Really excited to be contributing to 3DArtist magazine – issue 93 has an in-depth piece on taking your ZBrush skills to the next level. I interviewed a bunch of artists who do incredible work.
This was a fun interview to do for Develop with vfx artist Greg Punchatz who made armatured stop motion models to be photographed and used as reference for the sprite CG models in the original Doom.
Nolan Bushnell has been one of the most celebrated personalities in the world of gaming since decades. He co-founded Atari with Ted Dabney in 1972 and under its banner, pioneered arcade classics like Pong, Breakout and Adventure. The company further launched video game consoles and home computers. Their efforts helped shape the gaming and entertainment industry near late 90s.
Now, at the age of 73, the ‘father of modern video games’, as Bushnell is often referred to, is all set to mark his debut into the mobile gaming industry. He has recently signed a three game deal with the Netherland based Spil Games, who will be taking charge as both developers and publishers.
It is already clear that the mobile gaming sector is currently experiencing colossal growth, which is expected to only grow in near future. More and more entities are investing time, efforts and capital in this booming sector.
On his arrival into the mobile gaming industry, Bunshell commented, “The future of gaming has a very strong mobile component. It’s where most people play games and it’s where the technology and ideas are developing most quickly.”
He also revealed as why he chose Spil Games to collaborate with, “I talked to them and decided that they had a corporate culture that was very similar to Atari when I was leaving — great people with a fun attitude. They’ve got really good stuff, great analytics and a really good understanding of marketplaces.”
Spil Games seemed to be content with their deal with Bunshell as their CEO, Tung Nguyen-Khac said, “We’re stoked to be working with Nolan and feeding off his energy and creativity.”
Spil Games is based in the Netherlands and has over 100 million monthly active users and focuses primarily for casual games. And with the gaming industry veteran Bushnell coming into the picture, we can expect some remarkable games coming out of the studio.

One of the most popular and influential comic strip in the history of United States that recently got itself a movie and did a phenomenal job at the box office office will now once again spread its magic on the small screen. Yes, we are talking about Charles M. Schulz’s beloved “Peanuts” characters who are headed to Boomerang next month in a series of animated shorts that will air for the first time in English.
Produced by Normaal Animation Studios for French public broadcaster France Télévisions, the 90 second shorts were first aired in 2014 in French language on French 3. Boomerang parent company Turner Broadcasting announced the deal to air the 500 shorts last fall.
As Normaal was roped in to animate this series, the series followed the 2D stop motion animation technique as it meant to please old and new fans. The 2015 The Peanuts Movie had for the first risked of coming with a 3D CGI animation even when everyone was sceptical if they would be able to pull off Schulz’s drawing style as it would have been easy to lose the ‘Peanuts’ essence in this transition. However the movie managed to garner $246.2 million at the box office and become a hit.
Getting Peanuts on the small screen in English will not only make fans relive the comic strips but will also help in reaching out to a larger audience. Peanuts will premiere Monday, 9 May, on Boomerang, with new episodes debuting daily at 11:30 am ET / 8:30 am PT. Viewers will be able to catch a sneak peek on Cartoon Network the week of 9 May at 10:30 am ET / PT, with select shorts also appearing on the Cartoon Network video app.
The series joins a Boomerang lineup that includes Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, Bunnicula, The Tom and Jerry Show and Wabbit. For now, Peanuts will give India a miss but we hope to witness Snoopy’s adventures in future on any one of the Turner owned channels in India – Cartoon Network, POGO or Toonami.

After mesmerising fans with clips and visuals from their much anticipated upcoming movies like Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse last year, 20th Century Fox will not be present at the Hall H of San Diego Comic-Con 2016. While the event has been one of the most favoured destinations for companies to showcase teasers and clips of their upcoming movies, in the recent past it agitated some of them as clips revealed in the event went on to be pirated and were uploaded over the internet.
Thus, the decision by Fox seems like a legitimate one. As TheWrap reported that the studio feels it cannot prevent the piracy of custom trailers and exclusive footage routinely screened for fans in attendance.
Last year, exclusive Comic-Con footage from both their movies namely Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse, were released over the internet, but they were not the only ones who went through the issue. Exclusive footages from Warner Bros’ upcoming movie Suicide Squad were also leaked online.
So what could we have expected from 20th Century Fox, if they did not back out this year?
Maybe some glimpses from their upcoming movie Assassin’s Creed, Wolverine 3 and maybe even the final Maze Runner movie.
This year, other major names will be attending the event like Sony with their upcoming Spider-Man movie or for that matter Marvel with Doctor Strange.
Although, the clips were leaked, Deadpool still managed to garner a gross amount of $760 million worldwide, so it would be safe to say that 20th Century Fox does not want exclusive content to leak.

The vigilante who employs murder, kidnapping, extortion, coercion, threats of violence, and torture in his war on crime, is finally getting his own TV series. EW reported that Marvel has ordered a spin-off starring vigilante character who made his debut in Daredevil season 2.
Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Hell’s Kitchen vigilante who’s the vengeful military veteran Frank Castle, who brings his own lethal form of justice in the neighbourhood.
With The Punisher coming into the picture, this would be the the sixth Marvel’s series ordered as part of the collaboration between Netflix and Marvel Television.
Currently, the other five series are in various stages of production: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones season 2, The Defenders (which brings together all three of those heroes, plus Daredevil).
With The Punisher coming into the picture, we can expect him to also be a part of the miniseries crossover – Defenders. The MCU has not only managed to capture the cinematic and television market but with The Punisher coming into the picture and the success of Daredevil and Jessica Jones series, it has now captured the Netflix audience as well.
The series will be based on Marvel’s comic character of the same name. In the comic space, The Punisher‘s brutal nature and willingness to kill made him a novel character in mainstream American comic books and he went on to be a part of a wave of psychologically troubled antiheroes and at the height of his popularity, was featured in three monthly publications, including The Punisher War Journal, The Punisher War Zone, and The Punisher Armory.
Netflix and Marvel are expected to publicly announce the project later Friday. As of now, the writer and executive producer for the spin-off series would be Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) who will serve as showrunner.
