parent lights and objects together in layout

ive used scene editor to try and do this and cant make it work. ive tried using a null object and cant make it work either. it seems so simple, to select all objects and lights, and then parent them together, but i cant for the life of me figure it out.

my REAL problem is that i have imported camera data from PFTrack into my LWS, and need to reposition the camera. but when i do that, it only repositions the camera for one frame, then it moves back to it’s original position for the remainder of the frames.

so i either need to move the actual object with the lights to where i want it, or figure out a way to move the camera for all frames.

tracking in lightwave

ok, i tracked a scene in pftrack and exported it out as a lws file.

now what?

im in lightwave, and i see the camera with all of the blue tracking dots in front of it, but the camera isn’t parented to these dots, nor does anything happen when i hit play on the preview portion. i’ve loaded my 3d environment but now have absolutely no idea how to merge that with my footage from pftrack.

thanks in advance for the help.

lw10 linear workflow and exrTrader

Hello,
I am a lightwave/nuke user and when I render exr’s out of lightwave they appear to still be in sRGB despite the linear colorspace settings in layout. I know this because my exr’s appear to be washed out and lifted until I switch my colorspace in nuke to sRGB, then they look fine. They should look correct in a linear colorspace. Anyone know if there’s a 2.2 gamma adjustment that LW applies to its renders before they get written?

Zoom factor / high ISO rendering of shopping cart silhouette

Hi!

I’m trying to redo in LW so I can give it an interesting 3D angle, kinda like – equivalent to high ISO on digital cameras I’d reckon.

I remember getting a similar effect years ago by increasing the zoom factor on my camera, which would bring the object in closer, and then I’d move the object away and it’d get all these sweet crazy angles. But now I’m not getting that. Have I forgotten something?

Would appreciate design advice / directions as well.

Many thanks!

Weighter 2

Alexandre Labedade is about to release his Weighter 2 plugin. It transfers vertex maps from one object to another, weight and colour maps, UVs and morphs. Similar to Gator in Softimage.

FREE – Battlestar Galactica Camera Movement Tutorial

We all know LightWave was used on Battlestar Galactica. We all love the series and have seen the ground breaking camera movements.

KURV studios is giving a free webinar featuring Kelly Myers aka Kat. Kelly has worked on Battlestar for years… creating amazing shots from space battles to ship fly through shots. Kelly will be doing a three part series on the ground breaking visual effects.

This is the first webinar in this three part series, and it is FREE!

Space is limited to 900 viewers so don’t delay, register now!

We will release a video of the class after for viewing online but this class will be your only opportunity to see Kelly working in person and ask him questions in person.

You can view more on Kat and his work on Battlestar here – http://www.battlestarvfx.com/

rope rig on the mac?

Hi guys,

Newcomer so be nice! I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to create a rope rig? The idea is this rope / lanyard is attached to a workman as he surveys a roof (exciting no?).

I have tried using spline control, but then have to laboriously animate each point, then bake the animation out, only to find its not looking right etc.

Any help or ideas would be great.

Cheers

Paul

Making objects emit light? Need some help.

I’ve had this nagging question in my mind for years. How do I get geometry to emit light? light bulbs, street lights, car head lights, flash lights, ceiling lights, luminous dials and switches. Custom stuff. I ask because this seems like such a basic concept and I feel like I flew past it at some point. Do objects that require that part them emit light into a scene truly have to be rigged and parented in Layout, or can this be (or should this be) done in Modeler?

I’m not talking about having these lights light the whole scene, just add to it.

It’s this subtle kind of lighting that I can’t seem to find a tutorial on.

Recently, I’ve glanced at some tutorials on Luxigons. Is this the right path? Point me in the direction!

Rigging Error

A friend of mine who is an animation student created some characters for me this , and he did a fantastic job. But one of the models is not properly rigged. I will post some screen caps, although I’m not sure how to show what’s wrong with it in screen caps. I will pay someone $50 via paypal if they can fix this model and properly rig it for me.
