A look at Barbie’s association with AVGC as she turns 60

When I was a child my favourite birthday gift used to be a Barbie doll. When I looked at her for the first time I felt mesmerised by her beauty and from then on, she has become my role model. In no time, I resolved to emulate her attributes as a beautiful and stunning woman, living in a fancy pink world. The obsession was so deep that I would even decorate my room with Barbie hues and frills. Well, what do you expect from a three-year-old little girl? When I grew up and faced the world, the scenario was different, but the affection for her remains unaltered.
Have you ever wondered why Barbie is popular and has still maintained her style icon position even in her late fifties?

The first Barbie doll appeared wearing black and white zebra-striped swimsuit and signature topknot ponytail. The question arises as to what beauty elixir she has taken that she never ages even after 60 years of age. The conjecture around beauty secret goes on and on. What remains, is her popularity and her huge fandom even in 2019.

Looking back in history, Barbie appeared as a fashion doll in 1959 and later she went on to explore a variety of fields. The style icon Barbie was first manufactured by the American toy company Mattel and businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration. Ruth Handler first got the idea for Barbie when she observed her daughter playing with paper dolls. She set out to create a 3D version, and in 1959, the first Barbie was created (and named after Handler’s daughter, Barbara).

For many decades she has been a role model for girls around the world. She has always had a significant impact on social values by conveying characteristics of female independence, and with her multitude of accessories, an idealised upscale lifestyle that can be shared with affluent friends.

With this idea, Mattel has sold over a billion Barbie dolls, and it was the most successful most profitable line of the brand. The doll transformed the toy business which includes merchandise (accessories, clothes, friends of Barbie, and so on ) animated movies, games and so on you name it has explored it all. Considering AVGC industry here are a few Barbie explorations:
The journey of Barbie animated movies started with the mixing of favorite fairytale with the Barbie franchise and Barbie’s later explorations which includes The Nutcracker (2001), Rapunzel (2002), Swan Lake (2003), The Princess and the Pauper (2004), Fairytopia (2005), The Magic of Pegasus (2005), Mermaidia (2006), The Barbie Diaries (2006), The 12 Dancing Princesses (2006), The Island Princess (2007), Mariposa (2008), The Diamond Castle (2008) Thumbelina (2009), The Three Musketeers (2009), A Mermaid Tale (2010), A Fashion Fairytale (2010), A Fairy Secret (2011), Princess Charm School (2011), A Mermaid Tale 2 (2012), The Princess & the Popstar (2012), The Secret Door (2014), Star Light Adventure (2016), Dolphin Magic (2017). Her TV series like Life in the Dreamhouse (2012–2015), Dreamtopia (2016–2018), Dreamhouse Adventures (2018–present) were also quite popular.

Other animated shorts and specials include The Rockers: Out of This World, (1987) The Sensations: Rockin’ Back to Earth (1987), Toy Story 2 (1999), My Scene: Jammin’ in Jamaica (2004), My Scene Goes Hollywood: The Movie (2005), Toy Story 3 (2010), Hawaiian Vacation (2011), Toy Story 4 (2019).

Barbie has explored the gaming sector as well, from mobile games to PC games it has explored all. Few of the popular ones are- Barbie, Game Girl Magic Fairy Tales: Barbie as Rapunzel, Super Model, Vacation Adventure, Fashion Designer, Storymaker, Nail Designer, Riding Club, Race & Ride Super Sports, Beach Vacation, Magic Genie Adventure, Explorer, Horse Adventures, Fashion Show: An Eye for Style, Secret Agent Barbie, Detective Barbie and so on.

Barbie also appeared in more than 240 issues of comic vines. She has had many different appearances and occupations throughout history. The outreach of her business and her brand integration in the AVGC industry has held the sway and pillars throughout his journey.  This year  Barbie is turning 60 on 9 March, we are looking forward to what she will bring in her kitty as the celebration of her birthday! Happy birthday Barbie from all of us.

‘Game of Thrones Season 8’ Trailer: What we understand so far

Its been about a year we last saw Game of Thrones, the final season is right around the corner. We got to glimpse through the release of the first trailer for GOT season eight and we dissected the trailer to make sense of the scenes and understand the possibilities that we might witness in the final season. The trailer opens with a frightened Arya Stark zigzagging through the dark tunnel, running from something that seems to be doggedly chasing her. The scene carries a terrifying overture with the growing uncertainty about her fate.

“I know death,” says Arya, while flourishing the dragon glass. “He has many faces. I look forward to meeting this one.” As we have seen earlier, Arya’s been in the company of those who worship death; it will be interesting to see her go tête-à-tête with the actual dead nightwalkers.

These troops look like the Golden Company, a band of Essosi mercenaries known for never breaking a contract. In the books, the Golden Company has a long lineage born out of the Blackfyre Rebellion, a Targaryen civil war that took place about 100 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Two men who were guarding the wall had seemingly been swallowed by fire from the possessed dragon, Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion. Turns out they escaped, I guess, and here they are standing with the torches in the Winterfell crypts.

It’s Cersei, giving a wry expression at the fact that all the other characters have to deal with the White Walkers, while she hatches her plans in the parallel territory.

Sansa looks with awe at Daneaeres’ children. Learning to cope with the fire-breathing creatures that can’t be expected to abide by the moral rules of Winterfell

An army needs new dragonglass weapons that can be used to defeat white walkers, and it just so happens we’ve got a character who trained as a blacksmith his whole life. Here’s Gendry gearing up to make his presence felt.

Brienne of Tarth fighting a bunch of nightwalkers around plumes of fire.

Jaime Lannister has joined the other team, has he? To see him fighting illustrates a one-of-a-kind character arc.

A loss of pregnancy could be implied by the wine sips but if one would remember the win glass sips with that mirthless smile are always followed by some catastrophe that she helped trigger.

In the season seven episode “Eastwatch”, Drogon let Jon Snow pet him. Whereas Drogon might otherwise burn someone who tried to a crisp. Drogon may have done this just because Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen.

Jon Snow’s first dragon ride would be quite a spectacle. And this scene is probably indicative of what fans might get to watch in the episode.

The trailer closes with some long and wide shots of supporting characters that were assumed to be dead.  Here are Brienne and Pod still standing strong!

Game of Thrones returns for its eighth and final season on 14 April 2019

Few Indian VFX studios who ensure that work can be fun!

We live in the world of merciless competition where almost everyone is on the run. Even taking some moment out of the busy day is most of the times difficult, leave alone for recreation or pursuing their hobbies. Lately, few posts has been doing the rounds across several social media platforms that Indians work for the maximum hours in the world. While we spend most of the time of our day working, the working environment or the work culture is quite important; as it defines whether our work place becomes our second home or a burden.

The Indian VFX industry has only grown with giant strides in the recent years mostly with huge chunks of outsourced work. The professionals have a tough time maintaining that pace as the artists work under strict deadlines and deliver huge amounts of work. In this scenario the better the working environment, the better is the production output. So, we at Animation Xpress take a tour of few well known VFX studios in India and talk to people concerned on how they keep the working environment healthy, jolly and equally productive.

BOT VFX :

Headquartered in the U.S. with a wholly-owned production operation in Chennai, bot vfx is a visual effects outsourcing services company catering to clients in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. The company offers foundational digital visual effects services and has worked on projects like Black Panther, A Wrinkle in Time, Captain America : Civil War, Wonder Woman and many more.

Founded by Hitesh Shah, Sreyans Bardia, and Deepak Bohra, bot vfx has an environment to envy for, in their studio which reflects in the quality of work they produce. Bardia mentioned, “Freedom and Responsibility are the two words we’d like to describe our culture with. What artists really enjoy about BOT, is the company’s belief in their ability.

(from left to right) Sreyans Bardia, Hitesh Shah and Deepak Bohra

Over the years we have grown from being a studio which predominantly had a lot of freshers to now having a mix of talent from outside which gives us another perspective; to have a synergy which means “take the best of both worlds”. This has immensely benefited all of us at BOT. Our culture has always been that of sharing knowledge with each other, helping each other grow and more importantly of being considerate and compassionate through eachothers ups and downs. The personal rapport and connect even amongst the artists is pretty high through many years of hard work put in by the founding team.”

The company also believes that the employer-employee relationship is extremely critical as they together create a successful team by taking care of each other’s growth as their priority, it’s a win-win scenario always.

Bardia noted, “We coined this term called ‘More2LifeAtBOT’ and we really do a lot more than just work. For us the holistic growth of an artist is extremely important. We have a “BOT-TLE Club” where recreational activities are thought of, planned and executed by our artists themselves. From Social causes to Cyclothon, to crazy outdoor trips to foodie club events, ‘goti-soda’ day, table tennis tournament and many more, we have done it all. BOTs always ‘Do the Undone’.”

We understand that positive work culture encourages Happier Employees and we believe in creating one.”

With 140 artists, the company has grown over the years with people who have been with the company for a long period of time which has created a good bond through interactions with each other and having each other’s back all the time. The company has obtained a quite transparent, accessible and a expressive work culture in our company. The team members can reach the management easily at any given point of time. They also give importance to the employer-employee relationship that assures better productivity. Besides that, we have gatherings, we all go for film screenings, lunch parties, birthday celebrations and many more.”

Makuta VFX :

Perhaps known for the creating world class VFX in Baahubali, Makuta VFX has already gained a position of repute. They try to keep a balance between being lenient and strict regarding timings.

Pete Draper

Makuta VFX chief technical director and division head Pete Draper told ANX, “We help people communicate neatly and inform to relevant departments if there’s any delay. We know that the teams work hard especially during crunch time so we’re very flexible when it comes to timing. We encourage development and communication between departments as that makes or breaks a creative space. There’s a lot of sharing of information between artists, both senior and junior, with everyone having an input. Naturally, creative leads will drive development and shots creatively but we encourage artists to question decisions. This can lead to some lengthy debates but it’s part of the development process of not only the shot but the team working on it.”

The company gives equal emphasis to the employee and employer relationship and are always approachable about anything, even personal matters or health issues. They’re open and frank to the artists about their daily lives inside or outside the studio. Transparency to them, is the key so that the artists know that they are integral part of the development of not only their individual team but the overall success and growth of the studio.

Draper also informed, “We encourage creative development, working on their own material outside studio hours such as their own short films, photography, fine arts which is going to develop them further as artists. Within our own studio there’s several activities we’ll do each year such as Secret Santa, Treasure Hunts which are little crazy team-building exercises and challenges which are also fun and make people think laterally.”

Kids’ channel Sony YAY! now present in seven languages after adding Marathi language feed

Sony YAY! began their journey with a promise to become a one stop destination of happiness for kids and they have stood true to their promise – be it through their home-grown, all desi content, relatable characters, or all their other endeavours.

Now, giving kids from Maharashtra yet another reason to rejoice and a chance to be able to enjoy their on-screen best friends in their native language, the channel has introduced a Marathi feed too. With this launch, Sony YAY! will now be available in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, English, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam – making it the first kids’ TV channel in India to be available in seven languages and the only national kids’ TV channel to have a Marathi, Bangla and Malayalam feed.

“We are delighted to announce the launch of our Marathi feed. Considering we are the only 100% original desi content TV channel for kids, our aim is to provide our content in every local language preferred by kids. In Maharashtra, a very high kid’s viewership comes from various Marathi TV channels that spans across regional GEC, regional movies, regional music and others. It’s only natural that there’s also a huge appetite in kids to consume the content exclusively meant for them in their native language. Our Marathi feed launch is only a step to fill in the gap. It will also give kids a chance to engage with YAY toons in their local language,” commented Sony Pictures Networks India kids genre business head Leena Lele Dutta.

The channel plans to strengthen its position in the kids’ genre by offering content in viewers’ preferred languages, thus, guaranteeing a worthwhile experience in every possible way and intensifying their reach in regional markets. All the programmes and their airing schedule will remain identical across all language feeds.

This summer, Sony YAY! is all braced up to give kids an unlimited YAY! time by adding a newest language feed along with an exciting content line up.
