Preview: Wolfgang Laib in Season 7 of ART21 "Art in the Twenty-First Century" (2014)

In this preview from the ART21 “Art in the Twenty-First Century” Season 7 episode, “Legacy,” artist Wolfgang Laib discusses the role of pollen in his work. The artist is seen installing “Pollen from Hazelnut” (2013) at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2013—sifting hazelnut pollen collected by the artist since the mid-1990s. “I don’t want to explain to somebody what pollen is,” says the artist. “That is the secret and the beauty and the power and the potential of all this.”

Inspired by the teachings of the ancient Taoist philosopher Laozi, by the modern artist Brancusi, and the legacy of formative life experiences with his family in Germany and India, Wolfgang Laib creates sculptures that seem to connect that past and present, the ephemeral and the eternal. Working with perishable organic materials (pollen, milk, wood, and rice) as well as durable ones that include granite, marble, and brass, he grounds his work by his choice of forms—squares, ziggurats, and ships, among others. His painstaking collection of pollen from the wildflowers and bushes that grow in the fields near his home is integral to the process of creating work in which pollen is his medium. Laib’s attention to human scale, duration of time, and his choice of materials give his work the power to transport us to expected realms of memory, sensory pleasure, and contemplation.

RBMA 'Terri Hooley'

During the 1970’s, Northern Ireland was seen as a musical wasteland. Bands struggled to get recognition and found it difficult to be heard because of geography and politics. There were few outlets for people to go to hear new music and socialise in a worry free environment. Terri Hooley changed all that. In the late 1970’s Terri opened up the record shop “Good Vibrations” on the most bombed street in Europe at the time. The record shop was a major focal point for the local music scene. Inspired by the people he met through the shop and the talent he saw in Belfast, he set up a label of the same name. The label went on to release music from numerous bands from the Belfast punk and ska scene. A self confessed, “terrible businessman” Terri oversaw the shop open and close 11 times and the label never really generated much income. Despite all that, Terri kept going. A colossus of the music scene in Northern Ireland, Terri Hooley is a living legend. Without Terri, many punk bands would have remained unheard of during the Troubles. Terri’s bravery and dogged determination ensured that this would not be the case. He sparked a punk revolution that put Belfast back on the musical map. We spent a weekend with Terri in his beloved city of Belfast. He showed us around some of his old haunts and shed new insights on his life in music. For a 65 year old man, Terri still has the energy and enthusiasm of a young punk. Client: Red Bull Director: Ross Killeen Producer: Ellen Kenny Camera Operator: Albert Hooi Editor: Joe Rigby

Time Travel Winners

Tue 21st Oct 2014, by Mike Hepburn | Eventcoverage

The Winners of THE FOUNDRY and CGSociety’s Time Travel Challenge have been chosen and you will find the results below.

The year is 2055 and the impossible just became possible.

Galaxy-wide technology giant, The Foundry, called a press conference last night to announce a universe-changing product innovation due for release in 2 months time.

The new product, codenamed ‘TIME’, manipulates the spatial continuum and enables users to travel back and forth from one era to another, without any restrictions.
You are part of an inner circle that has been trusted by The Foundry with restricted additional information about this top secret project. You have exclusive knowledge of how this new invention works, what it looks like and what it’s capable of.

Your mission, is to convince the public that TIME will change their lives and that The Foundry is the only company that should be trusted with this type of significant leap in technology, before the competition attempts to counter strike.

You must use MODO 801 to visualize the product ‘TIME’ and/or create a consumer friendly advertisement to sell this groundbreaking technology to the masses.

Judges’ Comment:

Super clean and sci-fi, it just had that look that made me want to try it. – Harald Belker

Artist’s Comment:

Since the judging process was taking so long I guessed my chances were very low… and I had low expectations. I stopped myself from watching updates on the site.

So, I was working as usual on my computer and started to receive emails on my phone, and went into Hotmail on my computer to see one in particular but not this one… imagine my surprise when I saw that I was selecting this email for DELETION! Because I didn’t have you (Mike from CGSociety)as a contact and I don’t often read the email subjects! Especially when the email started with CONGRATULATIONS and I thought maybe another spam email telling me to click somewhere to claim a fake prize or something.

Then I focused and read the whole subject… and I realized!… NO WAY!… I won!?… NO WAAAAY!… and right now I’m alone at home since we are moving to México City ( I live now in Córdoba Argentina) and my wife (pregnant) and my boy (3 years old) are in Mexico right now… and they don’t know yet!!!! So, I am alone in my house reading the email and I scream!!! I WONNNNN!!!!! I WONNNNN!!!! To nobody but the dog and myself!!! That’s amazing!!!! My hands are still trembling while I write this to you and I can’t say it to anyone!!! hahaahahahah it’s amazing guys…

I can’t tell you how great this is right now… I can’t afford a licence for modo and now I won one!!!!! You have no idea… Thank you all!!!!!!

Judges’ Comment:

Great 3D, modeling and sculpting is really solid. The shading and rendering is great. Really funny piece too. So it was technically really good and conceptually really good. – Brad Peebler

Artist’s Comment:

Ha, how do i feel? Great!!! I’ve been tracking the CGSociety Challenges for many years. But i’ve never had the guts to participate. When the time travel challenge came up and i saw that the main app had to be modo, i decided to join, because Modo is by far my favorite 3d application. And now i have won in the print category. Just Awesome. I’m definitely gonna participate in future CGCchallenges.

Artist’s Comment:

I would like to thank my family, friends, vfx and animation mentors, colorists and sound designers, and cast and crew who helped with my submission.

Thank you CG Society and The Foundry for the opportunity to compete in this challenge. The other submissions were amazing. I imagine it was very difficult for the judges to pick winners, so I’d like to thank them for their time and effort as well.

A special thanks to Chaos Group for giving me the opportunity to use V-Ray for Modo. My experience with Modo has changed the way I think about motion graphics and visual effects. Their products are the easy and fun way to model, uv, texture, rig, animate and render in 3d for film, TV, broadcast, and commercial work.

Judges’ Comments:

This answered to brief and then some! Great fun, clever and memorable – Tim Cooper

The production value was great all throughout. The story was solid and funny and the 3D component was nicely executed at the end. – Brad Peebler
