Ryan Reynolds may star in Netflix movie, ‘Dragon’s Lair’

The classic 1980s video game franchise, Dragon’s Lair, created by Rick Dyer and Don Bluth is getting a live-action treatment for Netflix and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Detective Pikachu) is in talks to produce and star in the picture.

The feature adaptation is being produced by Roy Lee — whose credits include the LEGO and IT movies as well as co-producer credits on all three How to Train Your Dragon installments — through his Vertigo Entertainment label, as well as Trevor Engelson of Underground, Bluth, Gary Goldman and Jon Pomeroy. Daniel and Kevin Hageman (The Croods 2) are writing the screenplay.

Dragon’s Lair debuted in 1983 and made a memorable cameo in the first episode of Netflix’s Stranger Things 2 in 2017. Previously, the game was adapted into an animated TV series. Fantasy writer Alan Dean Foster attempted to make a film back in the 80s’ but the project fizzled out.

Bluth, who has produced and directed countless animated films over the years including The Secret of NIMH, All Dogs Go To Heaven and An American Tail, partnered with long-time collaborator Gary Goldman on a Kickstarter for an animated Dragon’s Lair film back in 2015. The goal was to raise $250,000 to produce a teaser for the movie, but the Kickstarter didn’t raise the necessary funds. They moved the project to Indiegogo where it eventually earned twice that amount.

Now Netflix, after a year of negotiations, will produce and release the movie as live-action rather than animated.

Backstage Pass Institute of Gaming and Technology gives an insight to gaming education in India

Gaming has been a part of the entertainment ecosystem for quite sometime now around the globe. India too has recently picked up the pace and is poised to become one of the major hubs for the gaming industry in the world.

As more players across the globe open shops in India and the indigenous audiences’ acceptability and hunger increases for games the demand for talent across the sector.

We caught up with one of the known colleges from the country which provides courses in the game development sector.

Backstage Pass Institute of Gaming and Technology has been around for a decade now.

In the beginning, the parents did not believe that the industry even existed or had any future. Initial couple of years were very tough. We hardly had around 12 students in the first year in all the courses put together. After a couple of years, our students started getting jobs in top companies like EA games and some of them even won awards in the game design competition held by Microsoft and others. That’s when people started believing that this could be an interesting career to choose and may have a good potential. Only after that, we started seeing more students interested in joining our courses. Today, we have close to 350 students. We are expecting around 500 students in total by August / September 2020.” says founder Surya P.

The FICCI-EY report ‘The era of consumer A.R.T. – Acquisition Retention and Transaction,’ that was recently launched found that Media and Entertainment (M&E) sector reached $25.7 billion in 2019, a growth of about nine per cent over 2018 and the online gaming segment retained its position as the fastest growing segment on the back of transaction-based games mainly fantasy sports, increased in-app purchases and a 31 per cent  growth in the number of online gamers to reach around 365 million. This represents a 14x growth since 2010, when there were 25 million gamers. The online gaming segment grew 40 per cent in 2019 to reach Rs. 65 billion and is expected to reach Rs. 187 billion by 2022 at a CAGR of 43 per cent.

The gaming scene has come a long way and cemented its position as a standalone industry rather than being dependent on other aspects. Hence it might be better for students who want to get into game development to choose a college that offers explicitly gaming courses rather than colleges that offer it along with their other courses, where quality of mentors, education and concepts will be focused only on gaming.

We learnt that Backstage Pass offers a demo class wherein a potential student can take part in one of their usual classes to understand the kind of mentorship the institute provides. In the same way, taking a demo class and analysing whether the institute is laying emphasis on the fundamentals of the concepts can be critical for students as it would help them in the long run.

Just like the aforementioned institute provides, fee discounts and scholarships to students and low to zero interest loans can be a lucrative option for students when they are opting for an institute.

Finding the right job after finishing the course can be often perplexing for freshers in the industry. It is therefore of utmost importance for a student to check with the management and sources if the placement facilities are up to the mark.

Says Surya, “Our mentors help students build an impressive portfolio by guiding their work quality. Our placement officer is actively on the lookout for any internship or job opportunities from our associated game companies and sends in our students with relevant profiles whenever necessary.”

Concludes he, “Backstage Pass has always been student friendly and strives to provide a relaxed and nurturing environment for our students to enable a mutual exchange of ideas and learning amongst them. In our decade long journey, we have interacted and built a network with the top game companies in India due to which, we provide our students with excellent paid internships and job opportunities in such esteemed companies. We follow a mentorship approach which allows us to offer our students personalised supervision in their course of study by our experienced mentors.

We strongly believe in teaching the fundamentals to each concept, whether big or small, as that builds the students’ foundation of knowledge and enhances their skill set.”

Viacom18 announces a slew of measures to help India fight COVID-19

To fight the fast spreading Coronavirus, Viacom18, India’s one of the leading media and entertainment conglomerates, has announced a slew of measures to ensure that audiences remain entertained while being socially responsible.

Recognised for its socially conscious efforts, Viacom18 has extended its support to all daily-wage earners engaged with the production of all its original content across India. This move comes keeping in mind the unprecedented livelihood disruption caused across the country and especially in the media and entertainment sector, due to the lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Additionally, Viacom18 has partnered with GiveIndia to roll out a nationwide fundraising campaign to support daily wage earners across industries. Frontlined by contribution from its own employees, the company will be launching a social media campaign to encourage Indians to contribute, and will match the corpus collected.

Lately, in an attempt to make content easily available to its viewers across the country, Viacom18 made Colors Rishtey available as a Free-To-Air channel until further notice. The company will also now make select content available for public broadcaster Doordarshan’s patron viewers thus keeping them entertained with the very best of stories.

But, that’s not all, Viacom18 will also continue to amplify awareness and messaging around best practises during these times through its new public sector awareness campaign #RahoSafeGharPe. The campaign will stress on the need to stay home, wash hands frequently, and practise social distancing. The PSA will run on all Viacom18 network channels, its OTT platform VOOT and its social media channels.

Sudhanshu Vats

Speaking on the numerous efforts being made at an organisational level, Viacom18 Group CEO and managing director Sudhanshu Vats said, “Unprecedented times like these demand for measures that are special, generous and speedy. The COVID-19 outbreak has created tremendous disruption across the nation. Even during such times, constant efforts are being made to ensure that our viewers are being entertained while being educated about the situation. Despite the risks, a few of our employees have stayed back at our offices thus ensuring that viewers get their daily dose of entertainment. We have been ensuring they are safe and are following safety measures.  We have always believed that the onus rests upon us in giving back to society in times of need. We have extended support to all those daily wage workers that have been supporting us round the clock during production schedules. As a media company, we will continue to play a responsible role in echoing the larger message and extend support in all possible manners to help curtail the pandemic.”

Furthermore, supporting the Cellular Operators Association of India’s (COAI) massive efforts in ensuring that the existing bandwidth is not over-stretched, Viacom18’s over-the-top platform, VOOT, has temporarily reduced its HD and ultra-HD streaming to SD quality to prevent infrastructure overload. This effort is being made considering the potential impact on the cellular network infrastructure caused by the unpredictable surge in mobile network consumption as people are staying indoors.

Disney+ to launch in France on 7 April

Though the Coronavirus is continuing its grim journey across the world, people around the globe are trying to cope up with it. And Disney+, Disney’s streaming service has been no exception.

After its recent launch in seven European countries, Disney+ will be launching in France on 7 April. “Still a little patience for our French fans, our Disney + streaming service is coming soon … but at the request of @GouvernementFR , we have agreed to postpone the launch until Tuesday, April 7, 2020” – read Disney’s official statement.

This news comes after the European Union Commissioner asked streaming services to reduce the quality of video to help reduce demand on the internet, due to millions of people being home in isolation. Amazon, Netflix and YouTube have agreed to a temporary reduction of video quality to help the situation.

With the European launch of Disney+, the streaming platform will now be available in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. Disney+ will come with a comparatively lower bandwidth utilisation in view of the growing worries about the capability of some broadband infrastructure to manage the likely surge in consumer demand.

In 2019 November, Disney+ launched its service in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico. It provides a treasure-trove of more than 26 original movies and series, films, and television episodes and much more. The launch ensures that Disney+ will be accessible on almost all major mobile and connected TV devices, which include smart television, streaming media players and gaming consoles. Disney+ provides commercial-free viewing and unlimited downloads on up to 10 devices, in addition to customised recommendations. While subscribers may set up to seven different profiles, parents are at liberty to set Kids Profiles which feature child-friendly interface. It enables parents to restrict inappropriate content.

Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International chairman Kevin Mayer said that launching in seven markets simultaneously is a new milestone for Disney, “As the streaming home for Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic, Disney+ delivers high-quality, optimistic storytelling that fans expect from our brands, now available broadly, conveniently and permanently on Disney+. We humbly hope that this service can bring some much-needed moments of respite for families during these difficult times.”

Unlike other international markets, Disney already has its OTT presence in India through Hotstar which came under its umbrella after the 21st Century Fox acquisition. Former Disney CEO Bob Iger wanted to make use of Hotstar’s popularity in the country and launch the merged and re-branded service during IPL 2020. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the cricket tournament has been postponed and the entry of Disney+ got delayed in India. It launched in the country only to be withdrawn within 24 hours.

NBF seeks help from MIB to prevent vested interests to stop BARC ratings

News Broadcasting Federation (NBF) has urged union information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar for his urgent intervention, to prevent vested interests from stopping the publication of TV ratings by BARC.

Arnab Goswami

NBF president Arnab Goswami has written in a letter addressed to the minister that there have been attempts made by some vested interests to put pressure via the ministry to stop the publication of ratings measured by BARC India (Broadcast Audience Research Council) during this crisis period of COVID-19 lockdown, when the news channels in India are working tirelessly in this national effort against the virus.

Goswami wrote, “I am informed that some of these vested interests, who are trying to stop ratings in this period, are doing so to protect their commercial interests, and falsely claiming to represent the news broadcasting industry of India.”

He requested Javadekar not to allow any such decision or any such communication from MIB (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting) or anyone associated with the ministry to BARC. According to him, such a move is worrying news broadcasters and taking their attention away from the collective goal of defeating COVID-19, ensuring the lockdown is successful and the country comes through this together.

He also pointed out to the minister that if such a move is implemented, it will destroy the news broadcasting industry in India, which is doing an incredible job at this crucial juncture.

“You are aware that the efforts of the news channels have been appreciated by one and all, including the prime minister in his recent video conference with owners and editors of some news channels. In order to continue the effort, which in this period involves creation of informative and relevant news content while covering the entire country at a time when communication and transport is not easy, our hundreds of thousands of professionals are working round the clock, and taking this battle on the frontlines to ensure that COVID 19 is defeated. If news channels also face a situation when ratings are stopped, we will be destroyed and our organisations will be at peril,” Goswami added in the letter.

He reminded the minister that while individual channels or bodies may claim to speak for the news broadcasters, they are only defending their short-term interests. He also emphasised on the fact that news broadcasters are completely dependent on publication of TV ratings to run their business. “We are doing committed public service broadcasting in this period of national emergency,” he stated.

The letter has been copied to the relevant authorities at BARC for their information as well.

Classic comics make a comeback through social media to encourage social distancing

Indian government has imposed a long lockdown in wake of the coronavirus outbreak and social media has boomed. Sharing content through memes, illustrations, jokes, news is keeping us all connected. And now, the quarantined lot is going to get all nostalgic, as few old comics are making a comeback through e-books.

The good old comics of the 90s, including Chacha Chaudhary, Pinki, Nagraj, among others are out there on social media, being shared through Whatsapp. The relics are widely circulated and can be accessed for free to make the social distancing days fun.

Adventures of Chacha Chaudhary revolved around Chacha Chaudhary, a wise old man, whose brain works faster than a computer. He goes on adventurous expeditions with his friend Sabu to fight against corrupt government officials, tricksters, roadside bullies, and local thugs.

Chacha Chaudhary has been a favourite character for all age groups be it adults or kids. “This is the best time when the readers can indulge themselves into reading and relive the world of Chacha Chaudhary,” mentioned Diamond Toons director Manish Verma.

Pinki was a popular comic series in the 80s and 90s. It tells the story of a five-year-old girl and her mischiefs. The series was also launched by Diamond Comics in 1978.

Champak is a popular fortnightly magazine for children published by the Delhi Press Group since 1969 in India. One of my favourites, Champak consists of moral stories that revolve around wild animals and their day-to-day lives in the rich dense forest of Champak.

Nagraj from Raj Comics is about a fictional Indian superhero who goes on different quests and fights the villains.

While talking to a few readers, one mentioned how the comeback of comics have made the quarantine time easy and fun. Neelima who is 44 and a housewife said, “These comics have been getaway while we were young. Am glad they are back and now I can show my kids what fun we had reading them.”

Dinesh who is an artist himself was thrilled to find this old lost treasure. He expressed, “I am so happy to have these comics back. Reading them was pure bliss. You all kids should definitely read them. That was a golden era for comics.”

Diamond Toons have released 100 such comics through whatsapp forwards and readers can also read it online. “We are also working on audio versions of various comic stories and books in different genres like mythology, self help and more,” added Verma.

With such initiatives from comic publishers to make the quarantining easy, we as citizens should now carry out our responsibility to stay at home and support the medical facilities and government fight against the pandemic.
