A rickety scientific expedition ventures down the Amazon River to a dark lagoon, in search of a mythic Creature! But the Creature, it seems, has a less than mythic agenda! MONSTRO! is a horror story. A love story. A ribald comedy!

Loon Games debuts with ‘Jello Quest’

A new game studio start-up based out of Navi Mumbai called Loon Games recently launched its first casual game for the Android and iOS platform on 7 June. The game called ‘Jello Quest’ takes one back to the evergreen ‘Pac Man’, which has similar mechanics, but this works on motion sensors as well.

Speaking on the game to AnimationXpress.com Loon Games founder Aditya Kulkarni says: “We were very clear before starting that it would be a casual game which folks will play for just 4-5 minutes while travelling or just chilling, thus the mechanics had to be fairly easy.”

The game requires one to tilt his/her device and help Jello collect all the squishy jellybeans. One can also use defense power to protect Jello from danger. Use attack power to destroy obstacles to oblivion! ‘Jello Quest’ features exciting physics and hours of fun gameplay.

Kulkarni adds: “The current edition features 60 levels and the game has been completely made by Paresh from the team, and given a great artwork by Sudhir. The music is by Kevin Macleod and it took us nearly three months for the complete development.”

Being an indie developer is slowly getting tougher, now even mobile advertising coming under service tax, sharing his views on the same Kulkarni laments: “It’s really tough being a start up to break-even on most occasions, and now with service tax being levied on mobile advertising, it’s going to make monetizing a tad bit more difficult.”

The game currently has over 1,200 downloads on both iOS and Android within a month. The studio is also working on creating a few more games in the coming months.

Aries Group’s BizTV stakes claim of Mohan Lal’s Vismayas Max Studios

The United Arab Emirates-based BizTV has taken over Vismayas Max Studios, Kerala’s first Digital theatre sound (DTS) studio, which was set up by the Malyalam film actor Mohan Lal.

BizTV is part of the Aries Group of Companies, which has taken the reigns of the respected production company. With the acquisition, Lal’s production firm will now be known as Aries-Vismayas Max.

“Through Aries-Vismayas Max project we are opening the doors of international movie/TV/advertisement market to the India Film/Media community,” said Aries Group CEO Sohan Roy in a statement.

According to a press release issued by both parties, Aries-Vismayas will become the largest film and TV studio in south India.

Using the global clout of Aries, Roy hopes that it will give the Aries-Vismayas Max label a worldwide reach that it previously never had. The company has a determined plan to reach even more viewers than before. Mohan Lal will continue as the brand ambassador of the company.

Vismayas is currently situated in Kinfra Film and Video Park, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It deals in animation, pre and post-production work, and caters to more than 100 Indian movies in various languages.

BizTV Network is a renowned media company with three 3D movies, two Global TV channels and hundreds of international advertisements; the company even has 20 Academy Award-qualified productions to its name.

FutureWorks helps ‘Arima Nambi’ roar at the box-office

The VFX studio is really busy delivering project after project, this time a film down south for the debutant director Anand Shankar’s ‘Arima Nambi’ (Trust The Lion). The director has earlier assisted acclaimed director and writer AR Murugadoss.

Speaking to AnimationXpress.com, VFX supervisor for Arima Nambi B Sasikumar says: “FutureWorks have delivered 700 plus VFX shots for the film, which include explosions, monitor composites, green screen composites and some cleanups as well.”

Since the project required a lot of attention and detailed work; both the Mumbai and Chennai outfits, comprising of over 150 artists, were involved in delivering the feature in just about four months.

“The most challenging sequence in the film was to get the explosion inside the flat right. It was an integral part of the movie and had to be believable visually. We had to recreate all the props inside the flat as all of them had to integrate seamlessly with the explosion,” Saikumar expounds.

Some of the other sequences which required some detailing included a tyre blasting where the tyre was recreated using CGI and matched to the lighting conditions of the shot. “There was also another important shot which required us to create 50-60 monitor content, specially designed and animated to convey the storyline and meet the director’s requirements to show an investigation,” he adds.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay, who is busy shooting for ‘Kaththi’ seems to have recently watched Vikram Prabhu-Priya Anand starrer ‘Arima Nambi’ and was all praise for the feature to AR Murugadoss, who conveyed the star’s message through a tweet that read: “Vijay sir said ARIMA NAMBI is outstanding… congrats ANAND SANKAR… feeling Exhited to watched it tomo.”

Produced by Kalaipuli S Danu, the movie starring Vikram Prabu, Priya Anand in the lead roles has music by Sivamani and released on 4 July across India. On the association with Shankar, Sasikumar says: “The director was very clear in what he wanted from us and the project met all the deadlines without any hiccups. It was great associating with Anand for his debutant venture.”

Ikea Beds in the Sky

IKEA has launched “Beds”, a television commercial focusing on how the perfect bed can help us start the day the right way. Set thousands of feet above the city, the ad tells the story of a woman’s dream as she moves from one uncomfortable bed to another until she eventually finds the perfect bed: the bed that she wakes up in at home each morning. The ad’s script is an excerpt from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, read by English actress Prunella Scales. “Beds”, the third instalment of The Wonderful Everyday campaign looks at the spaces in the home where our days begin and end: the bedroom and the bathroom.

Sound was designed by Sam Ashwell at 750mph.

Visual Effects – Behind The Scenes

The “Beds” protagonist, Max the dog and many of the beds were hung from cranes and suspended over buildings during the 3-day shoot in Johannesburg.

The VFX team at MPC (Moving Picture Company) collaborated with film director Juan Cabral and advertising agency Mother London to create a detailed matte paintings, adding CG beds and embellishments and compositing elements including the NASA rocket and plume.

Led by 2D Creative Director Bill McNamara, MPC’s 15-strong team utilized the innovative filming techniques – which captured a great deal of the action in-camera – to then create the VFX and embellish the shots. In order to build the bed staircase, Ikea beds were filmed against green screen on the ground.

The following sequence used an 80-foot weighted crane and controlled drop to allow the beautiful actress to literally plummet from the sky – thereby perfectly capturing her emotion as she falls.

A selection of the wide shots were created by filming a skydiver and removing the parachute pack, while many of the shots were filmed against green screen with the sky and various surroundings composited in the studio.

MPC’s Global Creative Director of Colour Grading Jean-Clément Soret completed the grade, establishing a soft, dream-like look.

Adobe CMO Stats

The bevy of elegant and sometimes surprising transitions that pepper this explainer video for Adobe never upstage the real star of the video: the red dot representing CMOs. That dot is as full of personality as the video is full of stats.

This project is a follow-up to a previous explainer from VeracityColab introducing Adobe’s CMO.com web property.

These projects have put VeracityColab on my radar.

Pearson English: “One”

Although the script is a bit on the dry side, this explainer video from Territory kept my attention with its whimsical cel work and cheerful palette.
