Iconic band ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ set to rock the comic world again in September

Josie and the Pussycats roomAfter being shot to death, we thought this would be the last we saw of the red haired goofy guy Archie. However, last year it was revealed that Archie will be back in a new resurrected version by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples. Since its launch, the comic series has been getting a good response and now we hear yet another great news. The company has just announced that the iconic rock band Josie and the Pussycats are getting an ongoing series set in the same new continuity as the excellent Archie and Jughead comics.

It will follow the suit as the rest of the characters as Betty and Veronica are getting their own series in July whereas Josie and the Pussycats comic series, featuring the exploits of Riverdale’s most popular all-girl rock band, will be out in September. According to Archie Comics, the new series will feature Josie uniting the band to take their big shot at musical stardom, only to contend with the machinations of Alexandra Cabot, the ever-Machiavellian daughter of the Pussycats’ manager.

Here’s the text for the first issue, from an official press release: Friends, countrymen, lend me your long tails and ears for hats—the Pussycats are back! In this series kick-off, Josie’s getting the band together to help achieve her dreams of musical stardom. But for the group to last, it needs a strong foundation of friendship and trust. Can the girls get going, or will Alexandra’s plotting put a stop to the whole thing? Don’t miss comics’ supreme songstresses’ return to the limelight in this exciting first issue!

The series will be co-written by Marguerite Bennett and Cameron DeOrdio and the art will be given by Audrey Mok. Mok also drew the cover of the first issue, but as with Betty and Veronica, Josie and the Pussycats #1 will also feature variant covers from fellow Archie Comics artists Veronica Fish (Archie) and Francesco Francavilla (Afterlife with Archie).

Josie and the Pussycats #1 hits comic stores on 28 September.

‘Watch Dogs 2’ trailer: Hackers set their eyes over San Francisco

If you are a fan of the Watch Dog franchise, it seems like you are definitely in for a treat with the new and upcoming edition of the IP developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Watch Dogs is a open world third person, action game originally released in May 2014 over PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows and eventually on Wii U. The initial version was based in Chicago, Illinois following the main protagonist, Aiden Pearce, who hacks his way through, while seeking revenge for his niece’s killing.

The new version however, looks even better. It is set in the backdrop of San Francisco and follows the main protagonist, Marcus Holloway, a brilliant DedSec hacker who tries to pull off the master of all hacks. He must attempt and succeed in shutting down ctOS 2.0, a technology used by the powerful ones to manipulate and control the normal citizens.

In the game, the whole San Francisco Bay becomes the playground as one has to hack their through the traffic and indulge in rooftop fighting and exhilarating car chases. The surroundings look pretty vibrant with colourful buildings and technology taking its place all around (of course, it’s San Francisco after all!).
Overall, the game will not be of much difference than its predecessor in terms of the story base but it has been polished to a new level. You can hack cars, drones, cranes, robots and your bystanders alike. Basically, everything related to ‘tech’ can be hacked into and thus there can always be an unexpected chain of events making the game pretty dynamic. The game will also feature co-op and player vs player activities in multiplayer options.

More info on the game is likely to be revealed at E3 this month. Watch Dogs 2 is slated to release on 15 November, 2016 over PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Cosmos-Maya strengthens its digital presence with ‘WowKidz’ its YouTube platform

Cosmos Maya, the Singapore and Mumbai based leading animation studio and producer of original Indian animation content, today announced its business diversification initiatives for future growth. Having carved its niche as a successful creator of IPs in the kids’ content space, the company is on a massive growth path and this is the first among many of its strategic growth initiatives.

Beginning 2016, the company has started its digital video outfit, WowKidz as a YouTube exclusive channel, where the content from their successful shows is being played. With almost 1,60,000 active subscribers and around 200 million cumulative views within a few quarters since launch, WowKidz is one of the fastest growing video platform for kids’ content; driven purely through organic growth.

The company has a two-pronged approach to successfully tackle the digital revolution; first is to strengthen its presence on YouTube, the world’s largest video platform through its constantly growing existing content bank and produce high-quality original Indian animation for the recently launched and upcoming kids’ VOD platforms.

“Content consumption is changing dramatically in the digital era and the barriers of geographies are breaking. We at Cosmos-Maya are keen to produce good original content for the global VOD platforms that will bring in the best of Indian animation content for kids of Indian origin all over the world,” said Cosmos-Maya, CEO, Anish Mehta.

Eena Meena Deeka

The content ecosystem is evolving by the day and newer touch points are essential for consumers to engage with brands in order to build brand loyalty. WowKidz, both as the video platform and as a merchandising avenue are thereby the logical brand initiatives as part of the growth strategy of Cosmos-Maya.

Taking a step by step growth approach, the company has started off the merchandising division with offline products sales inspired by their IPs and also online sales of their merchandise across all the leading e-commerce portals. The next brand growth for WowKidz is a dedicated e-commerce platform of its own, ‘www.wowkidz.com’ which will have a mega launch in third quarter of 2016, coinciding with the biggest Indian festival, Diwali. “The idea behind these initiatives is to make the value proposition for our content more robust, and create more avenues to link the IP creation process with the IP monetisation. Kids want to buy the merchandise inspired by the shows that they consume and thus these initiatives have been taken in tandem with each other,” adds Mehta.

Apart from the merchandise inspired from the Cosmos-Maya’s own IPs, including the successful shows like Motu Patlu, Shiva, Kisna, Eena Meena Deeka and ViR – The  Robot Boy, wowkidz.com will also provide the best of merchandise products from the best animated shows on television, available at the click of a button. The popular third party merchandise includes products inspired by many successful animation shows, including all time classic animation shows Mickey Mouse, Tom & Jerry, Barbie; other renowned brands like Hello Kitty, Hotwheels; shows popular with Indian kids like Chhota Bheem, Doraemon, Ben10 and global superheroes like Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Avengers to name a few.

ViR

World over, it is the IP monetisation that drives the animation production and India as a market too is evolving now. With the advent of e-commerce, the availability of high quality original products is easier for the average consumer and thus it is the right time for a focused venture like this. There is a good demand for animation content of Indian origin all over the world thanks to the widely spread Indian Diaspora, especially in highly developed markets like United States of America, Canada, Europe, Australia among others.

As platforms evolve, the IP creation process also evolves. Cosmos Maya leads the market in terms of creation of animated content with over 25 and a half hours of broadcast content created per month, which equals to almost one season a month between different shows. This is substantially higher than most of their competitors. Cosmos Maya is more focused on generating brand value through IP creation and since content is now more platform agnostic, it is important to create more consumer touch points.

With a slew of television successes, 5 shows on air, 3 under production getting ready for a launch, rapidly growing global viewers on their YouTube platform and a newly launched dedicated e-commerce merchandising platform, Cosmos-Maya is all set to consolidate its leadership position in the kids’ content space.

‘Sultan: The Game’ developer 99Games opens up about their association with YRF for the film ‘Sultan’

Going by the current trend, and as a part of the digital promotion campaign, YRF recently released a trailer of the game for their upcoming movie, ‘Sultan’ starring bollywood stalwarts Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma. Developed by Udupi based mobile-gaming studio, 99Games, the action based game takes one into the heart of the wrestling arena, where you play your opponent as ‘Sultan’ or Salman Khan himself. Players can upgrade their fighting skills and top the leaderboard.

AnimationXpress got in touch with 99Games, AVP operations, Anila Andrade to get an insight about the development of this movie based game. When asked about the overall idea of the game and how it compliments the characters from the film, Andrade asserted , “The movie Sultan is a classic underdog tale about a wrestler’s journey, looking for a comeback by defeating all odds staked up against him. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain in this fight for his life match… Sultan must literally fight for his life. Sultan: The Game follows a similar footprint. Players have to fight their way through, across 60 levels of in-ring action filled combats.”

According to Andrade, the project for Sultan came to them, while they were  still working on FAN:The Game, based on Shahrukh Khan starrer, FAN. It took them an average time of six months and a team of eight people, including the production and marketing team to conceptualise, design and bring the Sultan game to life as its release is scheduled on 10 June, 2016.

Sultan The Game1

The game will be adhering a freemium model, meaning, the game will be free to download and play. However, players can make in app purchases to upgrade their fighting skills. Apart from in app revenues that have been planned, the studio has partnered with multiple advertising network partners although Andrade confirmed that, “Ads are strategically shown so as to not disrupt player experience”. They have plans to support the game depending on consumer demands.

It also seems like, the studio has quite some plans for promoting their game. “We’re running a joint PR with YRF Studios announcing the launch. We will also be running digital and non-digital promotions in collaboration with YRF. Salman Khan and team have shown their support and have shared the trailer on his social media channels. Several in-game contests have been planned with real time gratifications including a ‘Meet and Greet with Salman Khan’.”

While a film and a game based on that have become quite a trend in the industry right now, it is not only the production company that benefits from it by extending its audience base, but the studio earns quite good revenues from its IP. As the game is based on a movie, it practically promotes itself as a part of film promotion. When asked if it is mutually beneficial for the production company and the studio, Andrade said, “For the film producers, games are a massive opportunity to engage with their consumers directly albeit on a different platform and also helps extend their audience base. For the studio, a strategic partnership with a movie house which has a strong IP helps solve the problem of discoverability. A game with a good business model monetises well. Hence a win-win for both the the studio and the film producers.”

Sultan: The Game releases tomorrow and we have to wait and watch on how the audience receives the game, as Salman Khan has an immense fan following and 99Games have been quite a player in this genre.

Samsung saves worst Instagram account

Samsung recently helped an Icelandic man widely known for having the worst Instagram account ever to take brilliant pictures, thanks to the camera on the Galaxy S7 smartphone. In a campaign created by Cheil Worldwide and launched last month, Samsung helped a fisherman from Iceland take the perfect picture after his attempts to show off his surroundings were hampered by low lighting. Due to the low quality camera on his smartphone and the fact that Iceland is pretty dark, especially in winter, fisherman Rúnar Jónsson’s Instagram amounted to a collage of dark squares. He soon became famous for having the worst account on Instagram. Samsung and Cheil Worldwide equipped him with a Samsung Galaxy S7 and, thanks to the transformative effect of the phone’s camera on low lighting, Rúnar can now show the world exactly what he sees. His Instagram followers are now encouraging him to take more pictures and one fan even created the hashtag campaign #Runarforpresident which became a trending topic.

Cheil Worldwide Netherlands Creative Director, Ton van Jole said: “We were so moved by Rúnar’s story and that shows throughout the work. To launch a cutting-edge smartphone, you need to think mobile first and that’s why we put Instagram and social media at the centre of our campaign. Thanks to the incredible support from his fans and followers, Rúnar’s story has taken off in ways we couldn’t have imagined when we first came up with the idea.”

Malcolm Poynton, Global Chief Creative Officer said: “Malcolm Poynton, Global Chief Creative Officer said: “Sun-drenched Californians may not see the need for a great low-light camera. But the rest of us can relate to Rúnar’s Instagram story, even if our photos aren’t quite as interesting as those of the Icelandic fisherman.””
