Madesmith presents ETWAS Bags

BUILT TO LAST, OLD SCHOOL CRAFTSMANSHIP – WILL LISAK OF ETWAS. Something modern, something simple, something pleasing, and something made to last for a really, really long time, that’s what Will Lisak creates for his line Etwas (meaning “something” in German). Will’s leather bags and accessories are well-designed, durable, and made completely by hand without using any electricity or plastics. Growing up on a farm in Western Pennsylvania, Will spent a lot of time in the woods and the idea of creating what they needed from the natural materials around them is deeply rooted in his mentality. Everything he creates is made from materials that are natural and sustainable. Since materials he uses do not require a lot of industrial processing, it means that each product that he makes has a unique personality and it’s designed to live and age gracefully over time. “There is poetry in the act of caring for or fixing a thing that you know will be with you forever, if only you love it enough” he says. Disney and Marvel’s first animated venture, Big Hero 6’s trailer is out!

From the creators of Frozen and Wreck it Ralph!, Walt Disney Animation studios is coming up with Big Hero 6 this 7 November (USA). It’s an American 3D computer-animated superhero film, inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero team with the same name.

This is the first animated alliance stuck between Marvel and Disney. Big Hero 6 is an action comedy adventure, set in the high-tech city of San Fransokyo, and revolves around Hiro and Baymax, and their team of first-time crime fighters.

The trailer released on 15 July, and has really created a lot of buzz around this co-venture between two mighty players in the industry. The music is really great and the trailer just about gives out the story, but leaves one asking for more. The character ‘Baymax’ is really likable and will certainly strike a chord with the kiddies, who will drive their folks to flock to the theatres on 7 November (US).

The CG-toon features the voices of Ryan Potter as Hiro, Scott Adsit as Baymax, along with Jamie Chung, T.J. Miller, Alan Tudyk, Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell and Damon Wayans Jr. Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh). Chris Williams (Bolt) is the director, with Roy Conli (Tangled) as the producer of the film.

Neel Sethi to reprise the role of ‘Mowgli’ in new Disney feature

Walt Disney nowadays is making a routine of taking some of its better-remembered animated classics and breathing new life into them by developing new live-action versions of the classic films.

One of its most victorious efforts has been the live-action origin story of the Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent.

Disney is currently in the process of trying to evoke some of that same magic from the classic tale of a boy raised in the jungle with their live-action version of The Jungle Book.

Finally, the search for ‘Mowgli’ in the adaptation has come to an end, with the 10-year-old Indian origin boy, Neel Sethi set to swing from tree to tree on the big screen, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Sethi, a novice from New York, will portray the young boy who is raised by jungle animals in the film, which would be helmed by Jon Favreau and scripted by Justin Marks.

The last Jungle Book film, also by Disney, was an animation, all characters, and had a double release in India; the second was a dubbed version in Hindi.

In addition to Kingsley, Avengers actress Scarlett Johansson has been brought on to play the role of Kaa and Thor: The Dark World actor Idris Elba has been brought on to play the villainous Shere Khan.

Neel will be the only human in the film; all other characters – such as Bagheera, the leopard; Shere Khan, the tiger; Kaa, the python; and Baloo, the bear – will be CGI.

The Jungle Book is scheduled to be released on 9 October, 2015.

The Square Peg Films: An end to end video production agency

Video consumption on varied platforms; be it online, TV, outdoor or other mediums, is constantly on the rise and when there is a requirement there needs to be someone or something working towards fulfilling it. Here is where a small start-up going by the name The Square Peg Films (TSPF) comes to mind.

TSPF co-founders Praveen Sharma and Pooja Mishra open up to AnimationXpress.com on their work, the thought of beginning a start-up and really being open to associating with anyone and everyone.

“Firstly let me clarify, we are not just an animation film studio, we are more of an end to end video production agency if we can say so,” explains Pooja. The company began operations in August last year and in a span of nearly 10 months has over 20 short films, TVCs, videos, infomercials, etc to its credit.

Praveen adds: “The thought of starting our own venture was to cater to the need of friendly production houses, which I feel is lacking. Our USP is that we don’t focus on any one particular area, and our creative as well as marketing prowess really helps us score over other leading houses.”

The core team comprises of 13 guys operating from different areas in Mumbai along with freelancers coming in on a project to project basis. “I truly believe that less number of people working on one assignment leads to a much better focused approach on a finished product,” reveals Praveen.

TSPF has worked with some really well known brands like: MTS, Rediff, Thomas Cook, Puma, Oakley, Aegis, among others. “We can’t really be choosy as this stage and just want to do great work; we approach each video very differently and treat it as per the brief and our creative understanding with a very unique message. Money is not the only answer, for a start-up nothing matters more than just completing the first three projects,” he exults.

The company has already recovered its initial investments, and on the completion of a year soon will look at expanding not only in terms of assignments on board but also in terms of the workforce. “I believe what has really helped us grow is the fact that we have never said no to anyone, be it a client having only a few thousands to spend or a big brand willing to shell out even a few lakhs,” Pooja adds.

The idiom square peg in a round hole really does resonate well with The Square Peg Films, but it certainly is no misfit when it comes to delivering quality work for its clients. “We invest time in associating with people to try our services and then they themselves come back to us on the basis of our dedication and commitment. The market for videos of all kinds is really improving and people are more open to exploring different ways in which videos can be used to communicate their message,” both Praveen and Pooja end.

Vimanika Comics is not just mythology, it’s ancient India: Karan Vir Arora

With over seven years of experience in the training industry, young and vibrant Karan Vir Arora brings with him the techniques needed to impart knowledge to the readers. His comic book not just provides you entertainment but educates you at the same time.

Vimanika Comics mainly creates stories based on characters related to the Indian mythology. “There is hardly anyone in the comic industry that has got into mythology. Nowadays people try to create very classy and modern characters with no base in the story. This industry is growing, so I wanted to do something which is real, with whom the readers could connect,” said Vimanika Comics director, Karan Vir Arora.

Karan has been doing research on Indian ancient history over the past decade. His main objective is to educate his readers about not just mythology but ancient India.

“Every invasion has destroyed our history. Today’s youth doesn’t know the reality of the Harappan civilisation, only thing that they are aware of is Ramayana and Mahabharata. In order to break the myth of Aryan invasion and others I went on to connect with one of the experts on the space, in S R Rao, who discovered Dwarka and other such places to learn from and familiarise myself with the occurrences which took place over 10,000 years ago. My aim was ‘to create a trend not follow one’. India is very rich in its culture so I wanted to bring it out through my beautiful tales, with action, sexiness along with appealing graphics,” he added.

What’s interesting is that comics were not really Karan’s first love, as he wished to make animation features, but due to lack of funds, experience and knowledge of the space he ended up romancing comics instead.

“I wanted to do films first but then I decided to put my creativity into comics. I thought if Virgin comics can do Indian mythological stories sitting in UK and US then why not me.  I learnt from historians, did my research and really thought of creating something new which was authentic and at the same time brought some newness that other comics like Virgin and ACK lacked,” expounds Karan.

Vimanika would have been impossible without its team, so as Karan puts it – A bunch of talented artists and scholars have made Vimanika what’s its today. Deepam Chatterjee (writer of Dashavatar), Shail Gulati (researcher for Shiva series), N S Raja Ram (ex-scientist consultant to NASA, with 40-50 years of experience in Indian history), Amit Tayal (senior artist), Kshitish Padhey (senior writer), renowned Vedic scholar David Frawley and Mahesh Prabhu, who connected Karan to all the aforementioned.

Vimanika Comics is not just restricting itself to Indian audiences, with Shiva Vol. 1 the company is reaching out to French and German language reading audience with assistance from a Swiss based publication, Virtual Graphics.

“On an average, we manage to sell 3,000-5,000 copies per month and we will be soon launching new books on contemporary genres as well,” reveals Karan.

Sharing his thoughts on the current comic industry in India Karan says: “This industry is definitely growing, but the speed is slow. The demand for artists in this field is really high as against the supply because of which we have to hire them at astronomical prices. We also require more distributors and retailers in order to push the growth of this industry.”

And the fun for Vimanika doesn’t just stop there; it also has its very own merchandise and apparels store in Bandra, Mumbai. The comic company is also available on the digital platform through an app for Android, Windows and Blackberry platforms. “We are in talking terms with Apple as well, and will soon be launching it on iOS. The first two digital comics that the user reads will be for free, post which one will have to incur anywhere between $1.99 to $2.99 per new copy read.”
