Bengaluru GAFX 2019 set the benchmark for AVGC summits

AVGC industry has been hitting an inflection point with the rapid progress tracked over a short space of time in the last number of years. Making my way to the premises of Hotel the Lalit Ashok at Bengaluru, I wondered what that summit really entails. From what I was reliably told, GAFX 2019 is pegged as the leading conference that cuts across every note of AVGC scale and I was there to behold that symphony.

Bengaluru GAFX 2019

Touring the 3-day AVGC utopia

This year, the organisers had markedly ameliorated the process, making it easier to manoeuvre through the exhibitions, contests and sessions with a phone application. Threading through the main entrance, I was pleased by the pleasant reception. Volunteers in pink were evenly spread over the ground perimeters to help out the attendees get to their desired sessions or contests.

Refreshing monsoon winds swept over the green grounds where a posing model stood enwreathed by the budding artist sketching and sculpting on their canvases while a smattering of exhibition stalls buzzed with a cacophony of enthusiasts learning about new technology.

Experts under one umbrella

Tripling up as GAFX, the gaming, animation and VFX summit allowed me to witness an eclectic set of speakers from a variety of backgrounds ranging from production houses to visual effects companies and top animation studios from all over the world. Top visual effects artists from prominent studios like Firefly Studio, redchillies.vfx, MPC and Double Negative that I had only heard about just ordinarily walking across the street to get to their sessions was a striking spectacle. I kid you not! There were all there. Students flocking their idol Pete Draper again made me fathom the enormity of the VFX scene in India.

Well-curated and insightful sessions

Veterans like Sanath PC and Pete Draper (known for their VFX genius in movies like Bahubali and Magadheera) outlined the significance of visual effects in movies. It was gratifying to see them explaining to the attendees just how they managed to breathe life into the writer’s imagination. Walt Disney’s simulation supervisor Avneet Kaur dived fantastically into the dynamics of how the Disney team brought together all the Disney princesses into the CG world of Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Students watched their idols with a glimmer of reverence in their eyes as they even got the rare opportunity to speak to them in person. While (Oscar-winning VFX studio) Double Negative VFX supervisor Jaykar Arudra discussed how they created one of the most challenging and iconic images in the movie Venom, redchillies.vfx VFX supervisor Ronak Sanghadia conducted a session where he shared the intricacies of how they shrank Shah Rukh Khan in the movie Zero.

Pitching stories and stitching co-production deals

Branscome International head Catherine Branscome and Salt Content CEO Angela Salt shed light on the process of how intellectual properties are developed. Salt also advised budding storytellers and writers how they can grapple with shyness and pitch their concepts in effective ways.

Technicolor Animation and Games VP creative Owen Hurley kept the audiences transfixed by showcasing some of the top animation and games content. Topping off the sessions with MPC representatives showcasing the trailer of Lion king as the audiences screamed with anticipation. A panel centred on equality addressed the problem of the unequal representation of women in leadership positions and what sort of affirmative actions need to be taken to equalise the ratio.

Indian IPS have risen and how!

Cosmos Maya, DQ, Golden Robot, Green Gold are just some of the big names amongst many that have risen to produce animated content, making massive waves across the world filmscape. While Rajeev Chilaka from Green Gold spoke about the success of beloved character Chota Bheem (Kung Fu Dhamaka), Munjal Shroff from Graphiti studio made me feel equally proud about their Indian IPS like Krish Trish and BaltiBoy and YOM running rings around international counterparts on an OTT giant like Netflix.

It was an enriching experience.

Under the marquee of the gaming world, I saw Cindy Armstrong from Games Guru and Sashi Menon from Ubisoft creating a phantasmagoric environment, showcasing gaming content that has won all the hearts. Menon shared that the company recently expanded its footprints in the country by kickstarting operations in Mumbai.

ABAI is rising as the flagbearer of the AVGC scene

Not only bringing together the chieftains and experts from all over the world but also engaging them in constructive ways with expertly curated panels were some absolutely commendable feats achieved by the ABAI members. With hundreds of volunteers and backstage team ensuring the smooth running of the summit and performances at the end of the show, they captured the imagination of the attendees and left them in anticipation of the next edition.

Competitions ranging from story writing to 3D modelling, 3D game art, hackathon, character animation, clay sculpting, digital painting, all were being held in the premises. All one needed were a few clicks on the phone to know which part of the GAFX map they are going on. The delighted students and professionals waited in anticipation to hear out the winners’ names. I still can’t get over the fact that this event allowed me to rub shoulders with some of the most prominent and prodigious folks from the world. And of course, the talented students that just couldn’t get enough of it.

Government of Karnataka pushes the envelope

Karnataka has been consistent in allocating huge chunks of funds to promote the AVGX sector, making the state the frontrunner of the AVGC advancements. It was absolutely reaffirming to hear of the scholarship, internship and grants policies that are being launched in favour of the students. The educational initiatives and start-up funds have really been instrumental in bringing about a revolution in the regional cinema. Evidence of which is what I saw in the ultimate and electrifying panel discussion on Kannada cinema.

Through and Through. Bengaluru GAFX summit was a terrific event that I wish to want to keep attending every year. Or as they say, I am completely chuffed to bits.

Agora enables game developers to embed live video chat as a Unity Technologies verified solutions partner

Agora the leading voice, video and live interactive streaming platform, announced it is a Unity Technologies Verified Solutions Partner and released the Agora Video Chat SDK for Unity. As a Unity verified solutions partner, Agora enables game developers to easily embed high-quality video chat directly inside their games.

Mobile experiences are becoming increasingly interactive as users turn to live video to communicate and engage with each other across a wide variety of apps, with gaming at the forefront of this evolution. The Agora Video Chat SDK for Unity provides game developers with everything they need to create richer, more engaging user experiences with live in-game video chat.

By enabling players to interact with each other in real time, developers can boost player engagement and retention while delivering unique gaming experiences that today’s gamers crave. In-app video communications add an interactive social layer to games so players don’t have to rely on third-party apps, which increases user stickiness and keeps gamers inside the game.

“Live video is a powerful tool for game developers who want to take their games to new heights but most existing solutions come with a trade-off in gameplay. Agora’s new video SDK is designed to work seamlessly with our development platform and makes it incredibly easy for developers to deploy live interactive video within their games. More importantly, Agora’s SDK is a robust yet lightweight solution, allowing developers to add real-time video without compromising the player experience,” said  Unity Technologies CMO Clive Downie.

The Agora Video Chat SDK for Unity delivers in-game real-time video communications with sub-second latency and a small footprint that ensures a seamless experience for gamers. The SDK is optimized in size, CPU usage, and power consumption for minimal impact on gameplay without affecting gaming bitrate or diluting the experience.

In addition to high-quality video, Agora’s SDK also ensures high-quality voice integration with zero interference and low latency with passive echo cancellation, background noise reduction, volume normalization, and proprietary anti-data loss algorithms. Other features include spatial voice effects, which add a sense of player positioning and depth, and voice changing, which utilizes pitch, reverb, equalizer, and other sound effects to provide players with personalised experiences.

“By working with Unity, we’re making real-time video easily accessible for Unity’s massive game developer community to power the next generation of engagement-centric mobile games. Both Unity and Agora share a similar vision of powering the real-time generation, so we’re thrilled to become a trusted partner to drive the future of gaming together,” said Agora COO and CRO Reggie Yativ.

Bengaluru GAFX 2019 calls curtains, leaving students and attendees in anticipation of the next edition

GAFX 2019 packed a mix of well-curated and effective sessions by distinguished professionals and chieftains of AVGC sector. While Makuta co-founder and VFX veteran Pete Draper illustrated the importance of visual effects in today’s world with an enlightening session, it also served as an extension of his previous address.

Bengaluru GAFX 2019

Grand Ballroom played host to a much-needed panel on the need for gender equality in creative arts. Payal Dani from Mill Film, Anugraha Pearly from Sun Network, Priya Krisnan from IMAX and Anika Negi from Technicolor Games graced the panel with elaborate inputs and insights about the progress women have made over the years.

The session was followed by Firefly Studio owner and VFX veteran Sanath PC who spoke extensively about how VFX technicians were not even mentioned in credits to the current times where they have come to become an integral part of pre-production, the shooting process and Post-production.

With thunderous applause and adulation, attendees of the session intently listened as Sanath delineated the operations of VFX team as to how they bring about magic and the various applications of visual effects in cinema with a step-by-step and elucidated presentation.

Sanath PC

Redchillies.vfx VFX supervisor Ronak Sanghadia conducted a session where he shared the intricacies of how they shrank Shah Rukh Khan in the movie Zero.

Expanding upon the breakdown as to the techniques employed to depict the dwarfism, Sanghadia shared, “Having been in the industry for over 25 years, everyone recognizes SRK’s mannerism and behaviour. Thus, we decided to shoot every scene with SRK though, we had a body double, strictly for reference. We had 1600 artists working on this movie, 600 being only from our studio.  To ensure this isn’t the case, we shot five plates for each shot. That was a big challenge so in a day, we could only shoot six-seven shots. The character as per the director had to look cute, which was the main challenge for post-production. Keeping the demeanour and characteristic and yet, shrinking SRK’ character proportionately.

Redchillies VFX Showcase

(Oscar-winning VFX studio) Double Negative VFX supervisor Jaykar Arudra discussed how they created one of the most challenging and iconic images in the movie Venom. Sharing insights about the process, he expounded, “We were told that we have to be ready to use a lot of goo effects. Released in October 2018, Venom had a count of approximately 1000 shots to be delivered between London, Montreal, Vancouver and Mumbai along with Chennai. So when the film came to us, the first question was how to work around with the look of Venom, Venom as a character is inspired by a Gorilla. India itself was responsible for delivering approximately 200 shots. It has to look very human and organic. Expressions had to be animated with the help of the link between mouth, teeth and eyes. So the anatomy of a human being had to be incorporated to make it more relatable and emotive.”

In acknowledgement of the leaps and strides made by the Kannada cinema, GAFX day three saw a session dedicated to the veterans of the industry ranging from film producers to cinematographers.

Moderated by co-chair of Bengaluru GAFX 2019 and ABAI secretary B.S Srinivas, the panellists included Mr.Rockline Venkatesh (Film Producer & Actor), Mr.Rajendra Singh Babu (Filmmaker & Producer), Mr. Udayaravi Hegde (Unifi Media, Managing Director), Mr. GnanaMurthy .N(Sugnan) (Cinematographer)

As a part of Bengaluru GAFX 2019, Asia’s largest event on animation, VFX and Games, the exclusive panel session was titled: Changing Landscape of Sandalwood – A Technology Perspective. This session threw light on the journey of Kannada Films from a technology perspective from the standpoint of a leading producer, director, choreographer & visual effects supervisor. The first look poster of the first ever 100 crores VFX loaded Kannada film Gandugali Madakari Nayaka produced by Rockline Venkatesh and directed by Rajendra Singh Babu was shown to the audience present and was discussed.

Kannada Film Industry Panel

The elated audience left the hall for a short break only to return to witness the most anticipated part. Time had come to acknowledge the talent present in Bengaluru. Before the award ceremony could take place, the audience was treated to a spectacular line-up of a diverse set of dance performances that engaged the audience. Runners up and finalists were featured on the screen as the host unveiled a grand plethora of artwork from the budding artists. And now, it was time to award the best!

Closing Ceremony

ABAI president Biren Ghose commenced the valedictory award function saying, “ABAI is delighted to present a varied number of opportunities to students, professionals and any small and large industry,”

With an enthralling rendition of a Beatles’ song stylised in summation of the event, ABAI president  Biren Ghose had the audience spellbound with his music. In a heartening address, Ghose announced a lifetime achievement award to the Animation veteran Ram Mohan who could not be present at the GAFX conference owing to health issues.

ABAI team

Competitions varied from story writing to 3D modelling, 3D game art, hackathon, character animation, clay sculpting, digital painting to name a few. The delighted students and professionals waited in anticipation to hear out the winners’ names. Srinivas talked about the newly undertaken DAC (Digital Art College) program which has several colleges as partners.

As we spoke to some students about the Bengaluru GAFX 2019, they exalted in unison saying, “We can’t wait for the next edition.” Recognising the artistry and hard work that went into the success of the three-day event, ABAI vice president Ganesh Papanna extended his great gratitude to all and GAFX closed its curtains for 2019, poised to be even grander in 2020!

Day two packs a savoury mix of VFX, gaming and animation presentations

Bengaluru GAFX 2019

While day one had set the tone for what’s going to follow over the course of the GAFX weekend, the second day at Bengaluru Gafx 2019 saw a melange of electrifying presentations advanced by professionals hailing from some of the most reputed and pedigreed names in the media and entertainment space. Alternating between two session halls in order to attend the sessions suited to their sphere of interest, enthusiasts and students soaked in as much knowledge as possible.

Branscome International head Catherine Branscome and Salt Content CEO Angela Salt shed light on the process of how intellectual properties are developed. Technicolor Animation and Games VP creative Owen Hurley kept the audiences gripped by showcasing of some of the top animation and games content. It was followed by an interesting session by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Simulation Supervisor Hollywood CA Avneet Kaur giving a detailed account of how their team put together the pipeline to bring classic 2D Disney princesses to modern CG life in the movie Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Disney Simulation Supervisor Avneet Kaur

“Legendary animator Mark Henn whom I had the pleasure of working with was the original supervising animator on five of the Disney princesses like Ariel, Bell, Jasmine, Tiara and Mulan. Nobody knows these princesses better than Mark. So, he worked with 80 plus animators in Ralph breaks the Internet to constantly guide them on the performances of these girls. He would often hand-draw and provide 2D references and be always present in the animation dailies to mentor and review the work,” she explained.

Showcasing India – The Journey, Session

In the session titled Showcasing India – The Journey which was moderated by Indiantelevision.com Group founder and CEO Anil Wanvari saw a healthy and enlightening exchange of information, covering a gamut of topics ranging from the way studios can be sustained to the dynamics of how IPs are built and monetised in today’s day and age.  Graphiti Multimedia director and COO Munjal Shroff spoke about how they went from a few-minter ‘genie’ in Khulja Sim Sim to episodics like Jadoo and now two hit shows and Netflix titled YOM and Krish Trish and Baltiboy. Redchillies.vfx VFX supervisor Ronak Sanghadia talked about his journey of creating VFX imagery on movies like Krish and Zero while 88 Pictures founder Milind Shinde showcased the work they have done and how they set up the studio. Manoj Mishra ran us through the animated shows that they have worked on over the years and how DQ Entertainment has come a long way since their inception.

Technicolor

Ubisoft production director followed up the session by turning the cart in the direction of gaming. He initiated his session by explaining how gaming has been the sphere to adapt to the newest technologies before they enter the mainstream. Following up his agenda, he explained how Ubisoft India had humble beginnings and how it went on to grow into an integral part of the company’s multi-branched ecosystem. He also shared that the company recently expanded its footprints in the country by kickstarting operations in Mumbai and also collaborating with IIT Mumbai to conduct more research on AI and ML, which are likely to be implemented in their games sometime in the future. With his session coming to an end, the students present in the hall flocked him to know more about the opportunities that a career in gaming provides and how to go about it in India, to which he gladly obliged and guided.

Having blazed a trail of awe-inspiring sessions about animation and gaming, the theme of the event steered into VFX after lunch with crowd thunderously cheering at the VFX breakdown of the superhit movie KGF Chapter 1 by Unifi Media MD Udayaravi Hegde and VFX supervisor Praveen Damodaran.

The Making of Seven worlds of Sir Ridley Scott

The awestruck students were in there for a treat with another session on VFX by MPC Advertising 3D Supervisor NY Santosh Gunasheelan on The Making of Sir Ridley Scott’s Seven Worlds. “The client was Hennesey and Sir Ridley Scott hadn’t done advertising in fifteen years. So every time you have Hennesey, you go through these 7 phases of face notes we had to create the visual storytelling in a way that you could explore each one of the phases chronologically,” he shared.

Prasad Sutar from NYVFX WALA presented how his team created the imagery in movie Total Dhamaal while Makuta Visual Effects co-founder & division head Pete Draper outlined the importance of planning every shot well in advance for a hassle-free VFX process in the post-production.

The second day saw a tremendous outpouring of the crowd. The area was dotted with students and professionals waiting to leverage their talent in the ongoing painting and sculpture making workshops at every place. Day two made for an even more spectacular and insightful experience for the audience. Stay tuned for day three
