It's not too late to make a difference | Jonathan Sackner-Bernstein | TEDxBrussels

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It’s not too late to make a difference

Jonathan Sackner-Bernstein is a heart doctor with a background in electrical engineering. He innovated within the Food and Drug Administration and was recently invited by DARPA to serve as a consultant to their new Biological Tactics Office. His career as an academic cardiologist was anything but traditional, and led to international recognition as a medical researcher for pioneering work for congestive heart failure in particular, cardiovascular health in general and the design and conduct of medical trials.

Jonathan was recruited to the Food and Drug Administration, where as Associate Center Director, he led both safety and innovation programs within the Center for Devices and Radiological Health. While at the FDA Jonathan forged relationships with outside partners such as the X Prize Foundation and DARPA, and launched the FDA’s Entrepreneurs-in-Residence program as the first to be co-sponsored by the White House. His influence at the FDA shaped a series of outward-looking initiatives with a view to looking beyond current regulatory frameworks to a new generation of connected, innovative medical devices.

Jonathan is the founder and CEO of ExVivos, established to foster development and use of medical products. ExVivos catalyzed relationships between the NIH, DARPA and pharmaceutical industry in support of tissue-engineered platforms for drug development as a potential replacement for animal testing. This research is at the forefront of current practice and represents the most progressive way of inventing new human-suitable drugs and vaccines. Recently, ExVivos conducted a comprehensive review of dietary strategies to address obesity, applying innovative statistics to determine whether standard recommendations by health authorities are the ones supported by the data. History teaches us that impact is often realized by better understanding and application of existing knowledge, the premise of this project. Following his role as Vice President for Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs at NeoStem, where he led the execution of a multi-center trial of a stem cell therapy for patients following a heart attack, Jonathan is turning his attention to the development of medical products at ExVivos.

Customizable Crossguarded LightSaber

http://www.instructables.com/id/Customizable-crossguard-lightsaber-from-The-Force-/ On Friday, November 20th, we were part of the 30 million people to keep their breath while watching the trailer for the next Star Wars movie. As designers, we were surprised to discover a new configuration of the lightsaber revealed in the now epic (and polemic) scene showing an unknown Sith Lord walking in a snowy forest. As Makers, we couldn’t help but try to find out by ourselves if this “crossguard” design was a good configuration or not… So we decided to build one, with our army of 3D printers. Of course, the “darkness” of the movie sequence and the lack of details on the weapon itself left a lot of place for imagination and interpretation. A dozen of 3D printable lightsabers being already available for download on internet, we decided to make one that would be completely customizable. The modular system we invented makes hundreds of configurations possible. From Yoda’s lightsaber to Darth Maul’s. Download all the files on our Thingiverse page or Cults (https://cults3d.com/fr/jeu/telescopic-light-saber-lefabshop), or Youmagine. I sincerely hope you’ll have as much fun building your own lightsaber than we did.

Welcome to Union Glacier

Union Glacier is located in the southern Ellsworth Mountains of West Antarctica. This is a documentary about a small team of people who live and work on the glacier during the Antarctic summer. In 2013 I was the filmmaker attached to the Scott Expedition – the journey that completed Captain Scott’s final, ill-fated expedition from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again. Our team passed through Union Glacier Camp on route to the starting point of Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans, but after becoming stranded at the camp and working with the staff there; I decided to make this documentary. For me, this film seems a bit like an antithesis to many expedition and adventure documentaries. There is no great achievement or record broken, nor any real challenge to overcome. Instead it concerns minor details; the everyday tasks of the staff that were made more special by the environment surrounding them. And in fact, I think that’s what attracted me to make this film – the delightful trivialities of an average life, working in Antarctica. If you’re interested, you can see all the short films I made for the Scott Expedition here – http://studiocanoe.com/expeditions/

Facebookers

Are you addicted to facebook? are you just annoyed by certain facebook users? if so then this film is for you. Facebookers: A short film with a group of creative people. This idea came to me when I was taking time out creativity and at a point when I was in no rush to make another short film. But what attracted me to the idea was that I could shoot it in 1 day, it would be one location, natural lighting and the perfect opportunity to work with some great people. I wrote the script within a couple of days but with the idea that some scenes could be improvised. Some of the actors I had seen in other shorts and I knew they could bring a lot more comedic elements to it. I hope you enjoy this little experiment, it was a really fun shoot and it felt like being a kid again, no pressure just a bunch of people having a good time.
