3d objects from maya?

when i import .obj models from 3dsmax & cinema 4d, everything looks fine.
when i attempt to import .obj files that have originated from maya, i have nothing.

is there a setting i’m missing, or is maya attempting to disrupt workflow in order to push smoke?

thanks in advance for the help.

How to merge two masks together?

Hi.
I would like to combine – merge two masks together by operation like Multiply or Screen. The problem is, when I have tried to do that by Merge node, it doesn’t work. It works well with bitmaps, but not with masks. Even when I have applied a bitmap mask between node Mask and Merge, It still doesn’t work.

What should I do for merging two masks by operators Multiply or Screen?
Thanks!

Best clothing colour to shoot against green screen?

I was just wondering because one or two of my costumes that my extras will be wearing are entirely white. Its essential that they wear these costumes.

My question is, I’ll be using the green screen. But should I try to shoot on a blue screen instead? Or have the background entirely black to pull a matte from it?

I know that in Alice in wonderland they shot most of the scenes using the greenscreen and a good amount of the actors had white on. What should I do??

Need help with a Project Please

Hi, ok so I am doing a project for my film class, which is a research paper on visual effects, and most of the information I write about needs to be from interviews (either live or e-mailed).
It occurred to me that I have not talked with an animator to get information on how animation is done or how they work with the compositor. So I was hoping that if someone had a few minutes to spare to answer some questions I have, that they could private message me and I could just ask you a few questions.
Sorry I didn’t really know if this was the "proper" spot to put this kind of request, but I figured the animation forums would be a good starting point.

Thanks!

How are you all handeling DOF and Motion Blur?

Something that has been bugging me a long time is not being able to ad both depth of field and motion blur.

Of course…you can often separate the background from the foreground and use different lens blurs on them, without the z-channel hooked up to it. And then do the motion blur with motion vectors.

Another way is rendering everything in 3d, this is often too time consuming and also you as a compositor loose a lot of control.

A third way is adding a z-depth depth of field and then using a motion blur without using motion vectors.

There are times when you would want to control motion blur and Dof in the compositing using the channels (z-depth and motion vectors). As I see it the best would be "a blur" that you can input both z and motion and steer everything from the faceting in the bokeh to the shutter speed and generate a combined blur from that.

I haven’t worked in any big post houses. So I hope that someone out there has a great work flow for doing such a thing and are willing to share there experience :). Maybe there are lots of workarounds?

Unexpected – Commercial for “Batelco Infinity”

Hi all!

Here is a new commercial we did (and now in the right category 😉 )

BATELCO “Infinity” takes you on a journey through people´s minds in a visual effects-loaded interactive film which has been causing a stir on Facebook.

At over three minutes long, the film shows several protagonists as they re-imagine the world around them, which marks the global expansion of Batelco, a leading Middle East telecom provider. Bahrain-based agency FP7/BAH teamed up with Spyfilms, Canada and City Films, Beirut, German directing duo Alex & Steffen and the german posthouse Unexpected to create this film along Batelco´s proposition of ‘Bringing ideas to life’.

After its launch on Facebook with an interactive webcam layer it soon got more than 118.000 fans and even more views – over 2000 daily new ‘likes’, an average of 83,000 daily post views, over 1 million wall impressions up to date and fans from 43 countries across the globe.

Besides one single take where the RED camera was used (the shot with the opening elevator door and the skater) the whole film was shot by New York-based DoP Simon Coull on four Canons 7D, two 5Ds and the coolest gear like Eric Austin´s small camera helicopter from www.helivideo.com.

German-based studio Unexpected Postproduction produced over 100 visual effect shots for the film, ranging from small enhancements, sky replacements, digital animals and stunt-doubles to a subway transforming into a huge rollercoaster rushing inbetween high rise buildings, F1 racers chasing each other on city streets and futuristic gliders blasting through the city canyons. A large number of those shots are 100% CG as they would have been almost impossible to get in real life!
