and power of love – Bajirao Mastani was a visually appealing movie enhanced by the immense amount of VFX work. NY VFXWAALA, a division of Ajay Devgn Films, delivered this film over a span of eight months in terms of CGI creation and visual effects with a team of 50 to 60 artists working on it.

The movie vividly proclaimed the unique filmmaking style of Sanjay Leela Bhansali through the glorious appeal, majestic costumes, monumental backgrounds and luxurious architecture. However, the 1400 VFX shots produced for the film right from large background creations to minute weapons escalated the story from a splendid drama to a royal big screen movie.

“What was not possible to shoot in live action was created using CGI and VFX. Bajirao Mastani was a romantic drama of a historic event thus, every VFX shot had to look real and also had to have a connection to history. Every shot had an emotion and thus demanded its respective colour palette and background elements to bring out the feel and tone of the scene,” claimed NY VFXWAALA, VFX supervisor, Prasad Sutar.

Prasad Sutar opens up about the work carried in this historic drama film with AnimationXpress.

How did the association happen between NY VFXWAALA and Sanjay Leela Bhansali?

After having supervised Ram-Leela, Bhansali sir’s next film Bajirao Mastani undoubtedly fell onto my shoulders. Working with such a legendary filmmaker has always been a learning experience but it also brings in a load of responsibilities and expectations. I had to always keep up to the standards of his production scale and larger than life concepts of filmmaking.

output_yqjEcb

How were the VFX shots decided?

Our team was involved right from the scripting stage. And throughout the shooting process, we would discuss and analyse whether a particular shot was possible to shoot live or else it would be created in CGI and VFX. I still believe in keeping minimum green screen and shooting live as much as I can. Then I take these shots as references and add effects to it because the feel of live shots is quite different and realistic. Thus, every shot was well conceptualised. Software like Photoshop (matte painting), Maya (animation, VFX), 3ds Max (animation, VFX) and Nuke (compositing) were used.

What were the major VFX sequences?

The opening war wherein the entire army was created using CGI, was shot in broad daylight and then converted into night. The close ups were shot indoor therefore we had to match and blend all the shots together. This sequence itself had around 300 VFX shots with minute detailing as this was the introductory sequence.

The climax sequence had live water shot on camera with CGI horses, arrows and fireballs. Bhansali sir had visualised the climax but our team enhanced the scene with our own thoughts and ideas. The climax took around 15 to 20 days to be completed with perfection.

output_12HctJ

Bhansali sir wanted the opening of the film to be grand and I wanted the film to open in a unique way too. But throughout the whole filmmaking process, we couldn’t figure how to do it until we finally thought of using animation. It was not a planned sequence and we had less time, so we crafted storyboards and drew the story of Bajirao and his kingdom. Animation was the best medium to convey the designs using utmost liberty within a limited timeline. In fact, all the storyboards for the entire film were hand drawn and then created digitally.

Any peculiar sequences or instances?

In one of the battle sequence, Bhansali sir wanted to shoot around 300 to 400 horses standing in a particular manner. But, it was impossible to achieve these and manage so many horses. Thus, we shot the sequence using just four to five live horses and added the remaining horses using CGI. However, in few other war sequences, we used live horses in large numbers to bring out the realistic feel.

Another sequence where Ranveer Singh (Bajirao) crosses the sea in a boat at night had a huge chunk of visual effects as the entire water was created using CGI. The splashes of the waves, the rain falling except the portion falling on Ranveer, and the night sky were all produced in post production.

output_OTrxq0

How is colour pattern an important part of filmmaking?

Colour helps to set in the mood of every scene; it enhances the emotions of every sequence and sends a distinct feeling to the viewers. As this film was a romantic tale with intense dialogues, colour was an important factor that we had to keep in mind always. For example, for various dark emotional scenes we kept the background greyish with dark night sky whereas for various fresh scenes, the background sky was bright with a shining sun complimented with vibrant colours.

How was it working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali?

Bhansali sir is a highly creative person with great visualisation power. He is a filmmaker who has constantly evolved and is willing to accept change by adjusting to the new technology. While working with him on Ram-Leela, he never preferred VFX and thus used just minimum of it. But in Bajirao Mastani, his confidence in VFX rose to a higher level. He visualised his scenes keeping VFX in mind and undoubtedly believed that VFX could pull his shot and add grandeur to his sequences. Therefore, I have seen him evolve and give the ability of VFX work its due importance and deserving space.

Bajirao Mastani has set a benchmark to take visuals and storytelling to another level. After Baahubali, this is the film that has displayed the potential and expanse of VFX in the Indian film industry. The film grossed $52 million (Rs 350 crore) at the box office and Sutar won several awards like Zee Cine, Screen and the Asian Film Awards for Best Visual Effects for this film. It is a moment of pride and honour that India has been recognised and appreciated for VFX at the Asian Film Award stature in competition to films from across Asia.
