Nuke 101 book

I bought this book because I just wasn’t getting much out of the foundry’s education materials.

I’ve already encountered two mistakes in chapter 2 and one I can’t get past. Basically I have 3 files being read into merge and write/viewer, but one of the files is an RGB that only has info in the r channel.

According to the book, when I enter R into the R,G,B and A channels inside the shuffle node this should allow me to take the info from red channel and force into the alpha channel. (Since the original mask file doesn’t have an alpha, and only has info in R, not G or B).

I need this to work as it’s a part of the mask I need to finish the composite but after following the instructions (listed above) and trying some things on my own, nothing happens.

Yes, this read file and shuffle are plugged into merge->write-> read->

:thanks: in advance!

Rotoscope / Demoreel

So I’ve been lurking the forums for a while and finally signed up a few days ago. I’ve had a few projects for fun, watched more tutorials than TV in my entire life, and have a degree in New Media (B.FA). So I’m not a complete idiot at least…

I had a recent project I was using the CS4 AE – Mocha plugin to try and rotoscope a complex object in a fairly long scene, using the Mocha Tracking, and then export that into AE as a Mask/Matte. Unfortunately, due to having only CS4 apparently (and the Mocha plugin, not full) what I was trying to accomplish was not possible.

So I figured since I was only learning fundamentals in AE (which I basically already knew, due to my Uni Degree), I would give Nuke a shot in terms of Rotoscoping. Ultimate goal here: Get a rotoscope artist job sometime in the next year.

I’m still getting familiar with Nuke and node-based compositing, but was wondering if it works more as a whole package, rather than a “plugin” for basic rotoscoping. For instance, instead of rotoscoping in Mocha and importing to AE… do I just rotoscope in Nuke, and save file? heh.

Sorry, lengthy thread but… my last question is a quick one about creating a Rotoscoping Demoreel. Is it okay to use feature film footage just to demonstrate rotoscoping ability? For instance, grab a scene from a movie, rotoscope, show alpha, Rinse-repeat x3, Tada Demoreel? (In short…)

I know obviously to avoid light sabers, spaceships, and all that cliche nonsense… but I’ve also read to avoid “stock footage”. What consists of “stock footage”?

Thanks (especially if you read that entire thread. wow. sorry.)

(Req)digital tutors-Depth Map Layering in Nuke 6

hi friends… am training in nuke….i need tutorial for”digital tutors-Depth Map Layering in Nuke 6″i am searching this tutorial last 6 months..i checked, free link is not there.. please help me..

In this series of lessons we’ll learn how to combine depth maps to create correct layering between two renders. This allows us to split out scenes into multiple render layers while keeping the correct pixels on top.

We’ll begin by taking a look at what is depth-based compositing or layering and why we would want to use it. Then we’ll learn about some of the downsides of using this technique. We’ll then dive in to Nuke and create a matte for our foreground layer using it’s depth map and the background depth map. We’ll then learn how to work with depth maps including combining maps from different scene scales, using depth-based layering to fix interpenetration issues and making depth maps human readable and error-free.

1. Introduction and Project Overview

3. Basic depth compositing in Nuke

5. Fixing interpenetration issues with depth compositing

2. What is Depth-based Compositing?

4. Dealing with different depth scales and values

6. Tone mapping and fixing incorrect depth image

please helpme….

Snapping in roto/paint tool

Is there any way to disactivate snapping when you transform a roto spline. Its very annoying particularly in rotation.
I can disactivate it temporarly by pressing alt key while i rotate, but i m looking for a permanent solution

Merge Node compared to Layer

Hi,

I am transiting from AE to Nuke however i am having some dificulties fully understanding the merge nodes in Nuke.

I know this have been answered couple times now i guess however i couldn’t find anything while comparing it to the layers (specificly for the merge nodes)

… its a bit confusing for me atm working with more than 2 or 3 merges- any tips?

Thanks allot

Tracking a RotoPaint (Clone) stroke in NukeX

Hi all,

Newbie to Nuke, but going through the DigitalTutors and FXPHD lessons, so I’ve got a basic understanding.

I’m trying to clone paint over a moving tracking marker (using the same source footage), but can’t seem to get the clone stroke to lay over the marker once I track it.

I’ve tracked it fine, and created an initial clone stroke that covers it on frame 1. Set the clone lifetime to ‘all’, and made sure I’m working on the clone stroke layer, not the ‘root’ layer.

When I try to copy the animated track keyframes over to the clone stroke transform, the stroke tracks the movement fine, but resets into the upper right hand corner of the screen, so it’s offset the entire time. If I try to adjust the ‘center’, I still can’t get the close stroke to overlay over the marker correctly.

I’ve actually got 4 tracking markers (will have eight in some scenes) that I’ll need to do this with, each with their own individual clone strokes.

Anyone know how to correctly track a clone stroke over a tracking marker? Obviously the clone ‘source’ pick will need to track with it.

Trying to do this at least once so I can apply to the others.

Any quick help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks much!

Is out there andrew kramer for nuke?

Hi, i am very much into the amateur VFX world BUT using AE till now simply because of nuke is much more expansive.. However very lucky for me, i have a very rich uncle who bought me full nukeX with every plugin included expect ocula 🙂

However past the yeas andrew kramer at videocopilot.net helped allot by showing tutorials how to do awesome movie effects using AE with step by step tutorial..

So my question is is there andrew kramer for nuke :P? All i have found are eaither very simple or very complicated tutorials- actually techniques where do not show you the full effect ..

i look for some effects like this
creating explosion
replicating the mumia face
hitting a man with car
shooting
duplicating more people on one scene
time freeze
jedi fight
etc etc..

– these are all old and somehow basic stuff but however these kind of tutorials should move us to a whole diferent level in nuke for us the newbies

So i hope there is some rich resource for nuke as well.

Cause watchig tutorials like that you get the grasp of the concepts and ideas howto work on that platform, much faster, better and more fun ofc.

thanks allot!

Nuke roto trackin question

Hi

Nuke noob question
Ive been trying to follow along with a tut from this site, and I keep runnin into an issue. The tut says to create a track, and then attach it to a garbage mask, but every time I do this, it moves the garbage mask off.

See attached. The tut doesn’t really explain this well, or at least it didn’t happen for him. Im using 6.1…with the root tool. Hes using 5.2, with the bezier tool. Is that my problem?
