Ever seen someone type ‘gg ez’ after a game of Overwatch? Annoying, isn’t it? Not any more, it’s not.

Artificially-intelligent robots. Self-driving cars. Neuro-technological brain enhancements. Genetic editing. The evidence of dramatic change is all around us and it’s happening at exponential speed. Previous industrial revolutions liberated humankind from animal power, made mass production possible and brought digital capabilities to billions of people. This Fourth Industrial Revolution is, however, fundamentally different. It is characterised by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, impacting all disciplines, economies and industries, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human.

NBCUniversal to eliminate 200 jobs at DreamWorks Animation, Glendale; employees soon to receive termination notices

Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal is eliminating about 200 jobs at DreamWorks Animation unit Glendale. Following Comcast and NBCUniversal’s $3.8 billion acquisition of the company recently this year, such a move was expected.

The reductions are focused on corporate overhead groups along with distribution and consumer product. Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, chairman, Jeff Shell wrote: “We have begun sharing organisational decisions that will result in the elimination of approximately 200 positions at our Glendale campus. These changes are focused in the corporate overhead groups as well as distribution and consumer products, areas where we can fully integrate operations with NBCUniversal.”

Comcast closed its deal to acquire DWA in August thus the layoffs are not a surprise and routinely happen after mergers and acquisitions of this size as evaluations are made to eliminate overlaps.

Employees in marketing, distribution, consumer products and financial areas in Glendale will start receiving termination notices as early as this week. Here’s the memo that was sent out by Shell.

DreamWorks Animation Glendale

To: DWA

Subject: A Message From Jeff Shell

Dear Colleagues:

As we move along in the process of integrating our companies, the leadership team will continually evaluate the needs of our business to ensure we are best positioned to meet our goal of being a leader in premium animation content across all platforms. As indicated on Day One, we remain committed to transparency and, over the next few months, will communicate about any changes expected as a part of the integration with NBCUniversal.

To that end, today we have begun sharing organizational decisions that will result in the elimination of approximately 200 positions at our Glendale campus. These changes are focused in the corporate overhead groups as well as distribution and consumer products, areas where we can fully integrate operations with NBCUniversal.

Those who will be impacted by these decisions will be notified this week and many will be working with us over the next several months as a part of the transition. These are difficult but necessary moves as we work to integrate our organizations and we will be as generous as possible to those who will be leaving the company.

We know you will join us in supporting your colleagues during this time of transition and we too will be exploring other opportunities for them and providing career placement counseling to help minimize the impact.

Looking forward, we are excited about the incredible opportunities ahead for our combined organization and we will work together to make them a reality.

Thanks for your continued hard work,

Jeff Shell

HBO and Cinemax set to venture into PlayStation Vue

In an age where cable service providers are being replaced by live television through online streaming services, the already existing big players of the industry are walking that extra mile to leverage on the ongoing trend.

Sony for one has been trying to make amendments to provide replacements of cable networks and fill it up with online streaming services on their devices. The company’s online streaming, live TV service, PlayStation Vue will soon be hosting HBO and Cinemax. Each one of the networks would be available for $15, that is on top of whatever package of PlayStation Vue the consumers are subscribed to.

Game of Thrones
This would be the first time the networks would be offering live TV on standalone devices, not just on video on demand service like HBO Now. Also, if someone subscribes to HBO through PlayStation Vue, they will be able to access HBO Now, for free. HBO and Cinemax can be subscribed to as a bundle or as a standalone subscription.

Also, HBO Now would soon be available on PS4 and PS3 and the list also includes the recently announced PlayStation Pro.

While, nothing has been revealed on when the services would be online, it is expected to launch ahead of of the 2 October premiere of the highly-anticipated new HBO series “Westworld.” It would be a good reason for cord-cutters to rejoice as they can enjoy live television on the go through their PS4 and PS3.
