Legendary tale ‘The Lion King’ to be remade in live-action by Disney and Favreau

Dwelling into nostalgia often soothes the mood by flashing memories that are long forgotten yet vividly remembered. Forgetting is essential and harmful too but, completely forgetting a reverberating story is inevitable. The legendary animated musical film The Lion King which baffled the audience till date right from its release in 1994 is one such story which is hard to forget if experienced just once.

Disney does not want the audience to forget its tales therefore a live-action adaptation of The Lion King is set to roll in production. The Walt Disney Studios on Tuesday announced that the Jungle Book studio and director Jon Favreau are re-teaming for a “live-action” The Lion King on the fast track to production.

And you read it right, the recent jungle epic which won a thundering applause and huge box office collections ($965.8 million) The Jungle Book director Jon Favreau will be helming this project. Delivering such spectacular work in terms of creating the animals, wildlife, dense forests with the only human Mowgli interacting with the photorealistic animals, Favreau is undoubtedly the perfect fit for this film.

The LIon KIng

As per the announcement, The Lion King will be a “live-action” film and as far as we all know the original story does not have any human character. So, with no live human character in it, the film is still going to be a live action film and not a CGI animated film, sounds intriguing? (It can be shot live in terms of the environment but CGI, keyframe animation or motion capture will be used to create the animals in some way.)

Disney perplexed the viewers with the liveliness of the animals and the jungle created on computer (extensions of what was shot live) using advanced technology of animation in the Mowgli film. Therefore, creation of Simba, Mufasa, Scar, Nala or Rafiki can be awaited for with high expectations as it is the same studio and the same director.

Live action remakes of rich Disney tales have been a usual practice with Cinderella, Maleficent, Pete’s Dragon and The Jungle Book each portraying something unique in their own way. Moreover, the Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson is also set for March 2017. And now, The Lion King is another project where both expectations due to the legendary story and milestones due to the advanced technology need to be fulfilled impeccably.

Pencillati Studios ventures into IP creation with its slapstick animated short ‘The Bloop Troop’

The New Delhi based three year old service production house for game art and animation films which began as a two member team and has gone out to become a 30 member strong company, has finally come out with its own animated short film. Founded in 2013, Pencillati has successfully shipped the complete game art for three mobile gaming studios, including the wildly popular DragonSoul RPG by PerBlue.

Putting focus on the future of game art, animation production and IP creation, the studio recently released its first 3D animated short film “The Bloop Troop”. This film has been in the works for the past six months, although the first concepts had started to appear during late 2015.

Here’s the synopsis of the short:

A ruthless barbarian, a hair-splitting master archer and a knight in shining armor are brought together in the battlefield by a common enemy – a formidable fly. What ensues in this battle of epic proportions tests everyone’s skills and takes an age-old war that every human has wanted to win, to a whole new level.

As the 2:59 seconds animated clip begins to roll out, we are greeted by the huge eyed fly – who seems mischievous and smart – along with the quirky background score. The vibrant visuals, actions, humour keeps the viewer hooked throughout the short. Certain parts of the movie are well executed like the slow motion segment of the fly, the chase scene, the detailing of all the characters is well executed.

“The idea of ‘The Bloop Troop’ started taking shape towards the end of 2015 as we developed few visual art pieces and wrote more about the plot. There is more to these characters than this short film,” says the director of The Bloop Troop, Ram Singh. “We see a lot of short films and animation these days explored in several mediums and styles, but we finally decided to stick to the slapstick style of humour we grew up enjoying in old cartoons such as Tom and Jerry and Road Runner.”

With The Bloop Troop, the Pencillati team wanted to keep this project short and high quality to test their strength and pipeline in a real production scenario. “Although we are happy with the results we realised it was very much possible to aim even higher in terms of quality and scale of production within existing setup,” comments Singh.

A team of six people worked on it part-time. The music has been provided by Orange Byte Studios. Talking about the budget, Singh adds, “Our budget for this short film was not pre-calculated. As it was little more of an experiment with a new pipeline, especially when we planned on using Blender 3D setup.”

The open source 3D content creation platform – Blender is comparatively a lesser used software in India, since most Indian production pipelines are strictly Maya. This also meant that The Bloop Troop team had to learn this new software and simultaneously keep the ball rolling on the film.

Directed by Ram Singh and produced by Vivek Singh Sidhu, the short which released last week has been getting good reviews and far has managed to get 13K views on Vimeo.

Pencillati Studios will be visiting MIPJunior and MIPCOM and we wish the team all the best for their future endeavours.

Sony Bravia Balloons and Glitter

Sony has launched a new advertising campaign which showcases the incredible picture quality of its new range of Sony BRAVIA 4K HDR TVs. Shot in 4K, the Sony Bravia Balloons ad brings to life a forgotten, derelict casino in Constanta, Romania, using 4000 balloons and over 1500 KG of glitter in the visually enchanting setting. Opening with a single white balloon entering an empty building, the casino gradually fills with balloons and mesmerises onlookers before the balloons explode in a cacophony of colour as glitter cascades around the casino. By using a combination of different shooting methods and angles, the Sony Bravia Ballons ad sets out to capture the brilliance and beauty of 4K HDR through the juxtaposition of pure white balloons and the glorious colour of the glitter, culminating in a stunning explosive climax.

As well as the TV commercial, the campaign will encompass cinema, VOD, digital, out of home and point of sale to convey the core message, ‘More Brilliance. More Beauty’ and celebrates the exceptional colour, contrast and detail delivered by the new range of Sony 4K HDR TVs.

The accompanying key visuals were shot by high-speed photographer Fabian Oefner who attached a noise sensor to the camera shutter, so that it triggered every time a balloon popped, helping him to achieve incredibly detailed and striking images.

Shuhei Sugihara, Head of Brand and Product Communication, Sony Europe, says of the advert: “Whether through our products, or through our marketing, our company’s philosophy is to satisfy people’s curiosity.

“Our new TV commercial continues BRAVIA’s legacy of adverts. From balls, bunnies and flower petals to balloons and glitter – Sony has always used striking colour and visual beauty to showcase its range of televisions. The creative direction of this footage was based on the same idea and we hope viewers truly feel something from this beautiful image, which uses a million glittery details to truly demonstrate the difference our 4K HDR TVs provide in terms of colour, contrast and detail.”
