What, and who, are visual effects anyway?

Quote:

I recently called Jeffrey Okun, a well-respected visual effects supervisor and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Visual Effects Society (VES) to tap his brains about the state of the visual effects industry and all the wonderful technology that is fundamentally changing it at a startling pace. Jeffrey, of course, has been around since the early 1980’s and has supervised effects on many big films, including Ed Zwick’s work on “The Last Samurai” and “Blood Diamond,” among others. He’s currently in Vancouver, supervising on Catherine Hardwick’s upcoming “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Jeffrey, of course, has a deep passion for promoting the art and artists of the visual effects’ industry, and like many folks, he’s concerned about their welfare and future in a radically evolving industry on a financially unstable landscape. Rather than spending much time on technology, Jeffrey wanted to discuss what, exactly, it means to be a visual effects artist in the digital era in an increasingly globalized business. The people he calls “unsung heroes” and, sometimes, “migrant film workers” are getting caught up in, according to Jeffrey, “the opposite of the democratization of the artist. We are becoming less valued and getting less rights.”

Questions about Nuke & Object Tracking

Hi. I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with doing object tracking in Nuke? I understand this can be done on a locked shot by regarding the object tracking as a camera track. What about a moving object within a moving shot? Can it be done within Nuke, or would you have to do it externally in Pftrack/Syntheyes/etc? If so, can anyone shed any light on the basic workflow surrounding this?

A nodal track with zoom.

I’m trying to do this long tripod shot off a bridge where I zoom in on various parts of the scenery where I want to put in some 3D objects in Maya.

What would be the best way to go about doing this? Can I do a camera solve in a tracking software and then just line up the scene geometry once in Maya?

Or would it be better to make one panoramic image and do all the camera movement in software?

How would you go about a shot like this?

Moving Fusion’s default user directories?

Hi All,

I’m wondering how to move the default UserDocs and AllDocs directories Fusion automatically creates in the User\Documents directory in Windows.

I can see the paths, but cant edit them in the Fusion Preferences dialogue.

Nuke HueKeyer help

Could someone please explain to me how to use the hue keyer in nuke. I would like to know how it is usually used and tweaked. I see there are a few preset points on the curve but I am not sure how to use them. I have experimented with it and can get a basic key on a colour, but I feel I am missing something.

Thanks

Motion Blur w/ Sizzling Edges- Nuke

Hi All-

I am keying a shot using primatte and it did an awesome job so far. But I am having trouble trying to get rid of sizzling edges due to Motion Blur.

I have attached an "edge blur" node and although that helps, i still have areas where there is sufficient sizzling and popping.

Anyone have any ideas to rid of the sizzling/popping edges?

Thanks!
