FICCI-EY report: VFX grew 25% in 2019 to reach INR 49.5 billion

Storytelling is not only India’s oldest tradition but also its most significant soft power that continues to take myriad forms with VFX giving it bigger wings to soar across international skies. With the advancements taking place in VFX technologies and platforms so frequently, the entire world has trained its eyes on India’s storytellers.

More so, OTT platforms have opened up news vistas to help with global outreach. Statistics advanced by the recent FICCI report confirm the exponential growth of the India’s M & E space with VFX and post production facilities moving up the value chain. Undeniably, OTT space has been a major reason for driving that growth both in demand of post production services. Let’s look at some facts by FICCI-EY report surrounding the Indian VFX scenario.

Growth in Demand

  • VFX segment benefited due to increased demand from domestic content companies (which produced over 1,600 hours of original OTT content, 1,800+ films and over 200,000 hours of entertainment television) as well as international content companies producing ever larger amounts of content for both developed and growth markets.
  •   350 films were released in 26 countries in 2019, compared to 332 films in 18 countries in 201824, which led to increased demand for post-production services.
  •  Niche films for multiplex audiences, dubbed vernacular content and growth in digital web series, originals, etc. led to increased demand for post- production services.
  •  Broadcast post-production work witnessed modest growth as Indian companies continued to expand to multiple geographies across the world, catering to their needs from centralized facilities in India.

VFX grew 25% in 2019 to reach INR49.5 billion

Domestic market drove growth

VFX, unlike the rest of the segment, had an equal revenue split between Indian and international clients.

  • While India remained competitive on the international side, the domestic market drove most of the growth in 2019, fuelled by original content created by broadcasters and OTT platforms.
  • Some companies indicated that their domestic revenues increased over 40% from 2018 and they expected this trend to continue over the next few years.

Growth of captive centers was seen in India

  • The demand for VFX services by content creators in countries like China and India is attracting western players to set up shop in these countries to cater to the local content and creatives
  •   To get a foothold in the booming Indian market, multiple companies are either entering the Indian market or investing in setting up infrastructure in India.
  •  Framestore: An international company is set to open its offices in Mumbai in 2020.
  • DNEG has launched a new offering, ReDefine, which will be based in a new studio facility in Mumbai and will be home to more than 600 staff who will focus on offering visual effects and animation services to expanding international markets such as China and India.

With content production and VFX gaining momentum in the digital age and notching up the storytelling quotient, India is on its way to entertain the world.

The lockdown has seen a spike in online video consumption especially on mobile networks. Not only social media companies like Instagram and Facebook, but even OTT platforms are witnessing high traffic that’s creating a strain on internet supplies all across. Hence, the digital Industry giants like Disney India, Netflix India, Facebook, Google, Amazon Prime Video and others conducted a virtual meeting to look for an unprecedented solution for an unprecedented situation.

The official release read, “The digital industry has decided to act immediately in the larger national and consumer interest and to ensure the robustness of the cellular network. It was unanimously agreed that as an exceptional measure, all companies will immediately adopt measures.”

Lately, COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) requested OTT platforms to reduce reolution and not overload internet services. It has also asked mobile users to consume data more responsibly and time their internet consumption during off-peak hours.

Efundu Comics making learning fun by turning syllabus into cartoons

Do you have a tough time to make younger ones around you learn their lessons? Or keep their interest alive throughout? Or is it difficult to keep them occupied at home while the entire world is quarantined at home due to Coronavirus pandemic?

Well, then I think I have help for you! Efundu Comics that transforms syllabus into cartoons and comics, is probably going to ease your load. This company has a few print publications that have already reached out to several kids through schools and NGOs. Also, they’re looking at creating motion comics and their app is presently under beta testing.

Kannada-English bilingual Storytelling class at Viveka School of Excellence near Mysore

Magadi Road school library period

Efundu mainly creates bilingual comics to make learning and understanding easy for Government schools in Karnataka. Their content for primary school is positioned as an NCF gap for state boards and interesting revision for private students. It has cleared a DSERT Karnataka review and is now a library resource approved by Samagra Shikshana Karnataka.

Efundu has reached out to over 2000 schools and their books have helped students in more ways than one. Presently, Efundu focuses on Value Education for classes one and two, and EVS for classes three, four and five.

Besides that, Efundu also creates comic strips for science topics which appeared in Times NIE last year. NGOs like Akshaya Patra, Akshara, Agastya, India Literacy Project, Art of Living, ACTS, Parikrma, Makkala Jagriti, Hippocampus have partnered with them. Their teacher partner is Meghshala Foundation, and Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) school, Viveka School of Excellence uses their content in their schools.

Vijay Srinivas Prativadi

AnimationXpress had a chat with Efundu founder and former Lintas creative director Vijay Srinivas Prativadi about this unique initiative. Here’s what he said :

1. How many books have you published as of now? Are these e-books/comics available on the app?

While doing the pilot we did one book as three versions – only English, bilingual English-Kannada and bilingual English-Hindi. After the first pilot of 10,000 copies were given out, we printed another 7000 of these.

We started as a social impact project around equal education for primary school with an objective to be Syllabus driven, stress free, self learning pedagogy.

While we waited for three years for government endorsement, we have done other books for NGOs in Careers for India Literacy Project and Constructivism for Agastya Foundation.

On our Efundu EVS books, the new print run should happen soon with the new versions as two more books are in production. We were told to break every book content into 12 storybooks instead of 1 storybook with 12 lessons to make commercial sense. But we are keeping it to the syllabus format as of now. This is the thin balance between educating and entertaining that we are trying to maintain.

Flip books are not yet available fully on app. But the e-versions of 6 stories are already there, along with assessment that the child can take after reading the story.

2. When do you plan to launch the app?

The beta version is already out. We have put six stories with assessment, apart from value education topics like body safety rules done with Enfold foundation, school safety rules  done with UNESCO and helmet safety rules done with Exide Life Insurance. We plan to add a career planner directory soon which will highlight careers that are open to the class 12 student to plan. We try to work with domain experts on our content.

3. Why did you decide to come up with Efundu? When was it found?

Efundu, or fun in edu (education), was first started as a social impact initiative to reach good quality content to an underprivileged child, either through an NGO or a govt school. We evolved it a little more when we approached the Government, as Efundu offered to fill the NCF gap for state board schools. After an initial pilot with 1000 schools with 6 stories in 2015, we have evolved it into a bilingual for government and topic based learning for private students with an intent to balance the content as books and apps.

We have also co-created a career planner book with India Literacy Project and on Constructivism for teachers with Agastya International Foundation. All our content and characters are our IP with a registered trademark.

After a four year test and state and national pilot to test cartoons in schools, we have now gone commercial in 2019 as HapiLipi Tech and we are developing content and tech.

4. Who creates the content for the comics out of school textbooks? Is it difficult to cram everything important within comical cartoons?

We have a team of writers, artists and tech people who create the comics in-house now. We also have consultants who partner us, from science concepts to illustrations to balance the workload. Once the storyboards are weighted by teachers, we create the final comic strips and design in-house. From a content point of view, we are able to cover up to 80 per cent of the points from the prescribed lesson, 20 per cent will be updated new content or developments that are useful to the students. For instance, the water lesson has been extended to cover a few points on rain water harvesting and recyclability of water through a visual idea. It helps the student and the teacher to start an engaging conversation. We believe that content points should lead to discussions around them so comics can act as a beautiful trigger.

5. How did you guys collaborate with NGOs, schools and Government schools?

The approach of comics to teach itself is beautiful so we have been welcomed where we show it. The only hitch is that everyone wants to know if it can really help in learning and score marks. Though we believe that igniting minds is the real score, providing assessments or testing helps all stakeholders feel more confident. That’s why we use both approaches of printed books and the app. NGOs take it for their classroom libraries that they run in the schools they are present, in Karnataka or in other parts of India. Private schools usually would like to have it in their libraries as they use varied content.

Science comic strip

The Karnataka Government carried out a DSERT review of our books and finally endorsed us as a library resource to fill the NCF gap in the state board. It will help us to roll Efundu out in thousands of schools across the state. Next step is to go national, once more books are ready.

We also have a new partner – Viveka School of Excellence that has introduced our book in its syllabus and all students are given the book by the school. This is part of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SWYM) at Sarguru, off Mysore.

6. Once you launch the app, what will be its model? Will put some comics behind the paywall?

Currently, we are populating the app though it’s android version is already available free for everyone. We have also put it on our website developed on python and we plan to add more Machine Learning to it to further the spirit of enquiry for the students. We hope to also add a paid model once all the content is set up. Some content will be free and some paid for. Especially the assessments will be made chargeable soon. It may also help schools to partner for quick anytime assessments, topic based.

7. How many pages generally do the comics have?

The English ones are around 28 pages while the bilingual ones at 52 pages. We can easily make it into more pages, but we try to limit the number of pages based on a concept board approach with around 20 boxes per lesson. The content is dense as every box can have a concept to talk about. We have minimised the fluidity of storytelling to keep the focus on content and not just its form. Though there have been requests to make every lesson into a book, we are looking into its viability, as we want the comics nature of entertainment to take learning forward. Once the format is loveable like comics, learning is bound to follow naturally.

From Left to Right : Gurunandan Jayaram, Shruthi Narayan, Rao Srinivas, Vijay Srinivas Prativadi – Efundu Team

Efundu Comics is doing heir bit in best way possible for them. Now it’s time for us to come forward and support this wonderful initiative and hard work of these magicians.

Here are major deals and announcements from gaming companies amid Covid-19

The global death toll due to the novel coronavirus has crossed the 21,000 mark and the number of confirmed cases worldwide soared past 450,000, reportedly. Almost all the countries are practicing social distancing, and not surprisingly amid all this, the gaming industry has witnessed a surge in the hours spent by the users as well as an increase in the number of new users.

Why there is a surge?
Coronavirus pandemic has upended daily life for all. As the global GDP is going down the gaming industry has apparently seen a surge. Here are the reasons why:

  • Firstly with the global lockdown, everybody is staying at home free and to avoid boredom they are playing games.
  • Secondly, people always wanted to have uninterrupted gaming sessions but due to lack of time, it was not possible earlier. But, since there is a lack of work apart from basics and a lot of free time people are binge playing games.
  • Thirdly gaming helps in diverting mind letting players completely pierce their attention and focus in the gaming zone, which is far away from usual happening which is frustrating and worrisome. Gaming is in itself a therapeutic process it is letting people relax so they are playing the game more than ever.
  • Fourthly kids are at home as schools and all other educational institutions are closed. Since kids love gaming more than anything therefore, under parental supervision kids are exploring and understanding the process of gaming education offered by biggies like Microsoft to continue the knowledge gaining process.
  • Fifthly with gaming many have joined communities/clans and might have gaming friends while at social distancing it is not possible to meet them in person, therefore interacting with them while playing games is the best way to play games and chill.
  • Sixthly if all the above reasons did not convince you then this will do- The World Health Organization recently issued a media briefing on dealing with COVID-19, with recommendations for actions individuals can take during the shutdown. Among other useful advice, the WHO says you should “play a game”.Earlier whoever thought that gaming is disorder as per WHO report now might have started playing games since now WHO said to play the game .

Today many people are spending hours playing games during lockdown periods irrespective of age, demographics, and gender. Literally the market is hungry for fresh gaming content more than ever.

Are their enough games to satisfy the users’ needs?

There are more than enough games in the world to satisfy the surge however more than a number of games what type of games users are enjoying is more important. Since mostly the choice of the game depends on the current trends and as per the current trend developers work on the projects to satisfy the hunger of the users. For example as the popularity of PUBG Mobile spiked and has even engaged non-gamers to hardcore games like Call of Duty also pushed the market for mobile players as well with the launch of Call of Duty Mobile. The lockdown period might not be favorable for indie developers however biggies are trying to utilise the time with new updates deals and announcements to engage the surging audience.

GOG is having a big spring sale with discounts on a lot of games until March 30, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and more. Steam has big discounts on a bunch of games from Avalanch Studios Group, including Rage 2, Just Cause 4, and more. Meanwhile, the Epic Games Store gives away free games every week and has a record of giving away some pretty fantastic titles, so it’s always worth checking out what’s available. Here are some of the major announcements and deals going on right now :

  • Google has revealed that Stadia Pro members will be able to get three more games for free next month. That includes top first-party Microsoft franchises like Forza, Gears of War, and Halo, including games and associated downloadable content (DLC).Unlike the vast PC library currently stocked by Green Man Gaming, its Xbox One offering spans just a subset of the full console offerings. The company has announced it’s “working to bring you even more Xbox games” moving forward, indicating this is the start of a larger partnership. For now, it includes several Play Anywhere-supported titles, enabling cross-purchasing and cross-saves on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched on Friday  and the timing could not have been better. brings a sense of normality, routine, and social connection  that’s sorely lacking for many in this moment. With the popularity of the Nintendo games like Animal Crossing, Katamari Reroll and other Nintendo games . Nintendo’s website, is selling refurbished models for $249.99, $50 off of list price. Which is still more expensive than a Switch Lite, but it’s a handy deal for such time.

We are accelerating work on a new Plague Inc. game mode which lets players save the world from a deadly disease outbreak,” an update from Ndemic Creations reads.
  • Microsoft and Mojang have released several free ‘Minecraft Education’ lessons in an effort to entertain and educate some of the many school kids who are currently missing classes due to coronavirus lockdowns. In a new blog post, head of Xbox Phil Spencer has outlined a new category that’s being added to the Minecraft Marketplace, bringing free educational content for young players to download and explore. These include a replica of the International Space Station, a robot-aided coding course, a tour of Washington D.C. landmarks, marine biology, greek history, and more.
