Making a non-Pixar film at Pixar
Posted in: AnimationHere’s how two great Pixar artists did it in a new article at Cartoon Brew.
In the past couple of weeks, we have been hearing a lot about Superman making an entry in the second season of Supergirl. And finally, The CW has released the first official look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman on Supergirl.
In season one, Supergirl played by Melissa Benoist could be seen exchanging texts, however his physical presence was missed. He’s always been depicted as a silhouette or a blur of motion.
“I think it’s the perfect time,” Benoist said at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “All of the interactions (Kara) had with him last season through the instant messaging and the texting, it never felt like enough to me. Their relationship is important, and they’re family and she has things that he doesn’t and he has things that she doesn’t. They’re only going to reap benefits from each other. I’m so excited about it.”
The character of Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent, will first be seen visiting his cousin Kara in National City at the beginning of the series’ second season. Tyler Hoechlin’s costume as Superman has been designed by Kiersten Ronning, and draws inspiration from the New 52’s version of the costume, with a red belt instead of red trunks and muted colours.
“I think the fun is going to be finding where Clark Kent is in this world. I’m just excited to find out Clark’s sense of humour,” Hoechlin said of the character.
While it hasn’t been explicitly stated, the obvious reason for Superman’s visit to National City is the crash-landing of a Kryptonian escape pod not unlike the ones he and Supergirl used to get away from the dying world. The pod touched down on the outskirts of National City just hours after a Kryptonian uprising was quelled and Earth’s population was freed of the influence of a Kryptonian mind-control satellite.
The second season of Supergirl is set to premiere on The CW on 10 October.

George R. R. Martin has personified the creation of a fictional world. With multiple characters, each with an in depth backstory and some commendable connection to the storyline, Martin has managed to link everything to let the plot proceed and take a new turn in each season. Game of Thrones is undoubtedly a classic piece of art, storytelling and intense drama.
Building characters, stories and relations can be all within the power of the writer’s mind but when it comes to building palaces, kingdoms, thrones, war grounds, landscapes and backgrounds, the VFX team comes into play.
Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) released a VFX breakdown reel showing the creation of one of the most thrilling sequence of Season 6. The devastating decision of Cersei giving a go-ahead to unleash a cache of wildfire on the Great Sept of Baelor, which while not entirely a surprise, was certainly a visually enthralling sequence of the entire season six finale. It showcased almost every major player from King’s Landing, including Margaery Tyrell, go up in flames.
Various elements like building of palaces, vintage structures, statues, mountains, sea, greenlands and the sky have been created using CGI and VFX. Crowd multiplication and set extensions are two things that RSP has played with throughout the sequence in order to bring out the intensity of the drama.
As far as the fire is concerned, it leads one to believe the irony ‘Destruction is beautiful’. The whole sequence of destruction due to the fire has been created quite meticulously as it brings down huge structures and turns them into fumes. So, you may wish to disagree the fact but somewhere this destruction is entertaining.
Game of Thrones is best watched then told and this VFX breakdown stands true to this practice.

It’s quite common to see a comic book series getting its own movie wherein few issues are released related to the storyline of the film to promote it. However this scenario is something that’s unknown in the Indian market. Generally a comic related to the movie is released post the film’s premier (exception being The Blueberry Hunt). Seems like the Telegu film industry is now being open to the idea of not just incorporating VFX in their films, but also of using the medium of graphic novels to engage their audiences for their upcoming movies (like Baahubali). This time, its the Telugu movie writer and actor, Kirti Rambhatla who has collaborated with the Indian comic book publisher, Fenil Sherdiwala.
AnimationXpress learnt this heartwarming news from the comic publisher himself, Fenil Sherdiwala who’s the founder of Fenil Comics. Fenil Comics has more than 36 comic characters under its hood and with Taskara coming under its kitty, exciting times lie ahead for the comic company.
An Indian film made in Telugu language, Taskara was a neo-noir cyber heist thriller film with elements of geopolitics which got released on 8 January, 2016. The film was written by Kiriti, directed by a team at LME, music by Rohit Kumar and produced by Libra Media & Entertainment Motion Pictures. The story is about a mysterious hacker who steals Rs 10 trillion from the central bank of his country to show how easy it is to loot as a bank rather than stepping inside one and looting it.
You might be wondering, if the film is already out then how’s this something new? Well, we learnt that the film is going to get sequels, and for that the comics will act as a bridge.
When and how did this association take place with Taskara’s writer Kiriti Rambhatla?
I would like to first mention that I am a big fan of movies along with comic books and I watch all kinds of them including international movies and Indian regional language movies with subtitles. As I was searching for some cyber heist and technical thrillers in Indian movies, I stumbled across ‘Taskara’. It was under production and the teaser had been released which attracted my attention. I got in touch with the writer / actor of the movie and coincidentally he was a big comic movie fan too. Thus, started our association.
Since Taskara is a Telugu movie which has already been released, what new will the readers get to witness in the graphic novel?
The field of economics, hacking and crypto currencies is very extensive and new to Indian audience. These are the pillars on which the movie story was built. However, it is hard to convey the entire concept in two hours. Here is where the graphic novel differs. We will be building on the movie’s character, making him a superhero in the future editions from which he will then be adapted into motion pictures. Taskara’s superhero character will join the Fenil Comics league of superheroes ‘Universal Kings’ soon. That is what makes the graphic novel special. It has lot more layers to the character than the movie.
Can you elaborate a bit more on the storyline?
Taskara is relatively a new genre for Indian audience as I mentioned earlier. It is told in a ‘neo noir’ format which is a cyber heist thriller. But the plot is very intelligent and complex. Where Taskara invests the money he hacks is the big question. What he does after the heist and how he changes his identity are all answered in the graphic novel series in the future.
How many people are involved in this project?
There are six pillars to this graphic novel. Kiriti Rambhatla who is the creator of the character and has also written the screenplay of the motion picture. He also starred as the lead character in the movie. The story has been adapted to the graphic novel by Sudeep Menon who is a writer for the popular Doga series. Mohit Arya has illustrated all the pages of the first series with Zakir Hussain colouring the entire series. As for me, I have edited the series.
What kind of art style would we get to observe? And what’s the involvement of the filmmaker?
Fans will be treated to different styles of artwork in all three parts of the book. We have used state of the art softwares that are used in the comic book industry to bring the characters to life. The copyrights of the writer are independent of the film makers.
How many issues are you planning to roll out and how many pages will it consist?
Series 1 of this graphic novel will have 3 parts consisting of 32 pages each. The future series are under works and cannot be disclosed at the moment.
What will be the distribution channel and where all will it be distributed?
Fenil Comics has entered the distribution market in the year 2010. Initially, we have catered to Hindi speaking audience in the North Indian zone where we have established a strong fan base. However, with Taskara, we will be expanding our distribution all over India as the graphic novel is in the English language. Subsequently, we are also planning to distribute it in the overseas market including the UK and USA as well.
Being a Telugu film based graphic novel, how are you planning to market it pan India?
As I mentioned earlier, though the movie was made in Telugu, the content is very international. Infact, some USA based comic book portals have already previewed Taskara graphic novel for its unique storyline and content. So the content will find takers all over India and overseas. We plan to promote the book in conventions and fairs. There will also be a teaser of the book launched soon. English language is another advantage that the novel possesses.
What’s the target audience?
The graphic novel will follow the suit of the movie and will have universal content suitable for all age groups as it doesn’t have any mature content in it.
As for the writer / director of the movie Rambhatla, he believes that Taskara as a character has great potential to be an indigenous grown Indian super hero in the coming years.
The graphic novel is set to release on 20 August and it would be interesting to see how the book fares in the market as it sure has a unique plotline attached to it.

Jay Ahn and Chris Henderson launch new production facility – Astro-Nomical Entertainment
Posted in: AnimationAnimation veterans Jay Ahn and Chris Henderson are launching a development and production company named Astro-Nomical Entertainment with an aim to create high-quality independent animated family films.
The Burbank-based company will focus on producing mid-budget family animated features, TV shows, video games and mobile content. Astro-Nomical will be backed by China-based Characterplan and focus on developing intellectual property. It will have a special focus on China.
The new production company has already got its first project “Mean Margaret”, a feature film based on the children’s book by Tor Seidler. Mulan co-director Barry Cook is in talks to helm the project.
The animated feature will center on a cranky toddler who is being raised by two kind-hearted woodchucks. The toddler from a family of nine taken in by two woodchucks is raised as their own among a community of wacky animal characters.
Ahn and Henderson will produce the film, with production responsibility on the shoulders of Montreal-based Digital Dimension.
Just a peek about the background, Ahn is one of the founders of ToonBox Entertainment, where he most recently served as co-CEO and co-president and executive produced The Nut Job, which grossed an indie toon record $120 million at the global box office.
Henderson worked for a long time in Walt Disney TV Animation, serving as a showrunner for the series 101 Dalmatians and Hercules. He was then tapped to produce animated DVD releases, including Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and the sequel to Peter Pan, Return to Never Land.

Mashup of Sesame Street with “Summertime” starring Big Bird as The Fresh Prince, Snuffy as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Zoe as the unnamed female singer, and plenty of cameos by the rest of the crew. Video by Mylo the Cat aka Adam Schleichkorn. I know it’s always great to go the gangsta rap route, but I really feel as if Big Bird is a perfect match for Will Smith. I put a ton of thought (for some reason) into song choices and characters, so hopefully it comes across. I was taking my time on this one, but then I recently got inspired by an editor named Vic Berger, of Super Deluxe. He and Tim Heidecker attended the Republican National Convention last week, and cranked out an amazing 20 minute video, basically instantaneously. So, I figured it’s time to stop messing around, and get this thing completed. I hope to work with these guys on a Chubby Checker mashup one day, or perhaps one for the greatest rock band ever, Dekkar.
Anyway, I understand that my channel name is isthishowyougoviral, but if this doesn’t go viral, it’s seriously all good. With all the nonsense going on in the world today, these videos are meant for a 2 minute escape and smile, that’s it. I read every comment on almost every platform, and whenever I see that one of my videos made someone’s day better, that genuinely makes mine better. Lastly, I don’t make any money off of these videos, so I’d just like to say that it would be nice if you a**hole popular Facebook pages shared my Youtube embed, instead of Freebooting, so I could at least receive credit for the views.

Why Did People Think the Moon was Made of Cheese?

In this video:
In fact, as any pest exterminator or pet shop owner knows, mice don’t really like cheese at all and they’ll even actively shy away from certain types of cheese (they have a very sensitive sense of smell and certain cheeses give off odors that are repulsive to many types of mice).
