Pacer

Pacer looked at the world in a way no film had before it. The geometry of the city and its construction, the artistry of Montreal’s landscape seen the hyper-prism of a camera racing through time on different dimension. Compressed imagery and physical motion combine in a never-been-seen-before kind of way. Pacer can lay claim to being the first hyperlapse film, or at the very least, to being the precursor to it’s development. It was shot on a Bolex 16mm camera in Montreal, Quebec in 1995. Shooting single frames, all the ‘effects’ are done in camera. The film’s original negative was destroyed in it’s one and only printing in 1995. That print was screened once and telecined for posterity, and the print was never projected again. The film would’ve fallen into obscurity, except for the low rez video version that was included in a VHS video magazine called Channel Zero in 1996. Other visual artists like TopherZ of the Dandelion Collective who saw that Channel Zero and began to pick up the technique, and with Guy Roland’s subsequent film, Spacer, in 2004 (later known as Kino Citius), the technique of hyperlapse took shape. The only print of the film was carefully transferred to 2K digital in 2014 and painstakingly remastered in early 2015, resulting in the version you see here.

F for Fake (1973) – How to Structure a Video Essay

If you want to make video essays, there’s no better film to study than Orson Welles’ 1973 masterpiece, F for Fake. There are a million lessons to take away from it, but today, let’s see what it has to teach us about structure. NO SPOILERS. For educational purposes only. TIE Fighter – short film

What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80s anime that’s all but vanished from Japan nowadays?
Well, I tried my best. Apologies in advance for not living up to Venus Wars standards.
Drawn and animated by yours truly over 4 years’ worth of weekends, with music by the living guitar solo Zak Rahman and sound design by up and coming audio technician Joseph Leyva. Fans of Lucasarts’ seminal 1994 TIE Fighter game may notice a few familiar sights and sounds. That “incoming missile” noise gives me horrible flashbacks to this day…

Special thanks to the good folk at Lucasfilm for encouraging people to get creative and make these kind of projects. It’s thanks to their extremely fan-friendly nature that we can enjoy IMPS: The Relentless, TROOPS, etc.

Don’t support me on Patreon, because I don’t have one! And don’t donate to my Kickstarter, because I don’t have one of those either. Instead, if you enjoyed this, give someone at your workplace, uni, school or whatever a random bar of chocolate or can or Coke or something. Seriously, it’ll probably make their day.
That would totally make my day.

輻射界 / RadianceScape

Since 2011, the 311 Earthquake in Fukushima once again woke up the world attention on the nightmare of the nuclear disaster. Until now, there is no workable solution for Japan to fix the leaking problem. The highly radiated wastewater has to be released to the Pacific Ocean and keep contaminating the marine life and in the result of damaging the whole food chain. RadianceScape is a data-visualizating sonic composition. It based on the live radiation data from the Safecast.org, a global sensor network for collecting and sharing radiation measurements, to generate an audio-visual cityscape. It appears in a point-cloud depth-mapping outlook in which the density of the radiation level is representing the visibility of the cityscape. The sonic composition is based on the captured data to generate different drone ambiance and noise. — 2014 / New Vision Arts Festival 2015 / FILE Festival
