Cartier The Proposal

French jewellery company Cartier is running a Valentines Day advertising campaign, The Proposal, tying together three love stories set in Paris. The iconic Cartier jewellery box appears in three romantic proposals, at the Musée Rodin, in the lift lift at the Philharmonic Concert Hall, and at Charles de Gaulle Airport. The campaign is online at cartier.com/proposal where viewers can explore the jewellery associated with the films.

A young couple (Oisin Stack and Ana Girardot) sort out their love life in the lift. A couple (Christa Theret and Pierre Perrier) engage in a treasure hunt in the gardens of the Musée Rodin, with the prize found in front of the famous Thinker sculpture. Show the Love with A Simple Love Poem

The Climate Coalition has launched “A Simple Love Poem”, a Valentine’s Day commercial featuring British media personalities Stephen Fry, David Harewood, Alison Steadman, Deborah Meaden, Dermot O’Leary, Meera Syal, Raymond Blanc, Jarvis Cocker and Emilia Fox. The film uses Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”, to draw attention to the “Show The Love” campaign, online at fortheloveof.org.uk. Viewers are asked to ‘Show the Love’ by sharing the film, wearing green hearts and telling the world what they love that could be lost to climate change. Images promoting the campaign are being posted on the campaign Instagram site.

The film is part of a week long campaign turning Valentine hearts green. Artists, thought-leaders, millions of supporters, community leaders, students, corporates, politicians, craftivists will make public declarations to show their love in the face of climate change. The Climate Coalition’s ‘Show the Love’ campaign aims to make sure that the government and big business know that the public cares about climate change and expects them to make Paris a pivotal moment in tackling it. The campaign aims to show politicians who are embarking on a general election campaign that tackling climate change is important to us because it will affect the things we love most, like our lifestyles, our children’s futures, our hobbies, passions, safety and well-being.

Stephen Fry Diverse Communities

Oxfam Supporter, Stephen Fry “Climate change is already happening yet not a lot is going on when it comes to doing something about it. When you think about losing what you love because of climate change, it’s a no-brainer to want to see things change for good. It’s time our world felt the love. We need to stop climate change so that the things we love are not lost.”

RSPB Supporter Alison Steadman, “One of the many things I love but stand to lose are bees. They are SO small but SO vital – if we lose them, it would be devastating. The world would be far less colourful, far more hungry and the cost of replacing their service would be billions. It’s Valentine’s Day let’s not lose the things we love most, especially the birds and bees!”.

Sonnet 19

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st;
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

There are many good textbooks and courses where you can be introduced to machine learning and maybe even learn some of the most intricate details about a particular approach or algorithm. While understanding that theory is a very important base and starting point, there are many other practical issues related to building real-life ML systems that you don’t usually hear about. In this talk I will share some of the most important lessons learned in years of building the large-scale ML solutions that power the Netflix product and scale to millions of users across many countries. I will discuss issues such as model and feature complexity, sampling, regularization, distributing/parallelizing algorithms, or how to think about offline vs. online computation.
