Inspired by Pixar and Ghibli and their desire to turn animation into something real, waterMelon challenged themselves to build a 3D printed Zoetrope for the 2014 KLIK animation festival. The OctoMadness is a combination of 3D animation, 3D printing, sawing, painting and gluing every piece together. It really embodies all of the things that waterMelon loves to do. Designer and animator Klaas-Harm de Boer, wanted to create very flexible characters that show the power and freedom of animation. This zoetrope enables the audience to see each individual frame separately and gives a great insight into creating the final animation. Pictured is Tom Taylor, a Vietnam veteran who lost his left arm in combat during the war. He and his family live largely off the grid in their small hamlet near Cloudcroft, New Mexico, where Tom raised a yurt (a kind of giant teepee) to house his daughter, girlfriend and anyone in-need of a place to stay. Like many of his neighbors, Tom chooses to live without running water, internet and most of the technology Americans use readily today. He is an eccentric who searches for “the right way to live,” he says, while not giving a second thought to his disability.
