Talking Walls – Overleie

What if walls could talk? What would the walls of Overleie (Kortrijk, Belgium) have to say? For my art project Talking Walls I give the walls a voice. The wall is situated in an old building in the city. Through little anecdotes I’ll bring the history of the neighborhood back to life. I want to know what goes on in that area and which stories are alive. To know that I’m looking for interaction with the people, inviting them to my temporary studio during the process of painting ( 2 to 3 weeks) and let them tell their story. The result is a stop motion animation depicting the different stories, giving an unique feel of the region. The purpose of the Talking walls project is to travel around Belgium and eventually the world depicting lots of different neighborhoods and cities each with their own unique history.

Metal Valley Netherlands, Gieterij Drunen [Portrait]

Portrait of Gieterij Drunen, part of the industrial area Metal Valley Netherlands. This portrait explains the meaning of the co-operation between various metal companies in the industrial area called, Metal Valley Netherlands. This is a foundry, where in this portrait the guys are busy with the melting and casting of copper for various suppliers. Gieterij Drunen is a specialist in the production of industrial hand moulded castings in non-ferrous metal, steel and stainless steel. The history behind the building of Gieterij Drunen is quite big. Formerly LIPS was one of the largest manufacturers of ship propellers in the world. I shot this portrait as a part of various interests. First of all, it is my graduation project. I had contact with the local government and the foundation behind Metal Valley Netherlands. The government had interest. The area is expanding, which means, space for more companies in the industry. The idea? Convince the industry of the value to settle at Metal Valley. The best to ask this in my opinion, are the companies who are already present.
