Exr’s and colorspace

I’ve noted how applying a color space node to a shuffle attached to an EXR seems to give me a much darker output then when connected right to the EXR.

I’ve resorted to utilizing LUT’s to define my own color space correction by recreating the gamma correction curve with minor tweaks where needed.

My question is, are the elements within an EXR already set to linear space when you shuffle them out, and why then is the original EXR in a different color space? Perhaps it is my process of outputting EXR’s… if anyone could shed some light on this, It’d be great. The darkness kinda sucks.
