GarageMag.com – Pop ART: Keith HARING by Robert MOY (2014)

Balloon sculptures were once the reserve of birthday-party clowns, but they’ve since become a little more serious – just ask Jeff Koons. Robert Moy, founder of The Brooklyn Balloon Company, creates elaborate balloon sculptures which amaze adults as much as children, and his success has led him to collaborate with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Deutsche Bank. As fans of his work, GARAGE asked Moy to get creative for an exclusive video. Two days and 150 glossy black balloons later… we have Moy’s recreation of Keith Haring’s iconic Five Dancing Guys (1987). Post-pop art… BANG!

TARSplay

This is my full-sized walking replica of the robot TARS from the movie Interstellar. It took 3 months to build, and was unveiled at Emerald City Comic Con (Seattle) in March 2015, where it interacted with the public and even won me the “One To Watch” award in the costume contest!

The replica uses two iPads as computer readouts, and features a camera/monitor system to allow me to see in front of it. It also has an audio system, allowing me to talk to people or play sound effects. Everyone seemed enthralled by the thing, and we got a lot of love from the convention-goers. It was a great experience and I hope to lug TARS to other conventions over the course of 2015.

Designed, Built and Performed by Iain Heath.
Camera, Spotting and Direction by Guy Himber.
Additional Camera and Spotting by Isabella Heath.

Booooooom + Tangible Interaction x IAM Weekend: LINE SEGMENTS TIME-LAPSE

Last month we launched a project to build a sculpture in Barcelona, at the IAM Festival, using pencils mailed in from all over the world. We collaborated with Vancouver-based studio Tangible Interaction to 3D-print special connectors that would allow us to connect the pencils together in a variety of ways. It was a pretty ambitious project considering we only had a few weeks to collect pencils and it would only work if we had lots. You guys totally came through! All in all we had well over 1,000 pencils from all over the place: North and South America, Asia, Europe, Australia, India, and Sri Lanka! Thank you all for making our project in Barcelona a success! If you sent us a pencil you can now say that you have exhibited at the Design Museum of Barcelona, that’s pretty cool! Here is a quick time lapse of festival attendees building the sculpture.
