The San Diego Highwayman

Thomas Weller, a.k.a. “The San Diego Highwayman” has been rescuing people stranded on the side of the road for 48 years. When he was 16 years old, he drove his car into a ditch. A man came along and rescued him, asking only that Thomas pay it forward one day. Since that time, Weller has rescued thousands of people who were stranded in one way or another. Weller hands them a card that says “You don’t owe me a thing. I’ve been there too. Someone once helped me out, just the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here’s what you do: don’t let the chain of love end with you. Back in August of 2011, Weller’s famous rescue car “Beulah” was totalled during a rescue. The remains of his prized car still sit in his back yard. Weller simply can’t afford to repair the car but has dreams of getting her back on the road while he’s still able to help others. About the Project: www.whileimheretheproject.com While I’m Here | The Legacy Project is a series of videos that profile living legacies while they’re still doing what they do best … turning life into legacy. I decided to start this project after missing out on the chance to tell the story of a man from my hometown who dedicated his life to helping others. That man’s name was Frank Dymock. For years, Frank opened his garage to the public and sharpened skates free of charge. He wouldn’t accept a dime. He was an icon in the place where I grew up, and I always wanted to tell his story while he was still here. Regretfully, I let time pass, and Frank passed away before I had the chance to tell his story. This project is dedicated to him and to countless others who live selflessly and truly leave a legacy, forever impacting the lives of the people lucky enough to cross their paths. This project is 100 per cent a passion project. It’s self funded and something I wanted to do to pay it forward to people like Frank and Thomas (The San Diego Highwayman) who is profiled in this first film. The crew and I have donated our time and personal expense to make this first film happen, and I am truly grateful that we were able to do so. Special Thanks: A very special thanks to Thomas and his wife Patti, who spent so much time with us and opened their doors to allow us to help tell this special story. ‘A Surreal Lucid Nightmare’

dawnofwar_controls_b

That’s a great way to describe anything, let alone a cinematic launch trailer. So when Axis Animation followed the idea for the new Dawn of War III, I had to to talk them – here’s the final piece for Cartoon Brew, with LOTS of behind the scenes.

Disney reveals Pete’s invisible ‘Dragon’ in its new trailer

The battle for survival is not always faced alone. Sometimes we find few companions who are worth living and probably worth dying for too. Disney’s upcoming live action feature displays the beauty of companionship between a human and a humongous dragon with the power of turning invisible.

The recent trailer of Pete’s Dragon unravels the secret held by its first teaser as it portrays that ‘Some secrets are too big to keep’. Unlike its teaser which came out in February, this trailer reveals the central essence of the film- Elliott-The Dragon.

The young protagonist Pete played by Oakes Fegley stranded in the forest is restored back to human civilisation but can he live without Elliott after being with him for six long years? Moreover, can Elliott survive without the little boy?

Friendship is a relation which crosses boundaries of sacrifice and willingness to take risks. Pete too returns to his dragon for he knows that Elliott cannot survive alone. But, a dragon among humans does not sound to be a probable affair. Humans may turn out to be dangerous or the dragon may turn out to be violent and alarming.

As far as the animation is concerned, the CGI dragon does not look that appealing for it seems out of place. Just by the first look of the dragon you realise that it has been created and does not kind of belong to the usual setting of the film. But, may be that is how director David Lowery wants his characters to be and definitely, it is a bit early to judge.

The dragon can disappear! This is one feature that we can look forward to as various sequences when the dragon turns invisible may seem visually enthralling. WETA Digital and Double Negative seem to have done a decent work of VFX and CGI creation from the trailer however let’s not jump to conclusions before the movie takes flight on 12 August, 2016.

Nintendo breathes life into Zelda with a new edition of the game

Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 is such an event that no one related to the gaming industry wants to miss out on. From developers to publishers of games and related hardware gather at the event to showcase their latest and upcoming projects. Given the marketing opportunities the event garners, big players of the industry make highly anticipated releases.

This year’s E3 was no different, while Sony took to the stage in revealing new game trailers, Microsoft revealed their upgraded version of Xbox. Now, Nintendo has been a company famed for their Zelda Games and while they had already slashed the rumours about any revelations of their upcoming console called NX at E3, it was almost a given fact that they will be revealing their new Zelda Game.

To be fair, from the looks of it, Nintendo did not disappoint us at all. During their Tree House Live event, Nintendo announced their upcoming Zelda title named, Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Talking to GameSpot, series producer, Eiji  Aonuma explained that the game with be compatible with both Wii U and NX version (which is set to be brought out some time in 2017) and there would be no differences with the player experience.

The company also showed a brief portion of the gameplay and allowed enthusiasts to indulge in it firsthand. The protagonist Link, seems to wake up from 100 years of slumber to find the once glorious Hyrule and has been taken over by the forces of nature: trees, vines and all things wild. The world looks huge and engrossed in wilderness which the players would be able to explore, apart from this it seems the game added a few new and revamped features to the character, like climbing cliffs and picking up weapons.

The game looks visually stunning and for sure, Zelda enthusiasts would be more eager than ever to get their hands on the game which is slated to release sometime in 2017.

AAN Comics, Tinkle, Amar Chitra Katha makes it to the 27th edition of the Limca Book of Records

The second book of records in the world after Guinness Book of World Records, Limca Book of Records (LBR) had launched their 27th (2016) edition during the ’Make in India’ week, (MIIW) 2016. The book has successfully identified people who have the spirit to excel and follow their goal with single-minded passion. And Indian comic publishers have also made their entry in the 27th edition.

Tinkle got enlisted as the ‘First all-comic magazine for children’ whereas Amar Chitra Katha for its Krishna comic has been recorded as the ‘First comic book / series’. Not just the publication, the legendary cartoonist and creator of Chacha Chaudhary – Pran Kumar Sharma has been paid tributes. He passed away on 5 August, 2014. In 1994, he was chosen as one of the People of the Year by Limca Book of Records. LBR has proved that one doesn’t need to be big to get acknowledged by them.

Limca Book of Records 2016 AAN ComicsThe indie comic publisher AAN Comics has been recognised as the ‘First comic series on War Heroes’. LBR acknowledged AAN Comics for its initiative to create awareness about courage, valour and daring of the unknown brave soldiers and their contribution for the country through illustrated stories.

AAN Comic, founder, Rishi Kumar says, “Getting recognised by the Limca Book of Records was totally unexpected. One of my contacts told me about it and I applied for the records. LBR got back to me asking for details and proofs of my work.” The entire process took about a year and happened over the email and after verifying everything, LBR decided to honour AAN Comics by listing them in the LBR 2016.”

The annual publication that’s been around for 27 years has around 20 chapters that are more or less constant every year. Literature happens to be one of them. That is the chapter that AAN Comics has already been featured in as the ‘First Comic Series on War Heroes’ in the 2016 edition.

To know more about the procedure, we got in touch with Limca Book of Records, senior editor, Arthy Singh who explains, “People usually apply to us throughout the year or we get in touch with them if we come across something that seems to be record-worthy. The cycle for each year is 1 July to 30 June.”

By this, it means that all records that have been attempted from 1 July of any particular year upto 30 June the following year, will be considered for the coming edition of LBR. So for the 2016 edition, all records that were attempted from 1 July, 2014 up to 30 June, 2015 were taken into consideration.

As for the verification, “It goes on through the year. The four in-house editors take the call for 90 per cent of the entries. We do have experts in various fields to help out too.”

Not just the comic publishers and artists, this time a cafe also got listed in the LBR. It’s none other than the Leaping Windows cafe that’s set in Versova, Mumbai. It’s been recognised as the ‘First Comic Book Library’ as it’s not merely a cafe with a full menu, free wi-fi but is also a library with a collection of over 4,000 comic books that can be read by the hour or borrowed through a membership plan which delivers books to your home anywhere in Mumbai.

AAN Comics along with Amar Chitra Katha, Tinkle and Leaping Windows getting listed in the Limca Book of Records is heartwarming to observe the indie comic space getting recognition. This would help the india space to grow and reach out to the masses at a faster pace.

It would be interesting to see who gets listed in next year’s Limca Book of  Records, so if you think your work can make it to the LBR list, go ahead and apply soon.Limca Book of Records comic 2016
